UK, Ireland / Sugar tax in the UK. Polish friends addicted? [55]

at the university, you have mostly "rich" kids

I'll tell them that on Monday! It'll brighten up their day.

All studies say that Polish kids are close to be the fattest in the EU.

I'd be interested to see some of the stats. I can only offer the evidence of my own eyes. There are certainly more fat Polish kids than there used to be, but it's nothing like the UK, for example.

UK, Ireland / Sugar tax in the UK. Polish friends addicted? [55]

I have over three hundred young adult university students this year. Not a single one could be described as obese. Three or four are on the porky side, but all the others are in trim. In which other European nation could this be seen?

If anything, the Polish diet is salt rather than sugar laden.

That's a fact.

Work / Thirteenth Salary in Poland [13]

And do you do extra-mural teaching?

Not this year.

Bullying and corruption were rife.

I've never seen either in the twelve years I've taught at the uni.

the **** university salary

That hasn't changed. It's a scandal, but what can you do?

Food / Best Polish Potato Variety for Mashing [67]

Irga are quite low in starch, so according to the experts they shouldn't be good mashers, but I like them. If anyone can tell us the Polish equivalent of the Russet, we might be on to something good.

Work / Thirteenth Salary in Poland [13]

It is a communist ploy to remove proper entitlement to a living monthly salary.

Perhaps. I'd certainly rather have a good pay rise than the 13th salary, which usually comes well into the following year.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

You are being disingenuous, Pol. You know fine well what I mean. PiS runs on a Roman Catholic ticket. No doubt some priests will be telling people how to vote from the pulpit as they usually do at election time. Also, some of us who are not religious lead quite sober, modest and socially responsible lives, and find your calling us hedonists insulting as well as wrong.

G, perhaps you could petition PiS to have people like me disenfranchised.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

PiS leader Kaczyński said on Sunday that if PiS win you can expect peace, calm and a plan for Poland.

He also said that "With God's help" PiS would win, and that's the main reason I could never vote for them. Religion and politics are unhappy bedfellows, as we can see the world over. Any party which claims divine support (e.g. Hezbollah, the 'Party of God') scares the life out of me.

Wulkan, you are a little hysterical if you think I wanted you to stop contacting your family. Let's leave it there, as you seem a bit upset.

Gumishu, my personal belief is no representation without contribution. It's quite simple. In the days when I could vote in the UK, even though I didn't live there, I didn't because I didn't feel morally entitled to do so. Other people are free to think otherwise.

I'm not trying to tell you which party to vote for (I'm not a fan of any of them, and haven't voted for a party in 30 years, just against others). My point was simply that I believe that if a person has chosen to make another country their home, as we have, they should consider their right to vote in the old country's elections, whether that right exists in law or not.

OK, if you're happy for Americans who have never lived in Poland and contribute nothing to Poland to vote in Polish elections, fine. I'm not, so we'll have to agree to differ.

If my vote effects your life it will be for good if so.

Well, that's highly debatable. I remember the PiS coalition with Leper and Giertych. My point was that I believe people should not vote in a country where they don't live. In extreme cases, e.g. the USA, some people can vote in Polish elections. That's undemocratic.

Wulkan, I don't live in the UK, so I don't, in fact can't, vote in UK elections, which I think is fair. Your vote may affect my life, even though you don't live here. How can that be right?

Travel / Polski Bus experiences in Poland? [17]

flaki, pierogi, greasy soup and greasy pancakes

The other day I took to work home made lightly grilled salmon with Provencal herbs and wild mushroom risotto. Who needs railway food?

Real Estate / Why are toilets and sinks in Poland always separated by a door? [33]

For me, it still makes no sense for the washing machine to be in the bathroom.

Why not? The bathroom is for washing. The kitchen is for cooking, not dirty clothes. Our machine is in the boiler room, a happy medium, where the noise doesn't disturb us.

I'll be voting. Not for PiS. It'll be interesting to see how many of the posters most concerned with the moral policing of Poland will be casting a vote.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

PiS councilor, Janusz Kapuściński...proposed that the street leading to a waste incineration plant should be called "Oświęcimska".

Only in Poland could someone say this and not have their political career instantly ended. Shame on him. No doubt he will be blaming people for lacking a sense of humour.

Life / Surgery for a cat in hospital in Poland? [12]

Great news. I'm so glad the comments gave you paws for thought. Get some tree bark and attach it to a verticle pipe or table leg. Your cat will enjoy scratching that more than the wallpaper.

Travel / I discovered Poland - a nice country [62]

When I lived with my in-laws I had to stand guard over anything I cooked. If I didn't, I'd come back to find that salt - and plenty of it - had been added. Once I came home to find a chilli con carne of mine that was happily maturing had been thrown out, after being declared "Guantanamo". A little heat was a no-no, but stroke-inducing levels of salt are deemed fine.

Shizuka, just because something is legal, it doesn't make it right. I'll make the same offer Dolno made. I'm in the east. Give the cat a break.
