News / Anty-Polish v column is located in White House [88]

Being equally to blame and being partialy to blame are two seperate matters. I have read hundreds of accounts of Poles driving jews from their homes, giving Jews up to the Germans and so on..

collaboration vs wholesale extermination How can you equate the two? Polish Death Camps = wholesale extermination. Surely, that's not what you're saying. Is it?

Rybnik... you must be one hell of a blind Pole not to think that some of the Poles had nothing to do with the Extermination of the Jews.

I think I understand what you mean. Then if I'm right about you, you would agree that the Filipinos are equally to blame for the Bataan Death March. Right?

Wow. Really?! Very ignorant and inflammatory statement. Makes me sad to think there are still to this day people, who think this way. Poles need a media blitz to educate the ignorant (but we know that'll never happen. But it really needs to!)

Life / You've been in Poland a while if .... [49]

you pepper your English with Polish words because the Polish words fit better what you're trying to say.

Poglish! Very effective and economical form of communication ;)

you realize that "Nie, dziękuje." never works at the dinner table.

true that. Poles love to gościć. They were like that in the PRL-days especially during the lean times. They always had plenty for a guest.

you stop trying to explain to people that San Francisco is not very close to San Diego and just say "No, I don't think I remember meeting your cousin."

yep some just can't fathom the distances here in the States.

It is no surprise for me that this eventually has happened

To me this is surprising and disheartening. You would have thought that after all this time, after all the gaffes that preceeded this one, after all the retractions and apologies to the Polish people by other errant world leaders, columnists and pundits, that this error would finally stop being made. What will it take? Maybe if and when Poland is taken seriously, this slip of the tongue will cease. Until then Poland will continue to be treated like USA's maskotka.

Law / Polish Products? Made in Poland? [7]

I need one more product that was made in Poland.

Bolesławiec pottery! I love this stuff. It's actually pricey here in the States.

News / A Second Look at Poland's Future. [21]

True. Poland, I beleive, is in the throes of its own growing pains. The debate must continue from which, hopefully, some answers will emerge.

News / Marion Barry insults Polish people calling them "Polacks" [33]

Just callus Polish not Polack. It's like someone using the n word. You think he would be sensitive to that.

I'm gonna give the ex-mayor a pass and this is why. In my neck of the woods the Poles have co-opted the "p-word" similar to blacks using the n-word. I hear it all the time. Staś asks his black friend "where is that polak Jaś". They call each other "dumb polak", so on and so forth. Unless told otherwise, as our african american brothers have done, non-Poles will assume it's ok and cool to use the offensive word......just a thought

News / A Second Look at Poland's Future. [21]

You can't do anything with a nation that's split over key issues.

so how would you bring people together?

News / A Second Look at Poland's Future. [21]

It's pretty obvious that we're (as a nation) not going in the right direction

What makes you say that? What direction would you see Poland go in?

Language / My struggle learning the Polish language [10]

started learning Polish about 4 years ago and I still don't think I'm much good to be honest.

Great post. Positive, constructive and full of empathy.

Travel / Vacationing in Krakow for a month, how to keep myself occupied? [9]

you really need to get out. Go spend a day in the Jewish quarter (Kazimierz); take a tram and check out Nowa Huta (model Stalinist town). Take a day trip and vist the salt mine in Wieliczka (very very cool - well worth the trip). Don't forget to see Częstochowa!.......That's for starters (I love the Zakopane suggestion).

History / Early 80s - Could just anybody come stroling on in? [11]

I was a student during those years. I remember when martial law first broke the schools were closed and all the students had to return to their hometowns. The foreigners were allowed to stay and wait-it-out. We students were on a student visa and that was enough. We had no "handlers" nor do I recall anything untoward during those 7 years (in spite of our incessant paranoia).

Travel / What do you think about hitchhikers in Poland? [33]

Part of me is envious of his chutzpah. He obviously doesn't care if he is liked or not. As long as he gets to where he is going he is happy. I, myself, am too bogged down in protocol to get what I really want out of life. So, I like him to a point........His not having any money would bother me a lot. I absolutely don't like to sponge off of others. So that part is unlikeable. It's a toss-up.

Life / Polish Film World and Poland Movie Reviews [30]

I think we admire how they seem to honestly want the best for each other. Sure, there's petty, jealous Poles, but they seem to be the exception.

Interesting observation. Not what we usually read around here.

Life / Health system in Poland one of the worst in Europe: report [78]

The degree to which people are affected by mismanagement must be considered and criminal prosecution must be a recourse when someone fails the taxpayers so completely.

what else can the government do, have the incompetent beaurocrat pay back the money? You know that's unlikely.

Life / Poles always ask how much money you earn. Why do they do this? [30]

you're being a little too hard on them. I feel they are asking these questions in an effort to gauge how Polish wages compare with non-Polish wages. During my time back in the 80's, the Poles did the same thing. It's in their nature to be constantly comparing. I'm guilty of the same thing actually to a fault :) I agree though, It is a bit irritating. Try not to get so upset next time. I don't beleive they mean to upset you.

It's just Staś being Staś
