Life / IVF Clinics and Women in Poland? [20]

Religious taboos largely, as shown in the parts of the world it has been cropping up. There is a reason that IVF is fought for and why legal restrictions have been removed in Poland. That napro thing is to fertility treatment what the rhythm method is to birth control or reading tea leaves is to scientific analysis.

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

but when you killed them you had the Polish flag

Not so much so. That confederate rag was the emblem of very a short-lived and discredited break-away regime which was based on slavery and oppression. The Polish flag has centuries of history and doesn't have negative connotations.

News / Poland's Archbishop Wesolowski trial starts [28]

It might be genuine - he is quite old. The important thing is that justice is seen to be done - if he's innocent of all charges he should be freed. If he's guilty, he should be treated like anyone else who has committed those crimes.

I wonder what the evidential requirement is in the Vatican. Presumably there's concrete proof of the downloading child porn and that would be evidence of bad character in relation to the various other charges.

He died yesterday.

Probably of natural causes however there is expected to be a postmortem.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

Nothing that PiS haven't done for the last 8 years.

Exactly - all they can do it ineffectively try to muckrake despite being by far the dirtiest of the parties. Let's hope the voters remember what an abject and utter disaster they were when they briefly got into office through the back door.

The huge problem for PiS right now is Kukiz. His behaviour is erratic, and with his comments about destroying political orders and so on - PiS have a lot to worry about if the only viable coalition is with him.

They'll sup with the devil if it gives them another chance to be corrupt - look at last time. And yes, he will bring them down.

think a Grand Coalition between PO and PiS would serve Poland far more than letting that clown Kukiz anywhere near power.

Hopefully Platforma will not consider that - imagine having to work with the likes of Macierewicz, Kaczynski, Ziobro - nutters to a man.

Isnt napro technique a better thing all round?

No. That's promoted as an alternative for people with religious taboos against mainstream fertility treatment. It is less well know for very good reasons - mostly the far lower success rate.

News / Poland versus Greece in economy [175]

Those two are the last people to turn to when you need help

Yes. "Whoever pays the Danegeld will always have the Dane." Plus they're two of the most corrupt states which are actually able to afford to 'help'.

Something tells me that Chris_jp3 is Polish rather than Greek. 'Protege' or 'client state' indeed! Next he'll be suggesting moving the Elgin Marbles to Sosnowiec...

UK, Ireland / Opening a bank account in Poland from UK / poor CCJ credit rating? [11]

Debit MasterCard or Visa. You can use both cards abroad.

Yes - this is true, but see above about some countries' systems - plus older kinds of card like PLUS/Cirrus/Switch which were taken over by MasterCard and not all banks' systems (especially the longer established ones with older servers) have caught up to that. In Poland all bank networks are shiny and new so should take anything.

but that does not mean that your bank won't allow withdraws abroad

Sometimes a call to the bank's customer services will sort the problem. Best to just say you're visiting though and not living there - otherwise there may be other issues.

Study / Wroclaw University OR Warsaw University? [11]

what I understood from you is that Warsaw would be better Wroclaw

In my opinion yes, however Wroclaw is great too. It depends what sort of things you like really.

Is the residence permit process also the same in each city ?

Identical.

Maestro and Cirrus both belong to MasterCard - dunno if they convert at their international rate. Mastercard is almost always better than Visa for conversions but only some waive the transaction fee for foreign use (the Halifax Reward credit card and I think Nationwide).

This site: independenttraveler.com/travel-tips/money-and-insurance/atms-abroad is useful, and the moneysaving expert.co.uk I mentioned if the person is coming from the UK.

One plus in Poland is that the systems and networks are fairly new so take almost any card - the OP said his card had been refused in France - that's happened to me in a few places (sometimes one cash machine won't pay out, but one 20 metres away will), mostly in countries where the networks are more established (i.e. old-fashioned).

A very hard call. Wroclaw is a bit cheaper, Warsaw has more people and a degree from their is more prestigious. Both have good student life. Warsaw does have more people from different countries...

