History / Foreigners in Poland - 1980-1983 [9]

I met an Englishman who's lived in Poland since the mid-1960 without a break. Even sounds Polish now.

Law / EU citizen - Register in Poland - Amount of a bank account [8]

From what I know, the minimum amount to have in a bank is 2500 PLN

Unless it's changed, there's no minimum amount and in any case the OP has the right to live in Poland without any conditions.

I am an EU citizen

You don't need to register at all if you're an EU citizen - they can't force you, nor can they make you leave.

Does anyone have an idea about the amount of money is needed? I believe 2500pln are not enough.

Makes no difference - if you want to actually register, you need to show you have a job, but as I say, registration is entirely unnecessary unless you want to vote or apply for credit within Poland.

News / Prime Minister of Poland, Ewa Kopacz, shops at.... Biedronka? [20]

as to buying her vegetables and fruit, why not buying from Poles selling on the streets in the summer (what I do?).

Most of that fruit and veg actually comes from the wholesale market - grown in Holland. It's still good to support the people who sell it though :-)

Classifieds / Flat in Krakow for German students for one semester [24]

Try Gumtree Krakow. Make sure you tick the box 'od wlasciciela' (from the owner) or whatever it's called to filter out agencies. Also run the phone number in the ads through google to make sure it isn't an agent pretending not to be.

Additionally, you can make a free 'flat wanted' advert on the same website...

4 bedroom flats are rare though - many flats in Poland though have the living room used as a bedroom (they eat in the kitchen) so a 4 room flat would be normal.

Law / Financial Proof for Poland's Karta Pobytu (Residence Card) [15]

You don't need to translate anything as far as I know, but yes, when you get there you should open a Polish account. You don't need to put all your money in it as far as I know, however your university's admissions tutor will be able to advise in case the rules have changed.

Law / Financial Proof for Poland's Karta Pobytu (Residence Card) [15]

No, your normal bank statement from home is what they want to see, although you should open an account in Poland when you get here to avoid transfer fees and costs for using cash machines.

If you were from the EU, you wouldn't need any sort of permit at all.

Enjoy your studies in Poland.

News / Prime Minister of Poland, Ewa Kopacz, shops at.... Biedronka? [20]

It's not only the food, but also the staff. It seems that they've gone away from the old idea of being a bit more expensive but being better to trying to compete with Lidl and Carrefour for having the worst and sulkiest staff.

Whereas in Biedronka (at least in my local one on Heroldów) they're very polite.

"vegetables are good in biedronka"

It's true - they are excellent.

Travel / Buying Zlotys in Poland (4-week holiday - Lublin/Zamosc) [19]

as I've checked several websites looking for best rate I found out that unless you're going to exchange great amount there's no big difference between UK's and Poland's rate

You'll find that it's generally better in Poland - trust me on that one.

Best is Halifax credit card

Yes, but remember it's the Halifax credit card that's good value not the Halifax debit - that one is particularly bad value.

Travel / Buying Zlotys in Poland (4-week holiday - Lublin/Zamosc) [19]

Is this true?

Yes. Always. A noticeably better rate.

And do you have to take Pounds a Sterling cash as opposed to buying Zlotys with a UK debit card?

Kantors change cash. Maybe a few accept cards, however I've never anyone using one in a Kantor.

Also, the bank machines in Poland accept UK debit and cards (Visa and MasterCard) and give a reasonable rate. MasterCard better than visa. They do usually (unless it's a Halifax credit card and a couple of others) charge a £2.50 transaction fee, so best to just use once and take plenty out. Still much better than changing anywhere in the UK. Some machines offer you the

Also (and this is the same the world around) don't change at the airport. If you need some for a taxi, just change a bit or use the cash machine in Arrivals. Some machines offer you the choice of accepting a guaranteed fixed rate - never, ever choose that option unless you expect the pound to collapse overnight! The normal rate is better. It is a scam run by the banks and there is plenty money saving expert for example) on the internet about this.

If you want to change at a Kantor, have a look at several (in the city centres they are close) and choose the best rate for GBP - kupmeans buy (i.e. how many zlotych you'll get, sprzedaz means sell, i.e. how many zlotych a pound will cost you.

News / Heil-Hitlering Korwin-Mikke in European Parliament [29]

He wasn't like that 15 years ago

No, he was just a minor clown with silly ideas that didn't spill out abroad back then. Perhaps it's time now for him to be put out to grass. Or to sleep.

Palikot is stupid....like a fox!

A strange metaphor, "stupid like a fox". Contrary.

One good think about Korwin Mikke, Macierewicz, the Giertychs, Kaczynski, Ziobro, is that the more they make tasteless fools of themselves as Korwin Mikke has done in the European parliament (and not for the first time) and the older Giertych before him, the more the voters can see the true colours of the Polish right-wing.

