News / "It's too late for Germany" (but not for Poland) [1798]

What's her desire to eliminate cultural and language and religious differences? I don't like that, do you?

I doubt that is her desire nor in her power...

But I really think the future global world will be abit like the US...lotsa different cultures and languages and religious differences still be able to live side by side under one government with the same set of civil rights and laws for all.

I don't think that's imperialism but a kind of necessity and logical consequence of centuries old developments...starting with tribes, then federadion of tribes, then nation states, then unions of nation states...

You're confusing a lengthy process of collecting necessary documents and analysis [and also calculations of war loses]

Well....it doesn't takes place exactly "KNOW"...but is a rethoric staple by PiS since 2006...remember Anna Fotyga?

Produce me a photocopy of such a document.

You want something, you go and produce...it should be easy since, in your opinion, it's a clear case!

...damn typos... It should be "NOW" of course....not "know"...

No, it is because this government is all talk and bluster but no action.

When even anti-german PiS is "all talk and bluster but no action" than you should ask yourself why that is. Wouldn't they rather have long "acted" if they knew they had any chance of success? That their claims had any legal basis? Even the smallest one?

Or do they just "blustering" because they KNOW it's all crap?

For me the answer is totally clear...and hence the outcome.

Interesting info from a Pole, starting with the Potsdam conference till today:

Germany can afford to take up the slack,

Depends on the political will....especially if it goes into the so called newer members. It's hard to explain it to a German why he should pay more for PiS Poland or Orban's Hungary...when they are confronted with the likes of reparations and accusations.

Their anti-german rethoric might come good at home...but it's rather a kind of "biting the hand thats feeding him". Not smart!

Would I want to pay some more Tax-Euro for some Dolno? For sure! :)

Would I want to pay some more for some Spike? Ermm....rather not! :(

the whole thing is a very clumsy attempt to blackmail Germany ahead of the next budget negotiations.

Especially in the wake of the Brexit. Less net-payer means either the few left pay a bigger share or the funds are revisited and reduced. Which would mean some billions less for Poland...

To annoy Germany is really not the smartest way to go about it...I wonder how the successor of Merkel will handle that...if he/she is as nice and polite as Merkel...

Yet PiS say nothing about it, and you have to ask yourself why.

Chickens! :)

They see "Mutti" Merkel and think they can wrangle some more monies from her...the nice, polite woman she is. Attacking her and with her Germany costs Poland nothing! As it is beneath her to treat Poland likewise back. She will keep to the treaties no matter what.

They see Putin and don't even dare!

Poland could go to any international court if they mean it...but on legal grounds they would lose and they know it, that's why they don't. So it's tried with political pressure...good luck! :)

Not to forget that one requirement for membership in the EU is the closure of open conflicts to avoid that the EU "inherits" conflicts between members. A demand for reparation from another member is for sure an open conflict. I dare even say that a membership had not been possible if Poland back then had claimed any legal rights of further reparations from Germany. That leaves only one conclusion, it's over and done!

All tries to keep that topic in the headlines is made by PiS totally for domestic reasons only...you fall for that at your own peril!

Yes, we might end up paying to Namibia....

Agreed. Namibia is still an open case...they got no compensation whatsoever...no legal closure too, as far as I know.

Our friend here seems remarkably unwilling to discuss the issue of Poland getting repatriations from Russia,

Astounding, isn't it.... :)

I doubt Russia has subscribed to the same treaties as Germany and Poland have..so a polish claim for russian reparations should have better prospects of success than getting some from Germany!

So why is Poland left with the bill to pay reparations to families who lost property in WWII, seems a bit one sided and unfair to me. or am I missing something?

It isn't reparations...it's compensation if I'm informed correctly. And only for Jews, not for Germans. It's about jewish property which was given to Poles or taken over by the new polish state and never was given back to the survivors and relatives, correct?

You want to give Pommerania and Silesia back to Germany?

Why stop at that? Poland should fight to re-gain the Kresy again...yeah...let's turn back time and borders!

Would you tell the US to change their ways too? Ever heard of world wide anti-americanism? Well..in Europe it's Germany, especially with France falling so far behind during the last 10/15 years.

Every big and powerful country get's this treatment, it's par of the course for smaller countries to mistrust the stronger one and NOTHING Germany can do to change that, short of partition itself to make itself small and weak. That's the ONLY thing to understand about that...

The EU is Europe's best bet to dissolve some of Germany's power and put it in "shackles" if you so want. That's why the anti-EU stance of some nationalists is so incredible dumb that it boggles the mind.

And now....could you please stop harking on about....it get's really, really, really repetitive and boring. Especially as neither I nor Germany can do anything realistic to change that!

Try this. Imagine that tomorrow you wake up in a world (world #1) where every single thing invented or created by the blacks is gone.

I for one could not do without my coffee...really!
(I'm not so hot about mathematics though)

and someone throws you in a wagon for a half day ride to the doctor, whod only cure you thanks to modern medicine.

...or...as it was called "The Middle Ages" in Europe?

I can't help to think there is a great overestimation of the "white" achievements coming from their current prevalence. It's an illusion to believe that this has always been that way or that it always will be so.

Depends once again on how one measures "accomplishment".

Well...they made it out of Africa for once? That was very brave! And where would we be now if they had stayed put? :)

You don't need to be a hobby-historian to see that basic rule.

You even said so yourself...especially the negative stereotyping resorts generally to "THEM" (insert lotsa crappy stuff) against "US" (insert lotsa good stuff).

To hurl the same wild accusations with "IMHO" just isn't the same to them, it seems...

Now that's easy...the blackies!

We all are descendants from some black people somewhere in Africa...now if that isn't an accomplishment then what is?

Heh:) I use it more often than not! :)

But generally nationalist nutters thrive on the "We" against "You"...believing they are speaking for millions of people, the whole people and who begs to differ is either brainwashed or an idiot or a commie..or everything together!

she should be respectful towards her roots.

She was! I doubt she can not be respectful...you can think of her politics what you want (I'm not a fan either btw.) but she was always known as a quiet, pragmatic and respectful personality. Even sometimes a little bit "to" quiet.

I guess many of her opponents are gonna miss her for that...

You didn't know?

Merkel is of German and Polish descent. Her paternal grandfather, Ludwik Kaźmierczak, was a German policeman of Polish ethnicity, who had taken part in Poland's struggle for independence in the early 20th century.

One of the many millions of "Gerpoles" living in both countries...we are so mixed up! :)

There is a subtle difference.

I wonder about that "closer" too...after all the polish gov made anti-german propaganda their daily staple.

Even as they are now crying about Merkel leaving, as they very well know it won't get any warmer in Berlin for Poland now, they couldn't help themselves and blasting any good relationship Poland and Germany still had from before PiS times...

That Poles and Germans still grew closer inspite of all that is astounding and proof of the resilience of the polish people! :)

Merkel is not going to get a warm welcome by the crowds

And here a reality check from this year:

Poles and Germans growing closer together, survey shows

After decades of mistrust, Poland and Germany have increasingly similar views on their joint future.

thefirstnews.com/article/poles-and-germans-growing-closer-together-survey-shows-879

The vast majority of Germans and most Poles want the countries' mutual relations to be focused more on the present and the future, a survey has found.

Something to remember...better to ignore the few nutters here, they are so not speaking for the majority of Poles who is equally pro-EU and sees a common future with Germany! :)
