News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

Yep. I mean, if they had wanted the Polish constitution to make it impossible for same-sex couples to get married, they would have need to have written something along the lines of "Marriage, being exclusively a union of a man and a woman,

And of course they didn't. Looks like the current trickle of lawsuits will become a flood.

It just ain't gonna happen in my life time so let's close this thread once and for all

Never say never - and individual lifetimes, no matter whose, are not the basis for human rights legislation within the EU. Already the framework exists in Poland to respect civil rights - there is protection already for all citizens, residents and travellers.

giving gays preferential treatment

What 'preferential treatment' are you imagining?

Life / Questions about living in Wroclaw, Poland [11]

jakdojade.pl is for your public transport needs.

I find it's OK to look at as long as you're cynical about the advice it gives, especially in a city. It sometimes suggests some pretty weird connections.

Work / What is deducted from a salary in Poland apart from Income tax? [155]

DreamIsland

1. Depends on living costs etc in India.
2. Sounds quite a decent salary for someone so young - it's slightly above the median for Warsaw.
3. You'll take home just under 5000l wynagrodzenia.pl/kalkulator_oblicz.php
4. Apartment, 2000zl, Other expenses inc. food, 2000zl.

UK, Ireland / Pack from Ireland to Poland via An Post [16]

I've done that too.

Very tempting to mail something that looks like a credit card when x-rayed to a non-existent person with a foreign name and some very, very nasty bacteria in the envelope...

There is a law against violating the dignity of Christians and other believers. Violating people's religious sentiment is a punishable offence in Poland.
Art. 196. Obraza uczuć religijnych

That doesn't have anything to do with this thread. In any case, people can pretend that almost anything violates their 'religious sentiment' if they so choose. Having one's 'religious sentiments' uncriticised and unchallenged is not a human right. Living without arrest or persecution or without receiving different treatment or access to public services or particular professions if one is LGBT (or anything else) however is...

he is utterly obsessed with gay sex.

Looks that way.

Life / Bollywood in Poland [32]

Kino Luna sometimes has them (though not all the time) as does the University and this site might be useful for you:

Work / Have a job in America ($100K a year) - should I move back to Poland? [9]

$100,000

Remember that when Americans talk about how much they 'make', they usually quote the gross amount including any bonuses and before any deductions. In Poland, it's more usual to quote the amount after everything is taken off. Worth remembering that they don't all get the 5 or 6 weeks paid holiday, maternity leave (never mind paternity leave) isn't statutory and they can very easily be fired. Also, the Trade Unions are weak there, and their healthcare is usually connected to their jobs.

You might consider early retirement to Poland once you have enough savings to comfortably live off.

This is good advice.

News / Poland's Space Programme ;) [6]

Poland already has a space programme - it's part of the European Space Agency.

Poland has other priorities. Most Poles survive on peanuts, millions have to earn their bread abroad

Exactly. The same problem with India spending millions on a space programme for vanity's sake.

Nevertheless, this initiative is a small one, is more about universities achieving excellence and should be encouraged. It isn't a space programme, and Poland does not need its own.

UK, Ireland / Pack from Ireland to Poland via An Post [16]

An Post and Royal Mail are different organisations, however they do work very closely together. It doesn't affect the price as far as I know (though Royal Mail are not cheap nowadays for parcels). I don't remember the name of the courier they use in Poland but I have noticed that the service is quicker and better. For letters, I think they still use Poczta Polska (and there are still thefts, if there's a bank card in - I had one forwarded from the UK - it never arrived and a couple of subsequent ones never arrived. I suspect someone was waiting for a PIN code to come).

The Irish AnPost might be different, however I suspect they do the same thing now.

UK, Ireland / Pack from Ireland to Poland via An Post [16]

hey send them to a courier service in Poland who then distributes the mail from the UK?

Yes, they use a private company. As of earlier this year.

Too many things just never arrived.

UK, Ireland / Pack from Ireland to Poland via An Post [16]

Most likely they work with THE local post office. An Post in Ireland is what Poszta Polska is in Poland

Not all post offices co-operate with Poczta Polska due to constant theft, even of tracked items. The Royal Mail stopped a while ago, as did several others. Not sure about AnPost, however there's a strong chance they don't. If it's a courier they should try to redeliver - An email to them via the contact bit of their website should say who they co-operate with in Poland.

he median income and educaitonal status

In what way does either of the above affect human and civil rights in Poland?

These are broadly respected for all citizens, residents or visitors regardless of income, age, educational level, race, religion or other superstition, skin colour, nationality, sexuality or gender.

Food / Can you do online food shopping in Poland? Supermarkets. [42]

Besides the fact that it is never crowded (thanks to Biedronka next door

Even before Biedronka was there it was always fairly quiet - I think the location has a lot to do with that; the competition from the two shopping malls nearby. A nice cafe there too. And yes, I agree about the French products - they've got some very good things there.

We've looked at online shopping (for when I'm working away - my other half has mobility issues so it would be a real help to him) but not really found anything good.

Travel / Which Poland's city is LGBT friendly? [43]

also that they are kind of "hidden" so necessary to know where to find them ;).

Not so hidden nowadays - all listed online. Plus if you go in one, they'll tell you where the others are and often a bar will give out free entry tickets for a club. Warsaw is the best bet really.

Study / Is the University of Warsaw good? [26]

I believe that people are NOT interested in studying at all. What they want is a VISA

I think it's often both. The chance to make a new life in a different place.
