News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

For me,this guy says it all intelligently.

Stefan Tompson? He's an absolute joke for so many reasons, not least the fact that his actual connections to Poland are weak at best. He turned up here a couple of years ago hoping to get money from the Polish government, and I know someone from PiS who openly ridicules him as being a village peasant.

He's also well known for his racist views concerning South African society.

His sister is just as bad, and they're both well known for publishing false and misleading information about Poland in English.

News / An EU army. Impact on Poland [155]

Poland should, and will, arm itself to a level where it becomes too hard to mess with by the neighbours ie. where the cost of attacking Poland would be too high

Except it won't. The Polish navy is in a dreadful state, the air force is completely dependent on NATO, and the land forces are in disarray because so much money has been diverted to the ideologically motivated WOT goons who won't be able to offer anything in the event of war.

Of course, the Polish military also reflects the reality, that is the threat only comes from Russia and Belarus. Yet, the reality on the ground is that there's nothing that could stop a Russian invasion except the NATO deterrent. That's why we need close and deep military integration with the rest of Europe.

And now imagine living in a village full of people who follow a certain moral and ethical code.

Fantasy, at least in Poland. Villages are home to some of the worst behaviours in Poland, including rampant alcoholism, animal abuse and domestic violence.

People aren't suddenly going to change their ways and become moral citizens.

Except there's no evidence of Germany doing just that. Meanwhile, there's plenty of evidence of Poland keeping refugees in appalling conditions.

As I said IF Hungary is under Russian influence then Germany are their vasal state.

The difference is that Germany is big and strong enough to negotiate heavily with Russia. Hungary isn't, and that's the vital difference.

That nuclear power plant essentially binds Hungary to Russian energy for a lifetime.

Isn't the scenario you're describing simply a question of good manners, etiquette, and basic human decency?

It is, but if everyone lives their lives that way, you have a pretty decent country. Switzerland is a fantastic example of this - they have rules for everything, but those rules exist to make life better. For instance, my friend lives in a place where it's a no-no to carry out flat renovations, except during normal working hours. So, no-one wakes you up on a Saturday/Sunday morning drilling at 7am (as happens frequently in Poland).

Poles seem to think that this sort of thing limits "freedom", but in reality, Poles are the ones who have to live in a rather chaotic environment in which everything is possibly allowed or tolerated, meaning they have no freedom at all.

The amount of trash in the forests in Poland is sickening :(

can always change their mind, who cares about Slovaks.

Czechs won't change their mind for one simple reason: they know where the money lies. Czech people are pragmatic, they're not going to follow Poland's lead into the abyss.

Yeah sure they are

Basic geopolitics, Ironside.

Few Europeans want Germans playing any part in a European army if it it is ever created.

Why? They've got a decent military tradition, they're not interested in offensive wars and they've got a powerful economy behind them. Exactly the type of ally you want.

But if you are patriotic, there must surely be a part of you that thinks, that your country is at least as good as anyone else.

I've seen a definition of patriotism being "working towards the common good". I agree with that - for me, a good patriotic attitude is to do everything you can so that you make things better for everyone. Stuff like burning rubbish or cheating on taxes is obviously very unpatriotic, while volunteering (for instance, with kids or lonely old people) is a good thing.

For instance, sitting on a tram swearing and drinking is clearly ruining things for everyone else, so such a person should be denounced as unpatriotic. The person who gives an old/pregnant person his seat - that's patriotism, as their actions are clearly making life better for others.

rise of V4

What rise? It's a talking shop. The Czechs and Slovaks already made it very clear that the V4 isn't an alternative to the EU, and the Hungarians are too busy doing deals with Russia.

inception of Three Seas Initiative

A talking shop as well. It's meaningless when you consider the participants - Croatia, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Slovakia are under Austrian/German influence, Hungary is under Russian influence and the Baltic States are under Swedish/Finnish influence. No-one takes it seriously, it's simply designed as a chance for these countries to have some grand talking shop where they discuss issues that Western Europe doesn't particularly care about.

Conservative government in Poland

You mean a communist government that would block the formation of an EU army because it's not a new version of the Warsaw Pact.

Still, nationalist dreams are hilarious. One can only wonder what kind of excuses they would come up with after the Americans fail to help with a decisive Russian attack.

I dont think it was males with hoods or football hooligans - in fact it was mostly families and children

It wasn't that. It was mostly male supporters of PiS and football ultras, with a small minority of women and children.

No political structure whatsoever. A union of a free, independent countries with their own monetary and political systems and laws.

Except most EU countries don't want that. You'll notice that despite all the rhetoric from Greece, when the time came, they submitted rather than go it alone, and for good reason.

