I wonder what these Germany-haters would say when Germany goes all Nazi again and starts to treat the muslim immigrants like the Jews back then...

Would they applaud for Germany becoming Nazi again? Even as they usually use the Nazi past to beat us with it? Will their brains explode?

The main vote winner party of the Bundestagswahl has the right to appoint the new chancellor, which is usually the party leader...so people know whom they would get before.

Thilo Sarazzin for Chancellor?!

Since he is an active SPD member that is doubtful. It is generally doubtful that the SPD will provide a chancellor any time soon. They are sinking fast...

There are other ways to appear nice and good and still make them leave or not come.

We are going there...maybe soon with Merkel gone we are going there abit quicker...

But even then, the world wide image of a friendly Germany...so "un-Nazi"...will linger on and will help us getting lotsa points on the next popularity poll. Again, for a country depending on international trade that PR is priceless!

The US napalm bombed Vietnam, men, women and the kids.

Germany is not the US! Germany usually get's invaded and occupied because of to much mowing down of unarmed civilians...

The US is it's own continent...we have a gazillion neighbours, we can't do the same politics as the US! It's called realpolitik.

No matter what some populists say...the images of Mutti Merkel and crowds of welcoming people embracing the hapless poor of this world was best PR for "Made in Germany".

How could you forget? Germany had it's "Make Germany Great Again" time already...and it developed into a nightmare for all involved.

I am not posturing. I mean it.

I believe you.

But when countries mow down women and children they are generally frowned upon and have to face consequences.

Not to mention that a world trader like Germany lives off his good image to sell his goods...mowing down helpless people is just bad for it.

Some are already missing her, even as she is not gone yet...

Poland: relief for constancy in the Chancellery

Poland, like France, recognized Merkel's decision and announced cooperation until the end of her mandate. Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland Jacek Czaputowicz He welcomed the announcement of Merkel on Monday in Warsaw, which would remain Chancellor in 2021, even after having renounced the presidency of the CDU. "The most important thing for us is the declaration that Merkel will remain Chancellor until the end of his term," said Czaputowicz.

Warsaw recognizes the "important role" of Merkel in the reform of the European Union, as well as its "important place in the history of the European Union in recent years", said the minister of the Polish right-wing government. On Friday, Merkel will travel with several Cabinet members for German-Polish intergovernmental consultations in the Polish capital.

The left liberal newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza writes: "The twilight of his political career is bad news for Poland." In Germany, no politically educated politicians have ruled in recent history. "

Only thing is, who will steer the ship of state with any of her practical experience?

My bet is on Friedrich Merz...the german press just dubbed him the "Anti-Merkel".

A longstanding enemy of her's since she nearly destroyed him alot of years back...he is seen as a "real" conservative who could steer the CDU back to it's old roots with the chance to re-collect alot of miffed now-AfD voters.

At the beginning in December the party members will have to decide...between Merkel's crown princess AKK which would mean a "keep at it" or a course correction with Merz (there are alot of other candidates still too...but...well....)

PS: Right now it's about her CDU leadership only, not her being chancellor...but should Merz be elected as new CDU leader the experts don't expect she will stay there for much longer.

She is "Mutti"...incredibly fine tuned to her electorate. After Fukushima the mood in the german populace was to nearly 100% against nuclear power (besides a few experts and the workers in these plants that is).

A mood the Green party of course mightily profited, after all they were the warner for decades now. So as it was Merkel's now famous/infamous MO she grabbed the initiative and stole the Greens the topic and made it her own. That guaranteed her again lotsa approval and votes and left her political opponents empty handed standing in the rain...again.

Again, 2015 was totally against her usual MO, the one and only time...and it broke her neck. (But it must be said that there was alot of support to let the people from the autobahns in at first...it was the never ending stream in consequence to that which proved to be so destructive)

*nods*

Consensus and powerful federal states...makes decision-finding slow and cumbersome but guarantees stability! Nothing happens quick and overnight in Germany...

Well.. 2015 being the one big exception as Merkel used her "Kanzler Vorrecht", without asking the parliament or her neighbours. But then the refugees were already stranded on the Autobahns...not much time for long wired decision-finding.

Today the consensus in Germany is mainly that this was the only human decision...it was after all only about 3000 people, the big error was that she didn't communicate clearly that this was a one time decision only.

But millions in the third world did take that as invitation, and that's where the bruhaha started. In the end over 1 million people stormed Germany, totally overwhelming the country and the people.

Nah, I like Andrew Hammel's take

...do you have a link for me?

...she's a caretaker who lasted so long by never saying anything interesting or pushing any interesting policy

Thing is the only time she broke with this rule was 2015, and this was her downfall...

That's the curse powerful countries have to live with, I'm afraid.

Agreed...

