Travel / My Experience in Poland (compared to Germany) [100]

After spending a over a week in Mragowo and Warsaw and briefly seeing some other towns like Olsztyn

You come to such sweeping conclusions after ONE week in Poland? How much time have you spent in Europe? One and a half weeks?

Genealogy / Kameczura surname - any Polish people related? [30]

but cannot find info past when my family immigrated

The 1930 United States Census states that a John Kameczura (*1882) immigrated to the US in 1906. He and his wife Kattie (*1889) had a son named Alexs, who was born in Illinois in 1918. Assuming that these people are your ancestors: have you tried to get hold of the long form birth certificate of Alexs? The document should list the exact birth dates and places of John and Kattie Kameczura, which should then give you the necessary data to continue your research in Poland.

Genealogy / Kameczura surname - any Polish people related? [30]

An official in Austria-Hungary may have easily written down Kamyczura rather than Kameczura or the other way round.

That's interesting. In Prussia/ the eastern provinces of the German Empire, the spelling of surnames was fixed after the introduction of the civil registration offices in 1874. Rarely any name variations. Seems that Austria introduced civil registration only in 1939

News / EU confirms it will take action against Poland over court reforms [554]

When Poland leave, many would follow.

Oh really. Who would leave? Greece? The sooner, the better.

Without Poland there is no EU.

You are overestimating the importance of Poland. Just like the U.K. in the past, the country is slowly building a bad reputation in other member states - moaning, whinging and complaining non-stop.

Not to mention that Serbians arriving

Just what Europe needs: more welfare queens waiting for handouts.

Life / Polish Attitudes toward America [36]

But polaks that move to the USA overwhelming stay permanently which is not the case in Western Europe

Have you considered that it's much more complicated and expensive to move back home from the US than from the U.K. or Germany for example?

Schniady

That seems to be a surname rather than the name of a town. Just a few examples:

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

it WAS the Germans who invaded the Sudetenland in '38

The Sudetenland was given to the Germans by the Brits, French and Italians on September 29th, 1938. No invasion necessary; just a little thing called the Munich Agreement...

SU receiving Polands east land as a war reparation

Nonsense. War reparations from Poland? For what?

The former Polish territories in the east were already occupied by the Soviets at the very beginning of WW2 and they would've kept them no matter what. Territory by the way that to a large extent belonged to the Russian Empire before WW1. They simply took it back, and the Brits and Americans were too weak to stop Stalin from doing so.

Genealogy / Zieminski - Help getting started with family research [15]

I tried entering my Father's details into the search box at FamilySearch but it didn't come up with a match.

That's incorrect. You need to search using 'exact match' (check the checkboxes underneath the names):

familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVZ4-YKW8
familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVDW-4DKN
familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QVDW-QDQH

Once you have access to the original documents, you should be able to find out the names and birth dates of your grandparents and (probably) great grandparents.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

Anti German and Nazi? do you see the ambiguity of your comment.

You misunderstood. They are an anti-German rag because they equate modern day Germany to the Third Reich on a regular basis. On top of that, they regurgitate WW2 ad nauseam (the Nazi articles I was referring to). The Daily Fail isn't only anti-German, by the way. It's also quite anti-Polish. Just read their articles on Polish nationals working in the UK, and then have fun with the comments section.

What should I read?

Anything. Even Breitfart is a scientific journal compared to the Daily Mail. :)

he is not bring up those territories, he says nothing about it.

No, he's "only" suggesting that Germany should pay reparations - which automatically brings us back to the 1954 agreement.

Don't be childish, Iron.

But that is a Germany Russia Issue

You really want Germany and Russia to sit down together and decide what to do about Poland?

The Article below

I understand what you're trying to say, but the Daily Fail is really the last source you would want to quote in this case. They are well known for publishing anti-German and Nazi articles on a daily basis.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

In reality you would have to ask Stalin what was the reason those lands went to Poland.

One of the reasons why it really makes no sense that Kaczyński brings it up again. He's trying to stir sh*it as usual in my opinion.

There were in total 5 times when the issue of reparations was adressed for Poland

Good point.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

it's impossible to distinguish between fact and propaganda concerning this issue at the moment

I agree. In my opinion, this is just another attempt by Kaczyński to create distrust between the two nations. Who knows, maybe it's even the US administration and the British government who are behind all this - trying to break up the EU. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

History / For what the Germans owe Poland one trillion U.S. dollars? [299]

The East Germans agreed to give the former German territories in the east to Poland. In exchange, Poland agreed to waive its right to war reparations. Well, in both cases the Soviets did it, of course, but that's only a formality.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_reparations#Poland

What this means is essentially that Poland would have to return all ex German lands first before it could demand war reparations. Who wants that? Neither Germany nor Poland or any other party involved. Kaczyński came up with this stuff again because Poland is currently under fire regarding the migrants. He did that before when some Germans demanded compensation for their lost property in the east. It's about retaliation and nothing else. Dangerous game he's playing.

This makes Poland look like a bad faith bargainer.

If they really insist that the Polish government of the 1950's wasn't legit because it was controlled by the Soviets, then the Germans could turn that argument around and claim the same for the GDR. All agreements null and void? Impossible. Kaczyński is an idiot.

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

here's an article on quite recent use of "polnische Vernichtungslager" on a German public TV channel website

Apologies then; never heard of it. I still believe though that it was only stupidity like Obama's blunder and not intent. According to Radio Poland, they broadcasted it on Monday and apologized the next day. Was that a one time incident on German TV?

no it is not 'complicated'

Why is that?

The worst atrocities happened in the German death camps located on Nazi-held Polish territory. Maybe that's why they send the kids to the most infamous German death camp located on Nazi-held Polish territory. See what I mean?
