Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

Just checking :)

Hey, think of sth more difficult.

E.g., why Bridge of Sighs but the Golden Gate Bridge?

Ok The World War II

Seanus is playing tricks on you. Both are correct.

Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

Pawian, you are a teacher. In all your years of teaching, have you ever run into difficulties when teaching articles?

Articles are one of major grammar problems that Polish students run into. In written and spoken utterances, missing articles make about 50% of most blatant mistakes. Only really brilliant students use them correctly.

Pawian is a history teacher :)

Yes.

History / Polish martyrology during WW2 - today`s monuments [54]

Those are beautiful images Pawian.

Beautiful but depressing. Whenever I look through these photos, I get shivers.

Warsaw, still:

This plaque is my guidance in life with its simple message - never give up.

During the Warsaw Rising 1944, soldiers from the batallion Gustaw fought till the end, blocked the strategic route, repelled all German attacks, covered the sewer evacuation of insurgent troops to another district.

A plaque on the Cathedral of St. John - in honour of all insurgent soldiers from Róg (Horn) Unit killed during the 1944 Rising.

A part of the track of the mobile explosive carrier which was used by Germans to blow up the wall of the Cathedral.

A barricade was built up in this place

A Monument to Little Insurgents

A memory stone to honour the place where an explosion of a trap tank killed about 500 people.

Love / Do Polish women fight about everything? [39]

I know some of Polish women and others do fight for no reason.

You need to relax and stop being so obsessed with Polish women. :):):)

Looks like older model of Warszawa, but it could be Pobeda or simply an American car, because Pobedas and Warszawas were copies of old American cars.

Yes, this is a Soviet Pobieda.

Life / Polish interment practices...cemetary burial. [17]

especially if older graves were not "kept up". The folks I asked about this in Poland did not seem to have a ready answer, even in one mortuary establishment!

Yes, if a family doesn`t pay a fee every 20 years or so, the old grave is emptied and a new lodger is brought.

We will also check out public playgrounds in Wrocław. In Warsaw and Krakow there are nice ones, in Poznań pathetic.

The first pic is a Pilatus 32e on the ground with a Polish Pzl 13 flying in the air....

You missed the third and fourth plane in that picture.

The second pic is an Antonov an2 ( Antec ) a Russian design made under licence in Poland....

You missed the fact that Antonov is taking care of its baby.

The third pic is Monika....a really nice girl from Radom...

Not Monika but Jessica and not from Radom but from Krakow.

The fourth pic.... don,t know this one.... i only eat bread and cheese and of course beans at my house..... but its some sort of food.....

Do you drink black coffee to it to?

A kit car powered by a Honda fireblade bike engine.....

The plates say this:

It is one topic that I have no idea about and I proudly admit it: I know nothing about kit cars. :):):)

My instincts tell me this is a trap based on the question alone and I should say no :)
And although it is a classic looking car it is not stereotypically classical looking, so again I would say no.

Sean, no traps. I have been drinking for a few hours now and whenever I am drunk, I am dead serious. Stop those soliloquies of yours, will you?

So, is this facking fiber too?:

My brother used to make up similar cars, mounting corsa engines with fibreglass bodies similar to that.

Is it fiberglass too?:

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

for anyone doing a war tour of wroclaw you really need a few hours and no kids.

Don`t worry. I have done war tours around Warsaw and Poznan, let alone Krakow, with kids. They complained but survived. :):):)

What could be a sadder sight than a tiger in a cage, save it be a forest monkey climbing dispairingly up a barked stump, or an eagle chained to its roost?

Des, don`t be such a cliche fanatic of animal liberation movement. Zoos are also places where endangered species are bred and preserved.

the botanical gardens was always one of my favorites as well.

Are they really worth seeing? When we tour major cities, we always visit botanical gardens.

in all honesty, Hala Ludowa isn't the most exciting place

I am afraid so.

I would also like to visit places which are somehow connected with the Siege of Breslau in 1945. Are there any ruined buildings which have been preserved till today, like the ruins of Bank Polski in Warsaw were preserved after Warsaw Uprising?

Going through Wrocław, we drove past the Red Army Cemetery, with two cannons guarding it. I would like to see it, too.

Yep, especially as you can now get a joint ticket for both the Zoo and the Aquapark - 99zl for the family.

Wow, thanks.

Centennial Hall
Hala Ludowa
Hala stulecia
These are all the same place.

Will it be interesting to children?

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

Centennial Hall, Wroclaw Town Hall and Rynek, White Stork Synagogue and Old Jewish Cemetery, St. Elisabeth's Church, Wroclaw Palace, Szczytnicki Park, National Museum, Raclawice Panorama Rotunda, University of Wroclaw, Wroclaw Cathedral and Ostrow Tumski...

I am thinking of going to Wrocłąw this year, too. Never been there.

I would also add the zoo to the list, if anybody travels with kids.

I started collecting useful info on sightseeing opportunities. Why not share it here, everybody?

Battle at Racławice Panorama site in English: panoramaraclawicka.pl/en/when_to_visit.html

Tickets are not cheap but they allow you to visit two other interesting museums: National and Etnographic.

Life / Driving across Poland (zigzag style) [15]

An odd practice on Poliand's 2-lane highways is an added half-lane.

It is a Polish style motorway. Used with common sense, is as good as regular highway.

History / Teaching our kids about Poland's History [57]

I teach my kids about history of Poland. I tell them how Poles, due to their stupidity and negligence and lack of patriotism eventually greatly contributed to partitions, i.e., losing their country for 123 years.

News / What must be done to improve politics in Poland? [72]

I think that there should be control of citizen over taxation process.

Nothing new. Over 200 years ago a few savages, politically correctly called Indians then, today called native Americans, started a rebellion because of unfair taxation. As far as I remember, they protested against high taxes on eagle feathers, or something.