Inviting and coddling them compared to jailing and killing them.

I would say that is a mighty fine try for a rectification.

Germany can't do it right, can't it....killing minorities is frowned upon by the neighbours...coddling them too...*sighs dramatically and shakes head*

basically her wedge of cash is bigger than their d*cks.

Maybe that's the reason they agreed to talk at least....

Never underestimate the power of Germany.

But it's a soft power...very soft...quite squishy....

I wonder, does Germany have to be the peace-broker?

I just don't think we are very good at it...there is pragmatic Merkel between two violent alpha males who measure their d*ick size on the scale of their armies.

And she has to counter that with what? Her brain? Her empathy for the killed people? Her wish to stop that bloodshed? What use is that? They don't care anyhow...

An ongoing marshall plan aka EU funds....

ec.europa.eu/energy/en/funding-and-contracts

...Cohesion Fund

The EU's €63.4 billion Cohesion Fund aims to reduce economic and social disparity between EU countries and promote sustainable development.

I very much doubt any EU hater has an alternative to that ongoing financial help for developing new members. Even as they speak of their own, new possible unions (3 Seas or Visegrad or whatever) never is there a chapter about real help as such even mentioned.

Biggest mistake that the EU ever made was to let too many poor countries in too quickly.

They had a dream...it was naive, yes but you can't really fault them for having such a dream of a peaceful, unified Europe after the catastrophe of WWII and the decades long split in two ideological hostile blocs with the main battle line across the continent.

Why didn't they sell those cars in some sh**holes where the drinking water is dirtier than the American sewers?

World wide it's about 11 million cars...including Australia, India, China, Argentine, Brazil...I doubt they left a continent off....okay...no data about Africa...

I'm not sure that is a thing about Qualität...they lied and duped and deceived to avoid the clima laws! It was a conscious decision by the top managers, not an accidental mechanical flaw.

The german car industry has only one chance to rescue themselves in my opinion, they should work hard to define the new generation of new green tech automobiles. They need to become the leaders in that regard again, not holding onto the old smokers. Flying cars, self-driving cars, green energy cars...the whole program. They depended on the past successes and models for to long.

Maybe this current disaster was the awakening they needed....

what about what? read the links you posted - ec.europa.ec, what do you expect the truth?

Okay....then what about that?

British taxpayers risk losing up to £100 million in the European Union's biggest funding scandal after Polish road-building projects worth over £770m were discovered to be caught up in a price fixing racket.

telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/9840084/British-taxpayers-set-to-lose-100m-after-record-Poland-EU-funding-scandal.html

For you acceptable proof because for this fraud scandal to take place it needed EU road building funds in Poland in the first place?

European Commission officials have moved to immediately suspend additional Polish funding worth £3 billion for road infrastructure in order "to protect the EU budget and EU taxpayers from a case of suspected fraud".

...The scandal is a disaster for Poland, which was has received over £50 billion in EU regional funds over the last seven years while, until now, avoiding the whiff fraud and corruption that has often surrounded the spending of Brussels cash in southern Europe.

The investigation is now focused on three specific road and highway construction projects worth 900 million euros (£773m), a new funding scandal record for the EU.

Maybe just maybe your gov looked the other way for reasons of their own and only when the S hit a fan, they play this three wise monkey game.

Yeah, they did...and boy came that back to bite them in the ass.

The Eurozone should never had put in politicians hands who believed Greece NEEDED to be part of it because of their historic importance as "birthplace" of Europe and such.

Economists would never allowed Greece in, they wouldn't had fallen for that book cooking...

The Eurozone still is sick because of that!

Road infrastructure in Poland: the EU invests €320 million

ec.europa.eu/regional_policy/en/newsroom/news/2018/09/09-06-2018-road-infrastructure-in-poland-the-eu-invests-eur320-million

...Over €255 million from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is invested in the construction of a highway section between the cities of Nowe Marzy, Świecie and Bydgoszcz, in Centre-North Poland, along the S5 expressway.

Further €64.6 million from the Cohesion Fund go to the construction of an expressway section between the Zakręt and Lubelska junctions of the S17 express road from Warsaw to Garwolin....

Or that?

Instead of stability it's dragged those countries into eternal recession (how much growth has Italy had since it joined the Euro?)

The Eurozone is half baked, true....but it's only a currency, a tool for the economy. It doesn't make or break an economy! You can't blame a currency for a failed state, nor is it the guarantee that an economy will be flourishing.

Countries like Greece had been basket cases before the Euro already.

The birth fault was IMHO that it was used by politicians to further their european project, disregarding hard economocial facts. Economists should have build the Eurozone instead. They let countries in which were just not compatible!

The Eurozone needs reforms, and this time by expert Economists not by politicians...and if that needs a downsizing then that's what it needs.
