Language / Meaning of "w tern" in Polish [27]

"w ekonomji" (modern 'w ekonomii'

Maf, Ziemowit - do either of you have any idea when this j was dropped from words such as "armija"? I'm trying to narrow it down, and it seems that those spellings fell out of favour after the war, but I can't find anything conclusive.

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

Same with Croatians and Serbians too, you can read so much rubbish online written by them, yet they seem remarkably unwilling to give up their lives in Canada/Sweden/Australia to actually return to those countries.

It really would be so much better if they admitted that Poland isn't really their home.

News / An EU army. Impact on Poland [155]

and younger Czechs have real problems understanding it.

Isn't this rather related to Slovak being a mess in terms of spoken dialects? I spoke to someone from Usti nad Labem a while ago about it, and she reckoned that while the Western Slovak dialect (or essentially TV language) was simple to understand because it was more or less similar to how they speak in Moravia, the messy Eastern dialects were much worse for her. I noticed it when I was there last year - I can get by in places like Bratislava and Zilina, but in Presov and up towards Svidnik/Bardejov, it just sounded like a funny Polish dialect and not like Slovak at all.

Well...so that means there is no "slavic" brotherhood at all, isn't there?

Of course there isn't. Even Czechs and Slovaks couldn't get along, despite speaking mutually intelligible languages.

Yes, a new secular religion in which groups of 'special' individuals demand not equality but privileges and special treatment

Sounds exactly like PiS if you ask me. They've been giving themselves all sorts of special privileges and special treatment without actually contributing anything to society.

And the nationalists marched side by side with them, LOL!

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

More officers on the street, but also more officers living and working in problematic areas. I remember reading a book by one ex-Met detective, and he made the point that moving away from local policing was an absolutely awful idea, because officers no longer had an idea of what was going on. They'd be going into communities and being met with a wall of silence - which only works if these are officers from outside.

Just how dangerous that can be is demonstrated by the current case in the banking sector.

However, the mentality of PiS supporters is that corruption is fine as long as it's PiS being corrupt. That mentality is sick.

They just did what they criticized Poland for in the last two years. Speaking about German hypocrisy

Except it simply isn't the same, no matter how much you repeat the propaganda from PiS. The super-majority required ensures that any candidate attracts support from across the political spectrum, and the role of the Bundesrat also means that the states are involved in the election of candidates. Any party putting foward a candidate that didn't enjoy broad political support simply wouldn't succeed.

But don't let facts bother you, especially when it's easier to repeat the propaganda spoon-fed to you from Nowogrodzka.

For every action there's a reaction.

For every reaction by Poland, the more she becomes isolated and weak diplomatically. No-one takes Poland seriously in Europe, not even Hungary. 27-1 should be a reminder exactly who is winning and who is losing.

UK, Ireland / Mixed feelings after moving from Poland to England [36]

I've got the same in the opposite direction. I went on a tour of Tito's villa in Igalo (near Herceg-Novi in Montenegro) and after getting fed up with the English translation, I just listened to the guy speaking in...their language and understood plenty of it. It helps that I know some basics in BCMS and I've spent years studying the 1990's in the Balkans, but still, I was approaching it as a Polish speaker who was merely familiar with the melody of the language.

A great regret of mine is never having been able to spend some serious amounts of time there, especially in Sarajevo with the rich influence of Arabic/Turkish on the language.

Poles will stay with the USA, thank you very much.

Even though the USA was the country which carved up Europe between themselves and the USSR, thus condemning Poland to 44 years of Communist rule?

News / An EU army. Impact on Poland [155]

Get out of a tunnel vision trap and see a big picture for once in your life.

The big picture is clear: America hates the idea of the EU becoming independent and able to do their own thing. They hate the Euro because it threatens the dollar, they hate the idea of an EU Army because it threatens American dominance in Europe and threatens their ability to sell military products to Europe. Everything America does (even down to supporting certain political parties in Europe and opposing Nord Stream 2) is about American interests first. Why should we, as Europeans, bow down to them?

As I said, it's all about America hating the fact that Europeans no longer want to lick their boots, especially after the remarks that Trump made about NATO.

This new "EU army" is only a Franco-German project so far

Supported by others. Zeman supported it, Orban and others in the EPP all support it as well.

Most Europeans aren't interested in licking the boots of Trump and America, fortunately.

Law / Lawyer familiar with EU law needed (to sue my employer in Poland) [65]

A national [British in this case] citizenship has precedence over the EU "citizenship"

It doesn't have any precedence, because the two confer different rights. However, just to show you otherwise, in the Scottish independence referendum, EU citizens were allowed to vote. Clearly British citizenship didn't give any additional rights there.