Love / Confused with my former co-worker - absolutely stunning Polish woman [21]

because she has/had some sad experiences in her life that made me emotionally turn into

Avoid. Repeat after me, slowly and loudly: "avoid".

she is 38

Young! She may seem like an older woman to you, but really she's just a kid.

this Polish lady is so sweet, beautiful, and different from your typical "pretty" American woman that she's truly one of a kind.

Which means you can't 'read' her as easily even though you have doubts that led you to post here. Trust your instincts. has she told you all her troubles? Her whole life story about how people have hurt her? Europeans don't do that nearly as much as Americans. When they do, it's often a warning sign.

Being young and attractive, I can get with other women

You've said that 3 times now! Why not post a picture and let us decide ;-)

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

You surely don't believe "gays" are boringly and stereotypically monothematic, do you?

Some of them doubtless, others not. However the whole point is that rights are universal. They don't depend on the character or habits of the individual or their achievements, fine qualities, or on what they excel at or don't. Or anything else. Human and civil rights are non-negotiable.

News / Heil-Hitlering Korwin-Mikke in European Parliament [29]

if you put Korwin-Mikke and Palikot on the same line, you don't know Poland.

Indeed.

I have seen the former.

You know that JK-M he turned up in the middle of that football riot against the Russians on Poniatowski Bridge in Euro 2008?

Not correct, but Pan Kaczyński is 100% Marxist in terms of his illogical economic math.

Spot on. At least he wasn't doing Hitler salutes in the European parliament. I did like those posters during the failed Kaczynski(ch) regime "Ein Reich, Ein Volk, Zwei Kaczory!".

News / Heil-Hitlering Korwin-Mikke in European Parliament [29]

If anyone wants to see the tawdry display, here it is: welt.de/politik/ausland/article143712210/Polnischer-EU-Abgeordneter-loest-mit-Hitler-Gruss-Eklat-aus.html

Every bit as tacky as when Macierewicz, the well-know and notorious Smolenskist and PiS flapper chained himself to the speaker's chair in parliament (and also chained himself to his desk). At least that didn't get picked up outside the country and bring Poland into disrepute as Lech Kaczynski's unwanted VIP flight to an international summit to disrupt the Polish (elected) delegate did.

do crackpots such as Korwin, Palikot, the nationalists (in the past the Beer Lovers' Party) add a touch of colour to the poltical scene, do they make their country look foolish or are they downright harmful to the body politic?

All three. The Polish conservative ultra-nationalists are a disgrace - Maciej Giertych & Son, Macierewicz, Ziobro, Kaczor. Even worse when it spills beyond the borders and the press pick it up.

Love / My wedding gift - what to do now? The estimated value of a gift for a bride in Poland. [8]

Finally, the middle daughter said she thinks the cake will be 1100 zlotys

600 US dollars

Yes, they're taking the **** and have ordered the most expensive because a foreigner is paying. Yes, you're daft for not agreeing a limit.

Just pay them the 1100 and cease all contact with these people.

and, who goes to europe on an emailed invitation anyway??

Plenty - what were you doing here and getting involved with such needy, prissy people anyway?

Love / Confused with my former co-worker - absolutely stunning Polish woman [21]

I can't shake off this notion that she may be into me.

Probably more than just a 'notion' if she's:

touch me a lot on my hands, shoulders and back

and

rarely take her eyes off me

If she touches you, it's because she "means business".

Yep,

Basically either do it or don't do it. If you do, there are all the usual problems and you'll probably regret it. If you don't, you'll definitely regret it but won't have the problems. Only you know the answer and if you don't you're probably daft enough to do it anyway and sod the consequences.

I'm a very attractive young guy

If that's true, you should be getting plenty anyway without getting involved with a married cougar who touches you up - they are ten a penny and this one sounds like trouble. If you live in a big city, why not - you can just walk away from it and block her calls. make sure you don't ditch her just after sex and get nice texts/emails in case she cries rape after you've dumped her.

If you live in a smaller place and you're both in the same community, better not even go there.

Too late to edit the last post but just a bit of advice. Older people (regardless of the genders involved) who flirt gently and nicely with

very attractive young

people are often thoroughly decent. Older people who

touch me a lot

are usually bad news. Stay away unless you want more hassle than sex.

News / Lech Walesa vs Immigration: Brits humiliated him at London Heathrow Airport [105]

But i really don`t understand why Brits needed to rape Walesa, to humiliate him publicly at the airport. It for sure was kind of message to Poles

Don't be silly. It was just a normal check. He probably thought he was entitled to some sort of special treatment. He already gets VIP treatment at Heathrow anyway. Just (like anyone else other than diplomats or serving heads of state) not at customs or security. Even Bill Clinton and George Bush aren't exempt...
