Work / Briton teaching freelance - and the law in Poland [21]

Just £600 before you have to pay tax in Poland? ! My oh my!

but our earnings are about £8000 per year

Isn't the UK increasing it to about £10K from £7K this next tax year? Maybe I misheard on that.

My English isn't brilliant but they say:

Do I have to pay any money to the Polish government even on such low earnings

In 2012 you can earn 3091zl / 5 = £619 (without paying any tax)

Everyone can earn a certain amount each year without paying any Income Tax.
This is called your Personal Allowance. In 2011-12 the Personal Allowance is £7,475

Language / "Pamiętaj o śmierci" Is this correct? [24]

Pamiętaj o śmierci, is more so the original quote to the original phrase

Memento mori is a Latin phrase translated as "Remember your mortality", "Remember you must die" or "Remember you will die"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memento_mori

Pamiętaj o śmierci is fixed phrase

unfortunately chosen

even despite wiki pamietaj że umrzesz (remember you will die) or pamiętaj umrzeć (remember to die) sounds better
than pamiętaj o śmierci

can it be spelled as a title "Pamiętaj O Smierci"?

Pamiętaj o Śmierci

I don't know how to make a capital S with the apostrophe above it

There were ups and downs. You don't want to know how many years I have been learning English for.
Sometimes I think there is a twirl in my brain ;)

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Is Poland a poor country?

Hard to say. Some people doing well. They bought land cheaply or inherited property.
Earnings are about 700 euro but some still earn NMW (about 260 euro). We have everything
new white goods, zillion inches LCDs, laptops. Some people have more than one car and argue about parking place ;)

Unfortunately we don't have aircraft carrier, yet ;)

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

This is probably due to Polish drivers overtaking any English drivers silly enough to stop at a crossing

Most dangerous scenario is when there is jam, all three lanes run slowly eg 40km/h and someone
on the left/right lane decide to stop to let people cross. Drivers in the middle lane think that it is because of jam or red light for turn left.

Drive with the flow

Do what the others do. Don't waste the road when in jam. Everyone wants to jump behind another traffic light.
Not all cities have such nice flow control system like Gdansk or Gdynia some (Olsztyn) have stupid and malicious ;)

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Could you give me some tips for driving in Poland?

Don't stop the car before zebra crossing suddenly. 99% pedestrians are used to wait
even that they have a right of way. Use common sense. We have heavy traffic jams
and pedestrians wait until street pour in and stream stops.

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

Do you have any idea how many households can be serviced by one of these heat exchangers?

Old style group exchangers are able supply heat for up to 4-5 blocks (about 180 flats)
New standalone are small, compact and built in a basement of each block or even house.

Life / Question about hot water in Poland and the use of water heaters? [52]

Is this a common method of heating in Poland?

Yes. Hot water from the plant +100'C comes thru big isolated pipe (50cm) to heat exchangers localized near housing estates. It warms up water in another isolated circuit for radiators +70'C and isolated circuit for domestic hot water +52'C. Big electric pumps continuously move mass of water in radiators. Computer continuously watch for water temp and outdoor temp.

Love / ARE POLISH GIRLS GOLD-DIGGERS? [359]

can anyone tell me if polish girls are materialistic?

no, not all Polish girls are materialistic but their 99% of moms are ;)

if you cant afford to buy house or cars,or not have a good job they will leave u?

Today only minority can afford to buy a house, even flat (in Olsztyn 4350zl/m2) cost a lot of money.
You need to have a house. Inherit not buy and pay now. Car is not a problem you need about 15ooo-25ooo zl.

The third thing a good job. Of course it is better if you have a good job but it is hard to come by in Poland.

Despite that many Polish people decide to get married ;)