UK, Ireland / Opening a bank account in Poland from UK / poor CCJ credit rating? [11]

so was worrying that I was going to be screwed! Also, I'll try Halifax for a basic account too

Banks can be like that. halifax is good, but their debit card isn't great for foreign cash withdrawals due to the rate they change at plus the oversea use fee since it's done through the visa network. Best to bring some banknotes. Moneysaving.com has a list of which banks are better if you go abroad, but basically it's the ones that do the debit card via MasterCard rather than Visa.

My current UK bank won't allow me to withdraw abroad (as I found out in Paris last year!)

Halifax did that to me in Istanbul - sucked my card into the machine even. With some banks you have to ring their customer services and give them a list of countries you're likely to be in - Poland isn't a problem, but places that have a high fraud rate are.

Make sure you stay on the electoral role in the UK - CCJs are gone after 7 years and no need to mention to a prospective bank that you're in Poland :-)

Polish banks are by the way, much of a muchness. I like Nordea, others prefer different ones - there are some (even plenty) of threads on here about which one to choose.

UK, Ireland / Opening a bank account in Poland from UK / poor CCJ credit rating? [11]

1. Is it possible to open a Polish bank account whilst in the UK? This isn't strictly a problem.

No - they need to see your contract of employment etc and they will also need to see your passport, not just a scan. Open the account as soon as you arrive. Usually you can use cash machines in Poland as well as debit cards from the UK. Try the Halifax basic account - they allow this.

2. Would a poor UK credit rating affect me in setting up a Polish bank account?

No, it would make no difference whatsoever - you won't be given an overdraft facility in any case and the Polish credit reference agencies and the UK ones do not share information.

Yes, normally without unexpected issues (provided you have proper documentation, ie. EU drivers license / passport)

Nathans, your experience is as a Polish citizen in the UK, not the other way around.

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

if the murderer associated himself with a Polish flag, it would be ignored, but if he associated himself with a nazi flag or a rainbow (gay) flag, it would be exposed?

Did he? No, he didn't.

Not always. In Poland, yes. Outside? Not necessarily.

Quite. The Polish flag does not have the same connotations, nor is it used to set-identify with oppression.

News / Poland's Archbishop Wesolowski trial starts [28]

The trial has to be completed before there's any talk of throwing stones, Nathan...

Plus, I rather doubt there's anyone here who is guilty of the crime he has been charged with.

News / Poland's Archbishop Wesolowski trial starts [28]

Archbishop Wesołowski's trial starts tomorrow:

The trial of the former nuncio Józef Wesołowski from Poland marks the first time that the church has used the criminal justice system put in place by the Argentinian pontiff to handle cases of alleged clerical wrongdoing.

Allegations that Wesołowski paid teenage boys for sexual acts while he was the Vatican's top diplomat in the Dominican Republic rocked the Holy See when the story broke two years ago. Wearing a baseball cap low over his head, he allegedly trawled the promenade in Santo Domingo for victims among the shoeshine boys

theguardian/world/2015/jul/10/first-vatican-child-abuse-trial-former-nuncio-jozef-wesolowski-dock

Although a certain proportion of such allegations have always been false, the increase in and media focus on allegations of historic child abuse in English-speaking countries (called the post-Savile spike) has led to a huge increase with (according to defence lawyers) a disproportionate number of false allegations, brought by attention-seekers, the mentally ill or malicious and people wanting compensation. This case is rather different though - it all started of because of concerns from his colleagues within the church.

The child pornography charges (which happened while he was in the Vatican) is a bit of a smoking gun. In the the UK, that crime is easier to commit than you think - anyone with a copy of The Sun from the 1980s in their attic or lining a drawer is guilty of possessing it if there's a 17 year old page 3 girl, and 'downloading' doesn't actually mean that - it can just be a thumbnail you didn't click on or even scroll down to. But not in The Vatican - there it does presumably mean he downloaded stuff.

