Law / Jobs and Economic Status in Poland [64]

Except that money is not going to be given back to the real owners, It will be stolen from 1 thief by another.

No, it will go straight in the pockets of people that never contributed to their pension fund in a hard currency.

The OFE funds were an interesting experiment at the time, but the general move away from them in Europe tells you all you need to know - they don't work.

Anyone with half a brain in Poland can see that the real thieves were the generation that's now 40-60 years old and who benefited from some incredibly huge social subsidies at the time. It's an utter joke that there are people out there who were able to buy their flat for peanuts while taking early retirement from a profession that didn't really require it. I could introduce you to some teachers who did very well for themselves by simply playing the system to their advantage.

News / General strike 11th September in Poland? [26]

Don't forget the discussions of cooperation with the SLD. This act is yet another act of cooperation with the SLD, which should be seen in the correct light.

Law / Jobs and Economic Status in Poland [64]

stealing OFE money

It's the OFE funds themselves that have been doing the stealing. When you consider how much debt the country runs up just to pay the OFE funds, it really makes no sense at all. Hungary (the poster child for PiS) did exactly that, too.

Even the articles you are coming up with clearly state that "the only economy to avoid recession" was due to massive public spendings and If you had any clue on the issue, you would know that it works pretty much the way like getting drunk, It's fun but after that comes the hangover, It's just started

The difference is that Poland has a sensible constitutional limit on debt - so spending a bit wasn't a big deal if it meant avoiding the problems. Of course, what's funny is that you're criticising the Government for spending money, yet you in other posts think that the Government should be subsidising others. Make your mind up, eh?

That's why I reckon that the Polish economy is doing just fine.

It certainly is. Investors are coming back to Poland, and they're also encouraged by the fact that the Prime Minister and President don't have a habit of making the country look like idiots.

Law / Opening "Budke Gastronomiczna" [37]

Other people have done it (maybe not beside main roads, but on streets

This is probably the crucial thing - most of these stands are not on main roads. The second picture looks to be in an area that was built for the stand - so you'd have to build an access road (could be done quite cheaply if you can get permission) for it.

Why not open up one in the city first? There's one in my part of the city that does very well for itself late at night.

Life / Immigration in Poland and being surrounded by a monoculture? [134]

It's much easier to do that, however.

I read one story (probably not true, but anyway) about how they stocked a lake with fish on one reservation. The locals simply got a boat, fished everything out and were left with nothing - they had no interest in living a "traditional" way of life when they could make easy money.

Law / Opening "Budke Gastronomiczna" [37]

If that won't work, then I'll use my savings which I've put aside for investment.

It's probably a better idea rather than waiting for any potential EU funding to come online.

Cross that bridge when I get to it. I don't think anyone can plan what sanepid will say, but I'd have to try to cover what I can. Normally these "budki gastronomiczne" can come with a sanepid certificate.

The certificate itself won't mean much - your business still has to keep Sanepid happy. My advice in this respect would be - before you do anything else, you have to understand what Sanepid is looking for and how you can keep them happy. They are the real make or break guys for a food business.

Cameras. I've installed a many.

There are rules surrounding the usage of cameras in Poland in public areas - have you familiarised yourself with them?

Not familiar with BHP, so its something I'd have to get a grasp of.

This is the question - how can you ensure the safety of a solitary worker on site?

I just can't see the GDDKiA agreeing to what you've done there. You need to find an area that you can rent that is clearly off-road, without causing an obstruction to the main road, that has enough space for parking and so on. Such a place isn't going to come cheap, because anyone owning such a place will know of its potential to be used for such a thing.

I'd have my doubts as to whether Sanepid would be satisfied with a (to use the Polish word) toi-toi if food is involved.

In the closest town, a 15m2 space near the old town costs 500zl. So assuming on a road between 2 towns (in amongst villages), it will be significantly cheaper than 500zl. Just need to borrow 10 x 5m from a farmer and I cant work from there.

What about the GDDKiA? They will get involved if your place causes any disturbance to the main road - and you also have the issue of needing to comply with planning laws.

I've got that covered. Got someone on the inside, who say's that I could get a grant for whatever I want. She would make sure of it.

She says it, but it's rare that such funds are handed out (as I said, most funds are for people who invest their own money) - and the numbers applying as such that she might not be able to help. Don't forget that these things are rarely decided by one person.

It's worth pointing out that there won't be any new funds until next year - and that it's quite rare for funding to be handed out for start ups. I can give several examples - my boss attracted quite a bit of funding to run courses. But we already had the building, equipment and so on. That's normally how the EU cash works.

I won't deny that the administrative paperwork will probably overwhelm me.

For a start :

Sanepid will be interested - you need to make sure that they're happy. Have you thought about how you're going to keep them quiet?

Security - how will you ensure that the site is secure, as well as providing adequate parking facilities?
BHP - what about the safety of people on your site?

My biggest question would be to ask how you're going to deal with the GDDKiA and Sanepid.

Real Estate / Buying a flat in Krakow; prices are still falling? [200]

No. Banks in the EU are subject to regulation, this isn't the wild west. There is no way a Polish bank would demand anyone 17x the net average wage to approve a loan for flat in Krakow. Unless you have a criminal record in which case they could flat out refuse you a loan. You get that kind of demands from a loan shark, not a EU based bank.

It's not unrealistic - Polish banks are under a hell of a lot of supervision when it comes to lending (hence why Poland has little to no exposure to Greece/etc) - and such a ridiculous offer might be made to ensure that they get their money. I have a friend who works as a mortgage broker, and he told me that it's quite common practice for banks to make ridiculous offers rather than to simply refuse - one such example was asking for a margin of 10% on a 2m PLN mortgage.

