Language / The Future of Polish Language [179]

I must say, your written English posted thus far, seems quite good

C'mon! It's better than "quite good" Lyzko.

AJ writes pretty much like a native English speaker most of the time - and an articulate one at that.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

just because its said doesnt mean its true.....

Of course it isn't true - it's just a pleasantry.

Not to be taken any more literally than miło mi or something.

("Oh my god... NO!...you mean to tell me that in reality, they may NOT actually be really pleased to meet me?! Oh that's so terrible")

I think many Poles read far too much into things like this and what they call the fake smiling etc. It's nothing, just a greeting, an exchange. It doesn't mean the person likes you, wishes you well, or is particularly friendly etc etc

By the same token, non-Poles probably read too much into the non-smiling. Doesn't necessarily mean Poles are miserable, hostile or suspicious.

Genealogy / Is tallness common among Polish people? [201]

This one doesn't seem likely either though.

The average Irishman is taller than the average Lithuanian or Russian?

Nah, can't be right.

AJ, your English looks impressive

Believe me, it is excellent.

You are no slouch either though - Torq too.

Plenty of others I should praise I'm sure...

Language / Easiest Language To Learn from English to Polish... [13]

Indeed, Cubans say somthing like 'Como eta uted?' (no s's)

This is simply a socioeconomic thing rather than a geographical difference or dialect.

Many Spaniards in mainland Spain don't pronounce S sounds either.

And yes, from the examples above, Spanish is by far the easiest in my opinion.

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

You Europeans just cant understand what it is to be an American

The laugh is, you probably don't either.

Go on - explain it, what does it "mean to be American" as opposed to being any other nationality?

The Dutch misspeak English just like any other foreign group

Of course, but in general my experience is that a Dutch speaker who speaks "good English" will usually have a better vocabulary & pronunciation/accent than most other Europeans - except for maybe the Swedish.

The concept of a "perfect tense" is totally strange for Polish learners, it's quite hard to get them to use it, and even more advanced learners will constantly tend to "miss out" on the Present Perfect Tense

Good point and when you consider that English speaking children are competent with this from a fairly young age it puts things into perspective.

the sensible lead of the Irish and abandon their language in favor of English

Wasn't exactly a fully conscious decision, nor our choice!

But yes, either way it would have eventually made sense anyway.

Life / Driving test, English speaking driving school in Warsaw? [95]

I would like a list of the places !

Sorry mate, couldn't be bothered but this extract should suffice:

...since at present almost everything in Ireland is translated to Polish already. In fact - Poles in Ireland don't have to speak English at all, because all information is available in Polish. Majority of Poles in Ireland mentally is still in Poland, they are in Ireland only 8 hours a day at work.

The only place I have seen these imaginary Polish signs in The UK is in the pages of the Daily Mail

Why are you talking such obvious rubbish?!

Polish language info/signs/posters are everywhere in the UK & Ireland.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

Hope they didn't drive afterward.

Well I know for a fact the Irish guys didn't but it was the Poles I was worried about!

No news is good news so I guess everything turned out OK and that the arguments as to who was driving were all settled amicably : )

" Pity party"

I don't even get this BTW ?!

'you coont'

I assume you spent most of your Irish period in Dublin Torq? : )

Where do you find the finesse of Anglo-Saxon, though?

Difficult to tell for sure but I get the impression that with English, there is a stronger tradition of the love of the language for the language's sake - like in poetry or in well crafted prose - even a journalistic piece.

English speakers really appreciate a nice "turn of phrase". So much English language poetry is centred on beautiful evocative contructions, mellifluousness, as opposed to e.g. clever content or insights.

Love / What do Polish guys think of Irish girls? [187]

True but Ireland is part of Britain

No it bloody isn't! What are you talking about?

Britain = England, Scotland, Wales

UK = England, Scotland, Wales & Nothern Ireland

Ireland = Ireland, republic of.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

Yep. I agree Sean.

Out of any nationality that I have had reasonable experience of: e.g. French, Spanish, English, American, Dutch - there has been less of a need to "explain" certain cultural references/implications/innuendos/human foibles etc with Poles, despite an occasional language barrier.

Just spent the evening with 7 Poles + 3 Irish. Great night.

This must be one of the best kept secrets of Poland ?

Not at all! Observational, wry, self-deprecating - once you get to know them. I like it.

Similar to my sense of humour so could be merely narcissism rather than genuine appreciation?

I dunno. Maybe it's a question for the behavioural psychologists : )

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

Is Jerry offensive? We use it all the time towards Germans

To me, Jerry is almost exclusively middle class English. Not really offensive.

But I would see Polack as being on the same level as jap, paki, nigger spic etc
