USA, Canada / American...Polish Resident...Returning to the land of milk and honey [103]

I guess Oklahoma marches to the beat of a different drum.

Yea, we're not a bunch of pretentious folks worried about how we dress. I'm quite happy with a pair of jeans that fit, and a shirt. Don't know what you wear up your way, but I hope it makes you feel good about yourselves :) Honestly, if you've got some tips on "good" clothing that will enhance my life, by all means, fill me in.

Aviation gas

Exactly :)

Car gas prices are cheap as dirt, but I'll be on the bike the entire time anyway, so it doesn't really matter if it's $2 or $5...

When are you going to say 'home, sweet home"? Or, is my old country your home now and your old country mine?

yup, we've traded out for the time being. Honestly, I've lived more of my life in Europe at this point than the states....

lol Oklahoma? Not warm enough.

It's warm enough, trust me. Freezes at night, rolled up my sleeves today while working on the bike. There is a pond just out back that doesn't have the slightest trace of ice on it...

But here, I don't even have central heat in my house!

Heh, sounds like Poland. Dear god woman, I think WroclawBoy mentioned something about -17 earlier. Do you think you could do a Polish winter?

Life / Polish-American Polka Music in Poland [60]

So hopefully we now have a fairly broad definition of what constitutes a polka.

Apparently everything that you can dance to. one one two one one two one one two....

When did Polka make its way to Ireland? Is dance of the mirlitons Polka?

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=C0MuG6Ca16o

Filipino polka?

youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Q6IRoSCb-94

Billy Boy Polka?

This Polish group calls this a polka.

That is indeed a Polka.

With regards to the other videos, why couldn't you dance anything else that uses 2/4 or 4/4 time? Do the Irish dance Polka?

Yup, polka is played in a particular time, which I'm not a big fan of, reminds me of oompa bands in beer halls. I am however a fan of, lets call it, traditional Polish music :)

maybe you're just in the wrong company.

Neither of those are Polkas. They are folk, and like I've posted, There are a lot of great Polish folk groups that deserve much more attention than their getting.

Does your definition of "Polka" also encompass other styles?

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

Yeah, as you say, better to let them die ;) American healthcare system, its a privilege not a must ;)

Interestingly enough with all the gun violence, lack of healthcare, and terrible diet, lack of exercise, Americans still live just as long as Europeans...

History / Effects of Living under Communism in Poland [58]

It was your job, so why say 'thank you'? And, if you as a man did not do that, others will be happy to remind you your duty. :)

By the same token, should you be reminded of your place when you get out of line, or a bit uppity? I mean, like back in the day? Of course not, we've evolved a bit past that. From everything that I've heard, people have become more recluse and drawn in after the borders opened up, not less. The younger generation, of course, but the older generation sees a complete break down in morals and values (the old recurring theme I suppose).

so how is it going in OK?

Landed, drank, slept, woke up, bought clothes, shot milk jugs, drank, ate brisket, drank some more, slept, conference call with the old continent, slept, now I'm cleaning the carbs off an old beat up virago 920...I should be mobile in a couple of hours :) Going flying tomorrow, life is good.

I always like how talkative everyone is. Standing in line, mutual complaining...heh, yesterday I stopped off at a little bait shop/gas station (love that noise that the minnow tanks make), walked back to get a drink and I heard some lady scream out "I'm gonna beat your ass when I get home", turn around and look over at the register and point to myself, the lady was on the phone and shook her head. "You don't hit your brother, you understand?"...ah, parenting across the copper wires. I went up to the counter, and she proceeded to explain to me that her boys liked to throw down while she was at work, there is no way in hell you'd hear an exchange like that back in Poland, and they definitely wouldn't explain it to you. Otherwise, she was nice enough though :)

Ah yea, good times.

I just finished shoveling my driveway so SHUT UP!!

Some people pay for gym memberships, you get that upper body workout for free. Sounds like a win-win. If it makes you feel any better, it's freezing cold here too, we just never get white stuff. For bonus points, the wind has been steady blowing at about 40mph. Yea, an Oklahoma Christmas.

Why not? It's been kind to me for years. Walking through those sliding doors and being asked if I need a buggy is like being pressed face first into America's warm bosom. In that warm embrace I find everything that I need, tooth brushes made in Taiwan, socks from Guatemala, jeans from Mexico, a shirt from Bangladesh, underwear from India, and a power adapter made in China... I noticed that quite a few of my fellow internationalists/shoppers were practicing their foreign language skills, who says Americans aren't a worldly, erudite, cultural folk?

Got some milk that was proudly made in the USA too.

Read Polonius's posts about repeating it enough times for people to begin liking it.

