Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

Dominic you seem hell-bent on deterring anyone from ever coming to Poland. In thread after thread after thread her, as if it was your life's mission. You don't even live in this continent! A form of trolling really; and I note that you have admitted that you troll websites.

People's lives and personal circumstances are different and people choose their jobs for different reasons. Not everyone is a nakedly ambitious careerist - in fact most people aren't.

By the way, Katowice isn't that bad - it's an industrial city as many are, and it has a lot of good points.

To the lady who asked, 6500zl is a little above the average salary in Katowice - many couples get by on not much more than half that, however an apartment will cost 1500 to 2000zl.

Life / Passport Photo Booth - Warsaw [15]

25/30 zlotych is cheap, however if you want it even cheaper, try the tunnels under the railway station - galleria poludniowa to be exact. If you need it cheaper still there's a booth in the main concourse.

Better to use a studio than a booth - there are some bizarre rules in PL about showing ears etc.

Law / Thinking of opening up a Greek restaurant in Poland, bad idea or good? Jenkei [45]

King Kebab in particular (I've never eaten there) is doing a roaring trade - big brightly lit shops, easy menu, carefully chosen locations. Amrit is a little classier with more tables and very good food (but crap service). I suspect they've put some of the smaller ones out of business.

As youngish people start to go to bars more rather than drinking at home, kebab shops on busy streets near bars could be a growth area. You are right though - there are lots of little ones (there used to be 10 identical plastic kebab caring in front of Lodz station none of them with customers) which don't make much money.

In my opinion there are far too many kebab places in the bigger cities already

Yes there are a lot of crap ones although I'd say the at the better ones with bigger premises, better locations and better menus (in Warsaw anyway) have long queues.

Unless you are doing something exceptional with the kebabs that nobody else does

Have a look at King Kebab (a chain) or Amrit (bigger premises, excellent food) next time you're in Warsaw - they are doing exceptionally well.

UK, Ireland / Polish community in the UK: are you happy? [46]

If I went to work in America or Australia only for money, but missed my English community and my family, I would have to weigh up which of the two were more important to me.

I think that's the dilemma they have. Also remember that some of the Poles who came to the UK are sophisticated urbanites; but most are not - this creates the kind of expat bubble that can happen wherever people feel they must retreat into their comfort zone.

Money isn't everything and if I were unhappy I wouldn't be there.

Many come from rural places places where they really did have nothing, no future, a crap present and a quid in their pocket.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

Here's a nice article. It's in Polish so I'll summarise. It's basically saying how much the Citizens' Platform and the economist Petru could and should work together towards common goals.

tomaszlis.natemat.pl/148169,platforma-potrzebuje-petru-i-odwrotnie

The article ends:

Patriotyzm, logika i matematyka mówią to samo. Platforma Obywatelska i Nowoczesna.pl muszą iść do wyborów razem. Tylko razem mogą je wygrać. Oddzielnie przegrają obie. Wygra PiS, przegra Polska.

meaning:

Patriotism, logic and maths say the same thing. Citizens' Platform and Nowoczesna.pl must go into the election together. Only together can they win. Separately both will lose. If PiS wins, Poland loses.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

Since about 55% of eligible voters are likely to vote that would be about 49% of the above.mentioned 90% of the nation. The overwhelming majority of them are expected to vote for PiS who are likely to win 38-40% of the vote.

Crapola. Worth remembering how you were heavily criticised in that online rag you write for over in America for spreading the same sort of nonsense. None of it reflects reality; it's just an unconvincing attempt at bad propaganda.

I am Azeem living in Dubai last ten years and now want to open fast food restaurant in Poznan city poland ... please advice me is this god idea or not ??? my mail add. is azeemnaz1@yahoo

It's a great idea - there's a big market for fast foods in Polish cities. especially good kebabs. One very important thing though is to find exactly the right premises and have plenty of start-up money. There are also Subway franchises available, however these are less popular than kebabs.

Life / Imagine a man killing 15 students in Poland. Would Polish flag be removed? [26]

any Poles, for that matter ANYbody killed, solely because of who aka "what" they were or represented, in the name of the present Polish flag??

Bingo. The Polish flag is not used as a sign of hostility and has not been so used within living memory or for well over a century before that. As a battle flag it has for over two Centuries been used only in the defence of freedom - not to oppress. Whereas the flag of the very short lived and fortunately defeated 'confederate' regime is used even today as a tawdry emblem by those who supported segregation and their heirs.

the Catholic nad patriotic IV RP!

Aside from being a treasonous suggestion which will go down in the history books as exactly that, it simply won't happen.

corrupt politicians, scam artists, conmen, the shady business sector and those on the take

A perfect definition of the PiS flappers.

The ordinary Pole is defined as what, exactly?

He means ones who agree with him.

the massive increase in the minimum wage, the hugely improved infrastructure and the general positivity found in Poland, then?

This is noticeable and a contrast to the despondency of the brief PiS regime.

The museum was planned long before that and if you mean the parade, it happened anyway and his so-called 'ban' was ruled illegal, like so much else the silly old booby tried to do.

The Citizens' Platform however have been a success in Warsaw and in Poland.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

The best Mayor we've ever had in Warsaw. She and her PO colleagues have certainly improved the traffic round plac Wilsona and is clamping down or poor parking. The national joke Lech Kaczynski just huffed and puffed about brothels and bars but actually did nothing.

Most likely one of her PO cronies or his brother-in-law has made a killing by coincidnetally (?!) winning the tender to manufacture

I'll perhaps pass that to her lawyers. Remember, in your line of 'work' you aren't exactly anonymous.

