Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

Very good point, BevK. They come to expect certain behaviour from you and they are more understanding when you put down a note as they know you usually don't.

If they aren't willing to budge then they have to accept small losses. Trevek should never have had to use his card there. They should have waivered the extra groszy cost out of convenience.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

There are many hard thinkers in Poland, concentration is important. However, if Komorowski gets in, I think a concentration camp will seem like a good idea.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

It's interesting that Hamby, the CEO of the company behind TAWS in Tucson (Arizona), refused to comment. He likely didn't want to become embroiled in a bitter dispute.

More support for the official line would be needless Polish bravado. I see it in many places and it's pretty humorous. Deadly in this case.

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

Interesting to see the Poles defending this. I think you have to have lived in other countries to see it, it's noticeable. I make a point of giving the exact change but many Poles just throw a note and a frown down. They like me for that, that I always try and help. However, I still get the humphs and grumphs from them when I put a note down as that's all I have.

The lack of cooperation is quite incredible. A defiant NIE on both sides is a far cry from compromise. They are forever ping-ponging back and forth in the 2 shops out front.

Oh, and don't get me started about old people that start ordering halfway through your order. I felt like physically escorting an old hag out today for doing that. Now come in and try again, LOL :)

News / Unbelievable but, its truth. Poland is finally happy to share border with Russia [57]

Sorry, that didn't explain it well enough to me :( What beliefs are different? What is the ethos of each?

But religion cannot apply when convenient and be ignored when not.

Well, true, but Croatians are Catholic so that ups the numbers. Again, you haven't drawn the demarcation/dichotomy between the 2 religions. To me, I just see Christians.

Torq, what is the essential difference between Orthodox and RC to you? Can't you just say they are both Christians? I mean, look at Poland's relationship with Latvia and then with Lithuania. Latvia is FAR less Catholic than Lithuania but Poles seem to feel better in Latvia. There is strife with Lithuania.

Religion should not be a divider, esp given that the essence of the belief is the same. Let the finer details be thrashed out by theologians.

Convex, safety culture?? Why even talk of it given their natural primal instinct for self preservation? He wasn't suicidal, how many times do I have to make that point? How stupid can some proponents of the official line be? The guy who did that plane documentary on 9/11 (Dave Von Klein??) said it very well. Pure denial results in a defending of a position to the hilt, regardless of merit or logic.

However, I am prepared to say that there is callous disregard in some. Just look at road accidents here in Poland. It's like they have a subconscious wish to die.

News / Unbelievable but, its truth. Poland is finally happy to share border with Russia [57]

Crow, I'd wait until Russia finally clears up the Smolensk incident before commenting. 2/3 of Poles are suspicious of the official story. Also, be mindful of how quickly the Russian government changes their tune. Under Medvedev's watch, they threatened to strike the proposed missile shield which is direct hostility given that Poland offered Russian inspectors to come and check it out. Then we see the same man come across and attend LK's funeral, risking a hazard through ash. I know you love the whole Slavic aspect but they are affected by Asian ideas, being a Eurasian country. Kao in Japanese means face and my friend told me that the Chinese also value it too through adherents of Confucianism. They will maintain their public face but do devious and underhand things behind the scenes. Russia has provoked Scotland with flying their MIG planes over our territory. We have no idea what they were trying to achieve by doing so. We have a strong airforce so they had better think twice about repeating that stunt.

Beware of false hope, Crow, that's my point. On an intergovernmental level, the relationship is healthier. However, I see you as being more of a people person, valuing the word on the street, right? Poles and Russians need copious amounts of vodka to drop their guard and find common ground. Poles are very much their own people.

Love / Sigh... Polish girls have such pretty eyes. [51]

In a business sense, Korean companies have a good reputation. It is hard to take most Polish women away from their own due to the comfort factor but it's like a market. You see what you like and you go for it. You are in with a real shout as more and more Poles are beginning to look outwards. Maybe I'm being optimistic as I'm a broad-minded person (I enjoyed Itaewon in Seoul btw) but you just need to come across the one for you.

As a final comment, we are all victims in the rat race. If people were to tell themselves that they actually had more time then it would be easier to make contacts rather than people scurrying around and not giving a toss about others.

Life / What is the Cheapest way to send money FROM POLAND to INDIA ? [23]

I think Western Union operate only to Britain though I could be wrong. Some banks have such options. Sometimes it's not a matter of cheapest but more of having an option in the first place.

I know CHAPS, a branch of Nationwide Building Society in Britain, offer a service but I will warn you by saying that transfers can take up to 3 months to get to final destination, i.e India. India is somehow a special case in their transfer system, maybe it's due to clearance issues on the Indian side??

Poland is bound to have sth similar. Ask at the bank. Some postal orders are available but sb must sign for them at the other end and is a risky means of transfer. The banks may take a fair cut but if you opt for a standard transfer then there is a greater chance that your money will reach home.

I hope that helped, albeit in a small way.

Or those that were alleged to have been drunk at ATC? LOL. They skipped their compulsory medical.

Everyone can have a MLOR but Protasiuk was a calm guy and one that knew his trade. If amateurs here are commenting that 100m is the threshold then he for sure would have known. It is quite clear to me that distorted readings were being fed to him. He had landed Tusk just 3 days earlier.

When is the next instalment of 'data'? Those transcripts were awful and raised more questions than they answered.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

Ah, but if you don't have those options here then you settle for what you can get. I won't be buying the sushi as my wife does an excellent job of making it :)

The curries will be well worth buying. Poland really could do with more curry places but I've found that all the foreign places have gone under here. Poles tend to stick with what they know or maybe it is that Gliwice is overly conservative when it comes to tastes.

I'm the opposite when back home. I tend to go for foreign foods and not Scottish offerings.

Yeah, there are many poor substitutes. I guess it would be like some British companies trying to make Polish bread for the first time.

There is sushi if you like, frd. It's all translated into Polish. The sauces are particularly good. Nasi Goreng is great but Tesco have that.