Like I said, some great folk bands out there not playing ummpa music :)

Dude, you should get all liquored up and go flying and shoot guns from your airplane! That would be cool! :D

Done that as a passenger in a trike :)

Did you know that all private planes must get re-registered with the FAA? Yep. May as well take care of that while you're here.

Actually that's a good point. Mine is still good for another year. Just a bit of added bureaucracy. The FAA is saying that it is a way to clear out the registry of outdated registry information...Tax records aren't enough?

Anyway, made it in last night around 9ish. The security really makes you feel at home. Screenings, more screenings, even more screenings. Immigration was a breeze, normally they hassle me a bit more, but this time our conversation revolved around Oktoberfest. As usual, it was nice just talking to random people, which, like I've pointed out a couple of times, is something that I miss from the states. Customs folks were confused as to why I didn't have any baggage asking a couple of times if I was sure I didn't have any baggage? Maybe I forgot it on the conveyor belt?

Any who, now it's time to head into town to Walmart and buy the classy $100 wardrobe. Still have a cache of socks and underwear from last time. Then it's off to an afternoon of slinging brass...and a brisket that's already being prepped for the smoker. Life is tough.

Stay away,,,Mr. Benedict

Drats, let me know a bit earlier next time.

Ah, home...

If you're going to try to forcefully indoctrinate people, why not do it with the folk groups that already exist in Poland. Lots of talented groups, wouldn't have tom import foreign music. I like Polish folk music a lot, I dislike polka past the novelty of a couple of songs. It just turns in ker-thunk music...hey, like ska!

Law / The Stock Exchange - Poland (GPW ... or WSE). Do you invest? [34]

18% in the UK.

About 20% CGT is normal in Europe.

If you want to trade with an EU company, Bulgaria is 10% with 10% CIT as well.
If that's not a prerequisite, just offshore with one of the usual suspects

Emerging markets ETF to spread the love a bit?

Especially if you don't have the time to do your research.

hey! there is one lagguage limit and we have to pay for the second, am i correct?

Dunno :) A while back you could take two bags up to 20kg.

That's normally the case. Unless you travel with United (Lufthansa) which are Star Alliance and American Eagle (OneWorld & Star Alliance) flies you domestically. AE which is AA's regional carrier has an agreement with United Airlines and flies some of their routes (the regional jets have United paint scheme though). Confused yet? ;)

Not at all. Lot is Star Alliance, that's why it was strange. But they verified that they have a baggage agreement, even though Lot and AA are in different alliances. It would have to clear customs in Chicago.

Let me know if they have trouble scanning your passport.

Heh, they didn't have problems in September. Shouldn't be an issue now :)

USA, Canada / Canada Increasingly a Gateway for Undocumented Polish Immigrants Entering the U.S. [150]

now you're talking like a typical, full of hatred toward Americans, PF member.

Nope, just don't like worthless lazy people, regardless of if they're Americans or some other nationality. Those people can starve to death for all I care, hopefully the idiots didn't decide to breed. And yes, the situation is the same everywhere. Those people that don't better themselves get eaten up. In fact, I've gone back and forth with WB on this over hundreds of posts. When I pointed out that quite a few people in Oklahoma are working hard on minimum wage jobs, you countered that in your area people don't have fiscal problems, and attempted to show that as a one off. Has the poverty bug spread? Are illegals stealing all the good white collar jobs? I will reiterate that point. If someone that walked through the desert for 5 days, is filthy from head to toe, has a 4th grade education, can't speak a lick of English, and is in the country illegally, if that person steals your job, you have failed in the game of life.

dude where you at? having fun?

Still in Wroclaw, heading out tomorrow morning on the 530 flight to Warsaw, then on home to see the family. Rams is coming up for a couple of weeks at the start of January. I'll bring over some goodies from the states and we can do the -20 bbq/leaving party :)

News / An end to Drug Prohibition in Poland and EU states? [9]

Then I suggest you come here once and ask for "nederhasj" ;)

Speaking of which, about a month ago I met a friend in Amsterdam for the weekend. Rusland is, and will always be home away from home. They do an ice hash made from their White Russian which is amazing. It's a bit expensive, but good god. Great for the trip home :)

If you've had your entire life to work in the land of milk and honey, and you lose your job, can't find another one, and don't have a fat nest egg to sit on, you're a failure. Surely after 20-30 years of work experience if a Mexican that can hardly speak English can take your job, you are a complete and utter failure, those people shouldn't be breeding either.

USA, Canada / REFUSED A HOLIDAY VISA TO THE U.S CAUSE IM POLISH [323]

If you want to start a business, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand. If you want a strong social net (not worry about education, health care, etc), the Nordic countries. If you want to earn a decent salary, Switzerland, Germany, Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar, Norway...

Why is the hypothetical migrant moving?