Busted.

They already clarified that it was a mistake. Seems to me as if you have a credibility problem.

Still, now we have three separate people here claiming to have attended the march on Sunday, yet none of them have provided any evidence for it ;)

All in all it was a stupid venture (the more you know about Vietnam the stupider it seems) but it wasn't as divisive as media would have you believe.

Thank you Maf, much appreciated. I know shockingly little about it beyond the big picture, where it seems to have been a ridiculous idea from the very beginning. I guess the Americans also overestimated their own capabilities to actually win a war there.

Keep to the topic please

in that time I didn't see any racists.

Really? So not only you missed the Italian self-declared fascists, but you also missed this?

twitter.com/notesfrompoland/status/1061709307220246528

See, it's very obvious what the agenda is at the minute - you're posting everywhere that "everything was calm, everything was peaceful"...meanwhile, the police are hunting down plenty of people for various crimes committed.

It was pretty much all families and students.

HAHAHA. Of course it was, of course it was. You're just repeating the "party line" from the nationalists, nothing more. Where are these families and students? Why do you and your type always present pictures from completely different occasions, pretending that they were from this event?

Unity makes strength.

What strength? All I saw was a bunch of villagers on a yearly excursion to a big city, nothing more.

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Some 200,000 people took part in an Independence Day march in the Polish capital on Sunday, the minister for the interior said.

Those of us living in Poland know that these numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Then again, you believe everything that comes out of the White House, so it doesn't surprise me that you believe everything the government tells you.

Study / CELTA course in Poland: Kraków vs Wrocław [21]

they don't seem to be teaching anything, it's just practice meant to keep (paying) students running in place and eventually graduate to the next book.

And of course, doing exams after each step too. I noticed recently just how hard they've been pushing the low level exams, even though they're worthless.

That's the entire problem with PiS, if you ask me. They're utterly clueless about how to behave internationally, and even if they want to resort to PRL-era bumpkin tactics, it doesn't mean it works with everyone else.

I did see a very well reasoned argument that PiS are doing this sort of thing on purpose, because it's the same petty small minded behaviour that their supporters are known for.

Ah, that would explain why you find those British books so jarring!

Wonder what the reasons are, apart from the obvious, namely funding.

Generally speaking, the BC was always a form of British soft power. The UK used to be interested in the CEE region, but about 20 years ago, they more or less started diverting funding into Asia and the ME. The same thing was seen in Germany - what used to be a powerful cultural institution is now a shell of what it used to be.

It's a shame, because the French and Germans have continued heavily funding their cultural presence here.

British "textbooks" are the worst

Ugh, if I ever see another copy of Headway or that ghastly Hot Spot series, I'll cry.

I've just seen that there's also a 'American File' series - ever seen it? I'm only familiar with the (New) English File ones.

Hahaha, got to love these numbers, because it's an obvious and ridiculous exaggeration.

Same kind of weakling that would "try" to sue a bank because they wouldn't hold the door open for him with a baby stroller. lol

Let's be honest Jimmy, it's only when you get nervous that you attack other posters. I wonder why you're so nervous, are you concerned that you can be easily traced through your contacts with "Deep", who isn't anonymous? I wonder how quickly he would squeal on you...

Law / UK Citizen resident in Poland dying intestate - inherited debt issue [17]

Don't worry, it only means "don't spam the same thing repeatedly".

Yes, the most important thing is to keep the same line - that she will not sign anything until it's received in a hard copy.

It's explained here (in Polish, but use the DeepL online translator - it works well) - aeger.pl/dziedziczenie-ustawowe-przez-dzieci-i-malzonka

In short, no need to rush, but do get her to ask which court is processing the inheritance. If they refuse to give this information, then you've got solid evidence that they're attempting to perform some sort of trickery. In this case, they can almost certainly write to the relevant court and inform them that the executor of the will is acting illegally and to their detriment.

Law / UK Citizen resident in Poland dying intestate - inherited debt issue [17]

It's very complicated

Actually, in this case, it's not so complicated at all. I think I've sussed out what's happening:

They want her to sign over the inheritance for whatever reason, and given you mentioned a 5 bedroom house, that means that it could easily be worth 200,000GBP or more. So, in this case, what you can do is register on this forum, make a couple of posts and PM me. I'll help your daughters for free - I'm not a lawyer, but I know Polish law well. You don't need legal representation to deal with it, but what you do need is to be aware of how Polish families work and the tricks that they do.

Basically, she should do nothing at this time. However, the most vital and important thing is to find out which court will deal with the case. In the event of them trying to screw your daughters over, they can petition the court directly.