Although there really is a vile witch hunt in some countries at the moment, with the worst kinds of opportunists fabricating stories, especially against celebrities, knowing they can get attention from it as well as compensation from the government even if no charges are brought. The 'victims' or 'survivors' lobby groups are rabid and aggressive, the internet is full of fantasy about famous people and some of the symptoms of the current Moral Panic (the so-called 'Holly's Army' and the false accusations of ritual abuse in Hampstead)) are bizarre. This case however doesn't seem to be like that.

We should not uncritically accept an allegation as true (though this now happens in some countries - in Britain and Australia the official government policy since 2013 is that all complainants "will be believed") nor should we convict without witnesses or forensic evidence (ditto). In this case, I only hope that justice is seen to be done, whether the allegations are true or false. If he's innocent, he should be cleared, and if he's guilty he should be punished. His job should not have a bearing on this.

Vatican officials should have raced to the Dominican Republic and publicly declared their concerns as soon as the rumours about Wesołowski emerged.
"It should have begged people who may have suffered to go to the police or prosecutors," he said. "In Poland, a similar public plea should have been made. Had that happened, Wesołowski would likely be in prison now and more of his victims would have broken their silence."

Travel / Buying Zlotys in Poland (4-week holiday - Lublin/Zamosc) [19]

In Poznan, most of the cantors except the airport and railway station should be fine. Generally the ones in shopping centres and major touristy bits also don't give the best rate - a typical good cantor is a small shop on a shopping street or in a residential bit. Good luck.

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

Please quote me referring a confederate symbol

Don't be so obtuse...

the said flag, confederate, is NOT part of said know state, local federal government symbol. It's just some flag on a flag pole that should have been taken down long ago.The fact that its symbolism is tied to a time that America would rather forget than remember.

Yep.

selected parts of history

History? They're still flying it, you can still buy it, hate groups proudly use it.

America has a flag already - one with a far better history, present and probably future.

News / Afera taśmowa (recordings scandal) in Poland - media coverage [17]

The "story" is pretty much a non-story.

Very much a non-story. And the 'tapes' should never have been made, let alone released. A private conversation is a private conversation. Imagine what would come out if some of the PiS flappers were bugged!

Hopefully all involved will be harshly punished...

News / Heil-Hitlering Korwin-Mikke in European Parliament [29]

Do you think someone pays him to be so?

If yes, then they're certainly getting value for money!

The systems are getting there, but it still needs a kick so that there's one single common European booking system.

Yes. Once, long long ago, the UK didn't have single ticketing and people used to have to buy a new ticket whenever they changed trains onto a different company's tracks. It isn't unreasonable to be able to do this across Europe, especially now we've got shot of most of the borders...

Good that they've apologised for him. Poland doesn't do that very often:

The Associated Press reported that Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna apologized for Korwin-Mikke's "performance," saying, "we all are ashamed of such behavior."

The Polish website Inside Poland also criticized the lawmaker: "It could be argued that this is the kind of behavior one might expect from a hooligan. ... Korwin-Mikke's behavior shows him to be a man without a shred of dignity or respect for his country, and a politician whose thirst for publicity far outweighs any sense of patriotism that he claims to feel for Poland."

His salute maybe in bad taste but his words about the " one " are very true

One type of train ticket is a much better idea than the present mess, where if you're in Warsaw you can't online book a ticket through to Prague because the systems are different!

When Korwin-Muck starts doing Hitler salutes in parliament because of sorting out problems with rail tickets, it does show what a clown, oaf, booby, jerk etc he is.

(he's one of the best bridge players in Poland)

Yes, JKM used to show up sometimes at the open table at the Bristol on Monday nights. That bloody version of Italian Blue Club that they like instead of Acol :-(

He absolutely is not being ironic, and never has been. He doesn't have a gram of irony in his whole body. He's totally serious about everything he says.

And this is the sad part. He absolutely believes all that stuff and as he gets older we can expect more and more intemperate comments.
