Po polsku / Niedouk czy co? [68]

No ja nie wiem. Polskie kosmetyki chociażby - Eris, Ziaja, Bielenda? Kupuję je przez internet z polskiego sklepu w UK! Albo niektóre marki spożywcze, nawet regionalne? Mleczarnie i zakłady mięsne?

PRODUKUJE WED£UG ORYGINALNEJ POLSKIEJ MYŚLI TECHNICZNEJ, REINWESTUJE ZNACZNĄ CZĘŚĆ ZYSKÓW, ZATRUDNIA POLAKÓW, P£ACI POLSKIE PODATKI I JESZCZE SWOIMI WYROBAMI PODBIJA ŚWIAT!

Life / Sweets in Shoes - old Polish tradition on December 6 (Mikolaj)? [13]

I got the sweets in my slippers / shoes, under the pillow, hidden away on the bookcase, or variously arranged in other unexpected places in the room. I think that was the general idea - to have fun looking for them! :-)

Life / Sweets in Shoes - old Polish tradition on December 6 (Mikolaj)? [13]

Traditions are usually observed in countryside, not in the cities.

???
Care to explain what you meant by that? I'm more or less a city girl, and yet have observed a multitude of traditions, incl. 6th Dec.

In Wielkopolska, Kujawy, Kashubia and Western Pomerania gifts for Christmas traditionally brings "Gwiazdor", in Małopolska - Little Angel, in Upper Silesia - Little Jesus.

The Baby Jesus brings Christmas gifts to Czech children as well. I always had St. Nicholas bring my 6th Dec. gifts, and the Baby Jesus, assisted by angels, would bring me my Christmas Eve presents (you had to leave a window open near the tree and leave the room for a bit so they wouldn't be shy) ;-)

Life / Sweets in Shoes - old Polish tradition on December 6 (Mikolaj)? [13]

You can hide the sweets anywhere, though shoes are a popular option. The idea is that kids wake up tomorrow and check to see whether Saint Nicholas brought them anything. If they were bad, you might consider throwing in a potato or some coals for good measure. ;-)

I can still remember how exciting it was to wake up early on the 6th (you couldn't sleep because of the excitement) and start rummaging around your room trying to locate the goodies. These would be largely symbolic, like some oranges or walnuts, sweets, or maybe a new ornament for the Christmas tree... but lots of fun :-)

Nie, po prostu ten ktoś mówi potoczną polszczyzną. Jeżeli jednak tak napisze w jakimś oficjalnym kontekście, to się troszeczkę pogrąży. Porównywalne z błędem typu "it's" zamiast "its". Mimo wszysto jednak niedoukiem bym takiego kogoś nie nazwała. To za duże słowo na tak drobny błąd.

Language / Hejka / Nara - a trendy youth greeting in Poland? [26]

Hejka and sorki have been around for literally ages... Why don't you get in touch with some Polish teenagers and talk to them directly? They would be the ones to tell you what's really trendy.

you must be the only person who would enjoy a outdoor barbecue or a dip in the ocean in the freezing cold.

I never realised that having barbecues and swimming in the ocean were the only things you could do outdoors, summer or winter. I was so ignorant that I went cross-country skiing and trekking in the mountains instead!

Would a statement like that: a life of an average middle class Pole would correspond with a typical British labours' class life standard at best be a far fetched conclusion?

I honestly think you're comparing apples and oranges here.

So a young married couple with a baby on the way living in a two/three room flat with their parents is what you would call comfortable living.

You said 3-4 people on 40-50 meters. Well, I used to live on approx. 50 sq. meters with my ex and two children, no problems there, and it was quite comfortable. It's what you're brought up to expect that makes you think something is comfortable or not. Living with the in-laws though is a different kettle of fish, and wouldn't be fun even on 200 sq. meters.

BTW, what's wrong with using public transport in a large city esp. when it's much easier and cheaper that way?

If you live on the outskirts of Warsaw and your kids are at university then I would expect 3 or 4 cars in the family.

Utter and complete nonsense. Ever heard of public transport?

3-4 people living in 40-50 m2 is not a life.

Are you really that spoilt?

Real Estate / Apartment in Poland is not up to standard; right to terminate the rental agreement? [78]

I have the right to complain and get this fixed wouldn't you think?

That's what I keep saying - you need to talk to them and tell them you're not happy with the situation. I doubt whether they would install a shower cabin in the bathroom just to make you happy though - and I presume you saw the bathroom arrangements before signing the agreement anyways. But they should definitely do something about the draft as well as explain the gas bill situation more clearly to you - ask them firmly for receipts on your payments.

it is not how the world works, it is how people operate at the lower levels of society.

Oh really? So the "higher levels" of society would never think of taking advantage of someone who is trusting and inexperienced then? There will always be predators out there, rich and poor, large and small, and the only way to defend yourself (in ANY country of the world) is to always have everything in writing. The agency I am renting from here in the UK literally swamps me with paperwork over the tiniest detail. They don't take my word for anything, and I don't take theirs.

Is this how things work in Poland or am I getting the short end of the stick on this one?

This is how things work anywhere in the world if you're too trusting, sadly. I'm starting to have a rather bad feeling about all of this. No matter when and where you are, you should always insist on getting everything in writing. You said you give cash to the landlord in the presence of the realtor. Does the realtor at least keep some sort of track of these transactions, like a ledger you get to sign or whatever?

people who just kind of go along and say okay to almost everything.

How about instead of starting the conversation with the moving out part, you start by asking about the gas bills (seem very high to me also) and about the problem with the kitchen floor, and see where that takes you. I assume the realtor is giving you receipts for your cash payments? Then, if they seem uncomfortable and shifty, you will know that it's really time to move.

If it's genuinely just the kitchen floor, and the rest of the flat is fine, the price is fine, the location's OK - I would still talk to the landlord before making any sudden decisions. Apart from anything else, it might not be terribly easy to find another flat which is flawless plus has the right price, location etc. And if the OP has not even talked to his landlord about the problem, we are unable to give him any REAL advice.

run far away from a flat where the 'contract' is in a foreign language!

AFAIK Fredrikkk is not Polish, so a contract written in Polish would serve him even less. Fredrikkk, can't you talk to your landlord about the situation? If everything else is OK and it's just the cold kitchen floor, maybe you could come to some sort of an agreement - like a reduction in rent, or maybe the landlord genuinely did not know about it (if it's a brand new flat, say, or one in which they've never lived themselves), and the problem could be fixed? Why does everyone here automatically assume that nothing can be done, the landlord is dodgy, and the only way out is to leave the flat?