And last I heard she still hasn't removed that hideous rainbow eyesore desecrating Our Saviour Square.

Maybe the armed attack dogs you pretended were there in the article you wrote won't let her.

You may not like the Citizens' Platform for your own odd reasons, however they've been the best government we've had in Warsaw since the 1930s. She's a little too right-wing for my tastes, however she does a very good job on the whole and she's survived everything that the PiS flappers have thrown at her.

Law / Hot dog in hot car in Poland - illegal to break glass? [9]

I would break the glass for sure

Me too. Does the concept of justification exist in Polish law? It does sometimes in English law but probably not to save a dog. Instead the person would just get a caution that doesn't count as a criminal record or they'd be bound over to keep the peace - much the same. The owner of the dog would be fined or even jailed.

Law / Hot dog in hot car in Poland - illegal to break glass? [9]

My dog often goes in the clients' office with me. If the client isn't happy with that, I find other clients :)

Mine used to come to my office every day. About breaking the glass, I'm pretty sure you can't however unless the doggie was expiring I'd just phone the police and say there's a crime being committed. Or break the glass anyway and sod the consequences.

And the client finds other and better service giver :-)

Maybe there aren't any. In his line of work there are excellent ones and bad ones with not much in between.

Bar stewards?

Very eloquent of you,

What has that got to do with anything.

Many don't in a city (remember we were neighbours and I never used one then) and this has to be the priority of any government - the improvements in public transport under the Citizens' Platform contrast strongly with the PiS flappers whose only changes either when either in local or central government were to mess up the ticketing in Warsaw and to ban alcohol from railway restaurant cars!

Listen to the researchers, doctors, scientists. And btw, these are microscopic clusters of cells - how can they

suffer pain

That doesn't make sense, nor does your ridiculous and unscientific pretence that clusters of cells are 'children'.

Great that the Polish government doesn't share your point of view.

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

there are enough conservative minded people within PO to agree some sort of programme with PiS. It's the problem that PO have - many of the PO backbenchers are more conservative than the leaders would like to admit.

It's essentially a conservative party -together with PSL they've been very sound stewards of the economy.

Your argument hinges on that, I'm just running with the ball you lopped in your own goal

What argument? It isn't some sort of debating society. These are cold hard facts that people have to live with not half-baked Jesuitical rhetoric about you pretending people move at the drop of a hat on election day...

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

But the voters seem to have figured out that Kukiz has no real ideas.

Let's hope it stays that way.

PO won 41.5%, the biggest win in the history of the III RP. The final result meant that something like 68% of voters were against PiS.

Unprecedented since democracy was reintroduced - I remember the atmosphere at the time; people were partying in the streets when JK grudgingly acknowledged defeat!

its years since Po had that landslide you claim, why didnt the majority come back home to poland

That's one of the silliest things I've ever read here - and there's a lot of competition. Do you know many people who change their whole lives every couple of years when a government gets voted out?

if the emigrants only just left, there could be no groundswell against PiS or they'd have hung around for Po

That's actually quite funny...

I take it btw civic platform had a landslide majority after the PiS up you mention

Yes - and a big turnout.

Following that, masses of polish migrants must have flocked home to poland with relief at Po's return to the wheel, right?

Why would that happen - most people had only just left.

surely that would be the only outcome of such a supposed terrible administration

What are you smoking? The outcome was to dump them with a massive turnout and party for days afterwards.

Fun to watch the number one PiS flapper prime minister being bundled out of the back door of Lancaster House to avoid the angry crowds of London Poles in the street outside.

morals and dont kill unborn children

There you go, introducing your point of view - one not shared by the majority who have no issues with IVF (which helps people have children, not kill them).

big pharma

Oh dear - a conspiracy eh?

Great that the Polish government have ratified that it is legal and acceptable.

More a groundswell of ordinary people who turned out to vote because they didn't want a 'government' whose main policy was, according to their discredited party leader "teraz kurwa my" - "now it's our f*cking turn" (for corruption).

You know something's rotten when the coalition party's leader hangs himself in his office...

Exceptions to the rule. IVF is more accepted and recognised. Interesting your 'example' comes from a place with religious taboos about modern medical treatment.

Anyway, nobody's forcing you to have IVF - you just go right ahead and use your 'alternative therapy' method from Ireland.

but I never met one person who agrees on that take of yours,

You probably meet the wrong people. They were roundly hated. If you want to think it's a 'take' of mine - well, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, however odd - the election that booted them out had a massive landslide victory.

Bit like expecting the Mirror to tell everyone to vote Tory innit

Or the biased Daily Star telling people to vote for the Tories.

Were you in Poland when they briefly held office? An unmitigated disaster and they were thrown out mid term by a massive voting turnout...

I bought some white grapes there on promo special offer, needless (but not seedless) to say they're mega cr&p and sourest ever.

You do have to choose carefully when you buy - they aren't laser printed to a pattern.

IVF and Napro

Read up about it. And yes, the geographic prevalence reflects local religious taboos. Which is why IVF is strongly favoured over hocus pocus.

A bit more than a 'pro-forma' change, though interesting that you criticise them for not eliminating drugs overnight. Not even Nancy 'just say no' Reagan could do that or indeed the whole DEA.

Symptomatic of the foolish rhetoric of the PiS flappers - yelling at others and finding spurious criticisms against political rivals who try to make a difference whereas they achieved a big fat zero.