It's worth pointing out that the law has recently changed to all but ban lending in foreign currencies unless the income is also in the foreign currency. Perhaps they were asking for such a ridiculous offer to discourage him?

This is great. Delph VS Grzeg. Both saying contradictory things. Who's correct?

Greg wants to see disaster and doom and gloom in line with his political ideology.

On the other hand, I see it for what it is - a small downturn in a country that is still considerably richer than most.

Law / Opening "Budke Gastronomiczna" [37]

I certainly wouldn't invest more than I have, but would make use of a EU grant for funding and trial this idea for 1 year.

It's highly unlikely that you'll get EU funding anytime soon as mostly everything has been spent from this budget cycle - and EU funds that don't require you to invest your own money tend to be aimed at priority groups - which you probably aren't. I've got a bit of knowledge in this field - and I can tell you that most funding opportunities require you to invest up to 75% of your own money.

Ryz, about the funding, I look at it like this: All I need is about 40-60 thousand zl to buy one of those "gastronomicznych przyczep/kontenerow". I don't care for other stuff. If the business goes upside down within 12 months then the fundee has to repay the dotation, so given the "IF" I'd rather borrow as little as possible. Oh if my idea materializes then I'll gladly give you a free kebab on the house.

Like I said above, it's highly unlikely that you'll get funding to open a kebab shop. EU money - when it's available like you say - tends to attract a hell of a lot of applications and it's virtually impossible to get if you aren't one of the priority groups. It's also worth pointing out that they normally ask for a considerable amount of documentation proving that you can do what you want to do - that means sworn translations of all your diplomas/etc.

Here is my breakdown:

What about your rent? You're not going to manage to rent a place at the side of the road for 1500zl...

Law / Polish licence question: theory and driving test? Cost and lenght of the process? [13]

Yes. I've been discussing the theory exam the whole time.

As I said, how many walks did you take before the exam? How many times did you sit in a car and observe signs and situations? The new test is designed to test your ability to react to the real world - in other words, applying the knowledge learnt in the theory course.

The best practice for the theory test is to learn the materials that you were given - properly - and then go out and see how the rules apply in real life. The theory test is (mostly) testing situational knowledge - which means that a sound knowledge of the rules and signs will help you considerably.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

I am absolutely convinced that a Ziobro-led PiS could abandon the anti-Communist 4th Republic ranting and form a viable coalition with the SLD. It may not last more than one term, but such an agreement would benefit both parties and would show that the SLD has moved on for good.

I could see a situation emerging whereby they win roughly 55% of the vote between them - Kaczynski would be thrown out of the party after he fails to deliver a coalition, Ziobro steps up and offers government to the party in exchange for obedience. The SLD demand (and get) the interior ministry as the price of coalition, Ziobro abandons the rhetoric that PiS became known for (as well as throwing out a few of the nutters) and a centre-left trade unionist Government holds power for 4 years.

Kaczynski would go off and form a fringe RM/TV Trwam party, but he would soon become an irrelevance.

Stick to facts FREE CITY OF GDANSK

Well, if you want to stick to facts, the fact that the territory was 95% ethnically German, was considered German, used German as its official language and had only 5% Poles (most of whom were Kashubian) suggests that it was very much a German state.

Even the English name - "Free City of Danzig" suggests that you're very much wrong.

Gdansk had polish garrison, polish mail etc.. It was neither german or polish both.. Stick to the facts.

It was as German as it got - even the official name suggests that it was German. It was a German state, just not part of Germany.

Nothing new in German constitutional theory at the time - Germany had only united most German lands in 1870, so the idea of a separate German province was nothing special. Likewise post WW2, when there were three separate German countries at one point.

The Polish garrison that you talk about was the matter of protests by the Frei Stadt, for a start. And a post office doesn't mean much - there are Swiss telephone boxes on German territory for instance.

Travel / Rihanna complains about lack of privacy on Polish beach [150]

To be honest, it is a disaster - if anyone from the record company saw the total lack of reaction from the public, they could be tempted to drop them for the "Next Big Thing".

More importantly, what was she doing anywhere near that polluted mess that is the Baltic?

Gdansk wasnt german.. It just shows ur levels of ignorance, it was a free city.

It was far more German than Lwów was Polish.

Harry, remind us - wasn't the Frei Stadt Danzig something like 95% German?

Work / Living in Lublin (as a teacher)!? [36]

I will come there with an EU project, called Comenius and I will be working in a government school. My money is totally net and guaranteed by EU. I will have permit for 11 months. :) and I will work only 12 hours/week.

Do it! :)

Government school jobs are more than easy and if you can commute from Lublin, you'll have a fine time.

Work / Living in Lublin (as a teacher)!? [36]

That isn't a lot of money then - less than the going rate.

To be fair, if the school is giving him that net, as well as sorting out the visa before he travels and getting the residence/work permits sorted...it's not that terrible.

I'd be more concerned that the offer seems suspicious - why offer such a guaranteed deal to a non-native?

Work / Living in Lublin (as a teacher)!? [36]

I think it's actually quite a good deal, especially as there'll be a work permit and visa thrown in.

My only question - what's the travelling from Lublin to Chelm like? Is it bus or train?

Quite a few Turkish businesses there too, including a grocery

Mind telling them to open up in Poznan?

I've been trying to convince my favourite Kurdish kebab shop owner to open a shop, but he won't :(

History / 70th Anniversary of Sikorskis Death (Newark) [30]

Most people who are not fantasists would prefer to keep Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk Sczceciń.

Indeed, especially today.

The cost of reintegrating Western Ukraine would be...eyewatering. Bringing the GDR up to even almost-Western levels cost a ridiculous amount of money, and that was in a society that was pretty industralised.

Nobody really notices, do they?

I saw a black guy on the train (a crappy local train, at that) full of old people coming back from the seaside the other week. No-one even batted an eyelid.
