Work / Are you teaching English in Poland? [120]

There is one thing that I'll say, GodandBrown. That is that some boring teachers can get off with lacking personality if they can guide the students through the material in a fluid way. It all depends on the method. Some methods require more punch and zip.

I sometimes feel that a more humdrum attitude is called for when I teach. Some Polish students can be very serious and they don't seem to react well to an open environment laced with humour and energy.

It just depends. I adapt when I can but I am who I am.

News / Komorowski for complex-ridden Poles? [94]

Poland needs sb real, sb who at least has a sense of the Polish national interest. IMHO, Tusk doesn't. Komorowski sums up some of the nothingness here. What has he said regarding the Polish interest? What's his pre-election spiel?

I was drinking with my neighbour for the first time on Friday night. I could see the complexes come out one-by-one and I'd heard it all before (the victim one was the biggest). The Poles are really curious to know what others think about their country to confirm or dispel their misgivings about themselves. I played football today and stormed off the pitch due to their lack of heart. Some young here just lack passion, like their souls have been crushed. I didn't want to have to shout too much at them, I just let it go and formed a bad opinion of them. I discussed it afterwards with the older ones, my friends. They agreed that the young may be the achilles heel in some ways. They can't wait to get their quals and jump ship. To me, if you can be yourself, money takes a backseat.

I prefer to hang out with Poles with charisma and heart. They fit far more with my Scottish ways. If there was ever a Scot that didn't play with heart in football when I was there, I would fire them up. The defeatist attitude of some Poles really gets me down as I know they can be different!!

Work / Are you teaching English in Poland? [120]

Yeah, you have to set dates as deadlines.

True, don't be late and be accurate to the grosz.

It doesn't make a difference. I work for 3 schools plus other side projects and I give it all to my accountant.

Travel / Poland from a Persian Tourist's Perspective [269]

Well, he has his ways. He is not the fairest of men within his own domain but I like what he says in interviews. He is sly like Putin but the West can't really pick him up on his words. He is against weapons but the West makes him out to be some sort of demon.

I agree, it has a different meaning in English. It is associated with negativity.

USA, Canada / Why do Americans (and Canadians) hate Polish people? [226]

True, frd. Foreigners should write 'my friend, who happens to be Polish, ......). There are some discernible traits but there is no reason to hate. I don't imagine that Northern Americans think about Poles too much. If they do, the comments I've seen have been highly complimentary.

Work / Moving to Poland from the USA. Question concerning CELTA certificate.I need help [32]

That's true! It's long behind me now but more important is the range of methods that you teach afterwards. CELTA was too rigid in its approach. I appreciate methodology but only to a certain point. I'm not here to go into great depth on any one topic but to glide through different tasks.

I do feel that 950 quid plus living costs was a little steep but what's done is done. It was a great experience and I loved living in a nice part of Edinburgh. If you see it in those terms then it can be a worthwhile investment.

Jesteś Polak(iem) means that you are Polish. It's all about the connotation and the intention, plk123. Sam słowo Polak jest ok. It is seen as offensive but racist?? What is the Polish race?

Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

I don't really care who makes me a Mod or doesn't. I help new users of the forum as an experienced user, regardless of title. Besides, I do what I feel I should and let others try and come back at me if they want. Sorry, the only badge I wear is at work.

Is Polak offensive? If thrown in a certain way, yes.

News / Flood situation worsens in southern Poland [119]

Yeah, I heard about that, frd. Generally, Gliwice is ok but the Polytechnic took the brunt of the flooding. My wife set off for work early as there will be traffic jams early morning.

History / Casimir the Great (Kazimierz Wielki) started anti-Semitism? [101]

Ever read the Bible, Pol3? You should, I think KW would pale into insignificance then. One valid point is that, when you hand across power and then let that group accrue more, it's very difficult to claw it back and redress the balance without consternation.

History / Casimir the Great (Kazimierz Wielki) started anti-Semitism? [101]

It is a telling sign when there are a whole plethora of threads devoted to anti-Semitism but the thread where I asked about what is in the Polish interest was virtually ignored. He granted rights to Jews as a Pole. This is part of Poland's nobility past.
