Work / What is deducted from a salary in Poland apart from Income tax? [155]

Or he can decline the transfer without quitting, which is what I suggest he does, and work actively on finding a better job in a richer country.

Perhaps he wants to stay with his company and sees it as a career. You know, the long view. Perhaps it's a chance he never imagined he'd get. Perhaps it's a job he loves. Maybe a golden opportunity. Don't be so negative!

Work / First English teaching job in Poland (Katowice) [75]

which are crawling with British and Irish backpackers, slackers and horny alcoholics giving lessons for as low as 20 PLN,

I've only met one person who fits those categories and he was Canadian or American or something similar. Polish name and spoke some of the language after a fashion. People like that can offer lessons, sometimes get them but can rarely keep them.

In smaller towns though, although a teacher can't usually charge as much, they have less competition - I know someone (British, and a first class teacher) who absolutely cleared up in one. In larger towns, provided they take only adult pupils, they find that they're teaching someone who has had lessons before, both good and bad.

In Katowice the OP would find this - a lot of adults there have had a lot of lessons before, in this smaller town, chances are that he won't.

If the OP would like to email me, I'd be happy to point him towards an at least half decent school that's good for a new teacher.

BTW, how many hours teaching per week do they expect for the money?

News / If Poland were in the Eurozone... [39]

North. Poland might have been even more tough on Greece than Wolfgang was.

Yes. Poland's done the austerity thing already and like the Presidents of Latvia and Lithuania, it would be hard to justify bailing out a country with higher pensions, income etc.

Some people do! Pretty difficult though and I've never been able to do that sort of thing. One would need to be parsimonious in the extreme - and believe me, some people including expats in Poland are like that, serial tea bag reusers and never buy a round of drinks or willingly order a cab if they can share one to the annoyance of others. Half that amount is a more reasonable figure and that would still involve being more careful than I would personally like to.

I suppose it depends on what you're used to and whether you go out to eat, buy wine or use taxis.

Language / Dopalacze meaning? A designer or booster drug? [4]

Legal High is the English language term, even though many are sadly not now legal. 'Designer Drug' is rather specific and this 'booster' thing has a whiff of continental Europe about it.

Work / First English teaching job in Poland (Katowice) [75]

Providing he gets a flat and not just a room in a shared flat, 1800 is about what would be left from a language school out in the sticks.

But yes, there are much better options in Poland and elsewhere. Even in Katowice.

I get the impression from his original post that he's an EFL newby - in which case International House 9the South West Poland franchise holder) has a decent reputation and do fairly decent career development (essential really unless he just wants to pick up bad habits from the start). Not a great payer either, but decent on the CV.

A 'method' school, no. Just no.

The company I worked for sometimes used to send people to factory contracts in these little towns. They generally cleared up on private lessons since there were no other teachers for miles around and frankly there wasn't anything else to do...

much, much better opportunities elsewhere

Dominic, do pay attention to the thread, there's a good boy.

The gentleman isn't looking for a job, he is being transferred to Poland by his employer. Of course you're free to suggest he quits his company for a 'much, much better opportunity' however he can doubtless make his own mind up as to whether or not he wishes to resign.

In smaller towns, are there many amenities (there is a gym, which I'll be signing up for, but are there cinemas/bars/restaurants?)

Restaurants after a fashion. Bars likewise, cinemas usually no. If it's Bielsko Biala (lots of EFL jobs there for some reason) there are cinemas and a few decent places to eat. Bars in Poland aren't usually chatty though - people go out in small groups and sit in a huddle avoiding strangers.

- What is the public transport like from small towns to Katowice? Do they have buses? The train network any good?

Usually OK. Trains best, but if you PM me, I can tell you more.

- What sort of lifestyle can you have out in a small town with 1800 a month? Is it going to be back to the old student days?

If accommodation is included you can live reasonably well (and in fact better than most people out in the sticks) - certainly not back to student days. Don't expect to save though, although you WILL be approached for private lessons which will give you a bit more.

- Will there be many English speakers, other than at the school? Would it be ideal to pre-learn some Polish?

Very few English speakers and most of them older and probably rather posh, or young people. Learn the numbers and memorise some phrases before you come and (this is most important) use those phrases from day one and don't be afraid to make terrible mistakes (as Poles speaking English ALWAYS do) - this is how to learn.

- What are the students/staff generally like?

Anybody's guess, however if it really is a small town, probably lacking in life experiences (though since they're paying for English lessons, these will be the better off. Not always nice, but you may be lucky. As for the staff, who knows?

- Is there much to do in Katowice? Is there an expat community?

Yes and yes. A big industrial conurbation. Some nice bars in the pre-war bits up the hill behind the station. Not exactly a party city though.

1. Can you please tell me what will be my in hand salary per month

Around 6300

2. Will the in hand salary be enough for a couple to stay happily and go for some occasional euro trips and save

Yes, provided you live fairly modestly this is possible.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

ARREST WOMAN, 58,

Is that in Poland? A link or it didn't happen. Not that it's even half interesting or relevant to human rights...

i love vagina privately and don`t scream on the street about it.

Do you 'scream on the street' about much?

This is all getting so confusing.

Why would you need to 'understand' other people's private lives?

This is all getting so confusing.

I suspect you're used to that...

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

Exactly. Watch how the antis try to twist things. And lose anyway. We should never forget that the same crowd never wanted it to be legal in th first place or that there are those (including in Poland) who would love to see it criminalised or at least severely restricted even now. Those denizens of the shadows who oppose equality.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

The US Army chaplains demoted for opposing same-sex marriage and the bakery put out of business by LGBT goons have already been reported on PF.

None of those are 'deprived of their livelihoods' - they have made a choice.

