UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

Someone pointing out that Polish cheesecake tastes of cheese.

It is called cheesecake after all (!)

Although the version of cheesecake I am accustomed to (and presumably the poster who made the comment) doesn't actually taste of cheese - it is sweet with a mild creamy texture, but not "cheesy" at all.

To be honest, I think my stomach would do somersaults if I bit into cheesecake that actually tasted cheesy.

Love / Polish girls fall for Indian guys ? [217]

I encountered many muslims when I lived in London and became friendly with quite a few. Very eclectic mix, just like so called christians.

As Jonni says, some were highly critical of Islam, a few could be regarded as a bit more committed, very few were devout, most were part-time vaguely religious.

They were pretty "ordinary" people really.

In fact, considerably more ordinary than many of the specimens of white urban pent-up paranoia I encountered.

History / Christopher Colombowicz: America's discoverer Polish not Portuguese, claim historians [60]

The daily mail are anti EVERYTHING that isn't white, British, aspiring-to-middle-class and conservative.

ALL immigrants and the unemployed are are particular target. The Irish come in for a fair bashing usually too - and this will only get worse in the current climate.

It's an absolute rag.

It's worse than The Sun. It's The Sun without breasts.

I actually wouldn't trust or associate with anyone who buys it as it says a lot about them.

Law / Poland low on national brand chart [66]

Kind of a hero in Ireland among the hard left revolutionary types.

Would have thought he was pretty much known world wide during the whole Solidarity thing though?

Law / Poland low on national brand chart [66]

before i moved to poland, i knew of Zywiec and Belvedere

Before I had been there: Lech Walęsa; coal; cold winters & Copernicus.

That's it.

UK, Ireland / EXCHANGE RATES BETWEEN POLISH ZLOTY AND BRITISH POUND [73]

The countries putting the money in to bailout Ireland, are sure they will get the money back ++.

I live there. I don't know what makes them so sure.

Plenty of talk here about defaulting being inevitable.

UK, Ireland / EXCHANGE RATES BETWEEN POLISH ZLOTY AND BRITISH POUND [73]

"we support the bailout of Ireland, because they have already taken fiscal measures to avoid problems earlier this year, if it comes to bailing out Portugal and Spain, it will be very difficult to get it passed the tax payers in Sweden and at the end of the day it is the taxpayers money"

So they are saying that because Ireland took steps they are deserving of help but Portugal & Spain aren't? I don't pay close attention to Spain & Portugal but surely they have taken measures too?!

Polonia / Ever been to Sweden? [185]

"Slante!"

That would be sláinte.

"Slaanchyeh"

Slawncheh more like.

I think it's merely lack of familiarity on the part of the average anglophone that causes this sense of strangeness re pronunciation.

Polish can be just as odd though - who would have thought that £ódź would be pronounced wooch for example? French too with it's multitude of silent letters for example.

Is Irish similar?

Visually, not at all.

Dia duit agus conas atá tú ?

(Hello and how are you?)

Phonetically: jeea-ditch ogus cunnas ataw too.

Sound wise, a bit. A lot of it is at the back of the throat - which I assume was the Arabic reference. LOL

Do you actually use that language?

Not me anyway. Compulsory to learn at school but only about 10% use it daily - vast majority along the west and south west coast.

Life / How popular is Radio Maryja in Poland? [163]

Pope John Paul II made the point of publicly and pointedly refusing to meet during his final visit to Krakow.

Good for him. Hadn't heard about that.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Polish obsession with firanki

Assuming these are simply curtains, it doesn't seem like a particularly Polish obsession ?!

Practically every house I've been in (with a non-mediteranean climate for example) has them.

Maybe I've got it wrong.

The winter is ahead of us I think

Bloody -5C here in Ireland last night. Don't know what's going on.

Life / How popular is Radio Maryja in Poland? [163]

The very idea of it is crazy to me - but do many people actually listen to it?

And just how bad is it? I gather even most "moderate" catholics regard it as something of an embarassment.

I've never heard the station by the way.

Polonia / Ever been to Sweden? [185]

Swedish/Norwegian/Danish are all fairly similar. Finnish is crazy - looks like phonetic Japanese to me - it's all ikkiantuu & tunniranni.

Something about Finland fascinates me though - more so than other Scandinavian countries. (Although I've nothing against them I should add)

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

Some things are right, some are wrong in my book. Like gays or pedophiles. There can be no compromise with evil.

Jesus.

You couldn't make this up.

Just to be absolutely clear - are these serious posts or are you just trolling?

Food / Stuffed cabbage - gołąbki - recipe [59]

too much pork always lands me a big zit on my right shoulder

Weird! Very ... er... specific condition ?!

pork, if you don't eat a lot of it, has a horrid taste compared to beef.

Both pork and chicken are basically almost tasteless on their own - they need to be prepared with spices/seasonings/sauces etc.

With red meat, you don't need to - unless you really want to.

Do you believe them to be peaceful

The participants? yes, the vast majority.

The agitators/disruptors, those protesting at the protest? no, the vast majority seem to be intent on violence.

Life / Any treatment centres for homos in Poland? [455]

and about half of the people I knew there were in fact not gay at all.

Yes, well worth mentioning.

It was the same for other parades/demos I've been around.

and on a different coast.

Oops. Of course!

Check out the Stonewall Riot on wikipedia!

Will do.

Still, I know that the gays that take part in the parade only represent a small minority of all gay people. In my opinion any healthy society would ban such spectacles.

Yes, but this happens in many demos. Small minority of extremists. If they break the law they should be arrested or the parade banned or whatever - complaining that this doesn't happen in the case of gay parades is churlish, because it doesn't happen with many other parades/activists etc also.

At least gay marches are highly unlikely to turn violent - many other forms of protest do though. yes, people do get arrested - but not always, even when they should be.

Language / Poles - don't fall into the French/Spanish trap re pronunciation/accent! [81]

I pronounce it piĘć and I don'r feel that's sophisticated way of pronouncing it... just proper. The pieńć is just a sloppy way of pronouncing it

Hmmm. Interesting!

Based on what my friend said, I wonder how many poles don't pronounce it properly then?

Surprised, as she is educated, intelligent.