Rod Dreher of the American Conservativ

So yet another quote from a right-wing lobby group. Part of our rather long (against forum rules - ultra-conservatives only follow rules and laws if they get their own way) unattributed cut 'n paste.

inotlerant, insecure nad bigoted than the LGBT operativres depriving people of their livelihood

Rubbish. Nobody has been 'deprived of their livelihoods' because of this issue, although the odious Jaro Kaczynski did try to exclude LGBT people from certain professions. Fortunately human rights are respected in Poland and this was struck down by Presidential veto. Even if it hadn't been, the EU would have done the job.

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

She doesn't want to teach. Do you even know which post this is about? Hint: Post number 60.

Hint, post number 60 doesn't specify what sort of job - look at the thread title she posts in for clues - hint hint

And many would rather be caught dead than coming in contact with fellow wives of the wrong sort. For Korean's, that means the wife of a subordinate of the husband. For Indians, it means just about any other woman.

What makes you think that most of the members are Indians or the wives of office monkeys from Korea or elsewhere...

What would EVER make you think that anyone should drag their sorry butox halfway across the globe to find happiness in ....... wait for it ...... Poland?

What would EVER make you think the lady is a. from 'half way across the globe' or b. the same sort of person as you...

You do realize that by far the bulk of these posters have never even looked for a job, but are simply responding to a randomly sent recruiting letter? And that this is almost certainly the case with the OP.

You assume far, far too much here - basically for your trolling purposes...

Again, this isn't an EFL discussion.

Again, look at the title of the thread the lady has posted in...

Interesting that just about the only posts you make here are obsessively trying to deter anyone from coming to Poland, and trying to suggest that they should become office monkeys somewhere else, or do 'math' (sic) based studies, regardless of what their strengths or tastes are. You must have had a pretty bad time here.

OK.....everyone back on topic

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

@Jon: I know about those women's associations in Warsaw but no everybody can fit in such circles ;)

Very true,

, still underdeveloped (need to leave the 2 or 3 streets in "downtown" area and the new shopping mall at the new PKP station), the pollution is awful.

I really like the part of town uphill from the station. Some really nice pre-war architecture and a few nice bars (but lots of rough ones).

ending up in a place like Katowice seems even cruel ;).

Yes - for someone from a nice cathedral city etc it could be a culture shock ;-)

Nevertheless for one year or two, it could be good. For an EFL teaching career, Katowice could be a good place to start.

A lot of nice people, too.

Classifieds / Flat in Krakow for German students for one semester [24]

So why not first of all asking the school? I am sure they assist foreign students especially not only because of the language barrier and also because not easy to rent for such a short period

I'm sure they must have some support about this. Although I'm prepared to believe anything.

Life / Passport Photo Booth - Warsaw [15]

"Photo Lab"

Maybe Foto Joker?

Both companies exist.

If you need it for an overseas document, be wary. They have the rules for (say) British passports, however they don't follow them - they have very fixed ideas about what is acceptable and in any case their information is often out of date.

I strongly recommend the one under the station (the bit near the cash machines on the way to the Marriott). they're cheap and OK.

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

They are very, very safe assumptions. So safe that they are practically a certainty.

Cobblers.

My situation was fundamentally different.

How can you say that when you don't know their reasons for wanting to teach in Poland?

@Dominic: even in Warsaw, expats' wives (and also husbands when their wives work and they don't) can be bored to death

Many find the International Womens' Group (based at the LIM centre) to be a great way to spend time.

That bugs me a lot, too. Even from a financial perspective, earnings are much less important than savings potential in absolute dollars. Quality of life is important, too. Why anyone would even contemplate moving halfway across the planet to work for a measly $21,000 a year without the ability to save more than a token amount in a grimy, depressing industrial hell-hole is beyond me.

Most important of all is happiness.

Dominic, has it never occured to you that many people considering Poland simply won't get such jobs?

Quite. As I've said before, there are a lot more jobs in the post room than in the board room.

Classifieds / Flat in Krakow for German students for one semester [24]

Yes, and this is good. There's also the usual agents' tricks like saying there's a scarcity, prices are rising, you have to decide now or this flat will be lost and that there are other offers when there are none.

Some of the ones in Poland even have stooges turn up during a viewing to pretend they'r interested and want to make an offer!

Black market for apartments? Bribery?

No bribery but some pretty rapacious letting agents. People I wouldn't enjoy dealing with and young students would be easy prey.

Law / Thinking of opening up a Greek restaurant in Poland, bad idea or good? Jenkei [45]

Definitely not.

I disagree - the market is now consolidating in the larger cities. The little stands are going and the better shops are growing.

I'm sure the OP is not naive about the risks of the food business. Incidentally (this is not a criticism of yourself) you say gastronomy. I always find it irritating when Poles say they work in 'gastronomia' when they actually mean hot dogs or kebabs or bigos!

Lyzko is right. His advice is good.

I'd add that if the OP's university has left these very young people to sort this out themselves then either they must work on a principle of Social Darwinism or more probably it's an example of how things work differently in Eastern Europe and in Germany.

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

Pretty much irrelevant, as the rules for native Poles are a lot different than the rules for foreigners relocating to Poland. 6500 PLN may be good for the former, but lousy for the latter, as in this case.

Don't assume that they are looking for an expat life.

Most people who come to Poland to work in serious jobs are primarily concerned about earnings and savings.

Again, don't assume.

he OP is not a backpacker/slacker who is looking for "adventure"

Not everyone who looks for change and interesting experiences is a "backpacker/slacker".

You also forget that I lived for twelve years in Poland, and just returned to the US last year.

Yet you try your damndest to deter others from doing the same.

then they have failed miserably in exploring the many much better opportunities that exist in richer countries. Chances are that the OP has not explored at all, but is just responding to a random recruitment email.

So many assumptions about the OP.