No matter how much you try and argue about this, the fact remains that EU citizenship exists and is used on a practical level daily, not least by the millions of EU citizens living in different member states to their own. Those numbers are growing, including those of us who actively encourage Muslims with EU citizenship to move to Poland just because it's funny ;)

News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

I wouldn't measure the support on the size of marches or parades...as the past has shown.

Especially as most people on that march were men supporting PiS and not nationalists at all. Most estimates place the amount of nationalists at around 30%, so even if you believe the nonsense 200,000 figure, that means only 60,000 nationalists turned up, i.e. the same amount as was claimed last year.

That means that national citizenship does take precedence over the additional "EU citizenship".

No, it doesn't. Nowhere does it say that one is superior to the other. The two exist clearly side-by-side.

The beautiful thing is to change the Treaty of Lisbon, it requires unanimity from all member states. Somehow, I can't imagine France or Germany giving up EU citizenship just to please a few bald men from Poland.

Not to mention that it was passed in an undemocratic manner when Ireland was forced to vote twice for it to pass.

Ireland wasn't forced at all. They were offered an improved deal, they took it. That's how negotiations work.

I like to correct it on every single occasion that there's no such country as the EU. And that the "EU flag" is just a logo

You can do what you want, it doesn't change the fact that citizenship of the European Union exists. Still, if it was "just a logo", I wonder why the police went after those that burnt it in public.

your national citizenship ie. Polish or Hungarian always takes precedence over the virtual EU citizenship.

Incorrect. National citizenship doesn't take precedent, the two exist simultaneously. You can call it "virtual" all you want, but the Treaty of Lisbon makes it crystal clear that it exists. It's why EU citizens have strong and protected rights in other EU countries, and more importantly, is the reason why there's nothing Poland can do about mass emigration to Poland by other EU citizens. Such a pleasure, especially when you have a hobby of posting jobs on African Facebook job pages for French speakers in Poland ;)

Wait, so you don't want to see a justice in action but rather witness "taking advantage of the court"?

The Polish state is ever so kind as to offer significant protections for employees in labour courts, including the free use of sworn translators throughout the entire process and very affordable fees. Rather nice, really.

There's no such thing as "EU citizen".

Except there is. Article 20, Treaty of Lisbon. Do try harder.

So stop being such a special snowflake and grow a pair.

I think it'll be such fun to take advantage of the Polish legal system.

Ugh, yes, in Polish obviously.

Judges in labour courts are known for being pro-employee, so there's nothing to fear from them. The important thing is to have the case well prepared, preferably illustrated with examples from the Supreme Court which are technically non-binding, but in practice, judges wiill obey them if there's no reason not to.

UK, Ireland / UK Sky TV in Poland [39]

Is this still the case ?

Still the case. In fact, 2.4m is really needed in Warsaw these days.

is there not such a thing as a Signal booster that i could use ? or an other trick ?

Nope. The signal simply doesn't extend that far. BBC is on the so-called "spot beam", which means it's aimed at the UK. You can get away with 2m in Western Poland, but 2.4m is the minimum in the east. Some people say that 3m would be safer, but I think 2.4m is enough. Be warned that you might need permission to put up a large dish.

If a 2m Dish really is required, dose anyone know where i can buy 1 ?

diomar.pl/anteny-satelitarne-do-3m/ for instance.

The other thing - labour courts are "user-friendly" - they know and understand that individuals aren't legal experts, so judges will help you with the progression of the case. You just need to be prepared, that's all - you can ask the judge to give you a quick overview of court procedure, too. The trial will be conducted in English, but a sworn translator will be provided if needed.

Please leave the thread clear and do not write unless you are not a lawyer ready to take the case or willing to offer some legal advice.

You need to take your case through the Polish courts first. You'll want to make an application to the Sąd Pracy (labour court), which has jurisdiction over employment matters.

You can submit an application by yourself, you don't need a lawyer. Fees depend on what you're asking for, but the good thing about the labour court is that you're only responsible for your own legal fees, not the fees of the defendant.

Prepare a good case, provide as much relevant evidence as possible, include witnesses and the case will proceed from there.

Law / Traveling abroad while waiting for Karta Pobytu, as a citizen of US in Poland [3]

And If I'm legally allowed to live in Poland, then I feel that I'm legally allowed to be in Schengen zone.

No, doesn't work like that. The stamp is only recognised as a means of staying legally in Poland, not in Schengen. You need to fly directly from Poland to a destination outside of the Schengen zone.

I essentially don't know if the Karta Pobytu application process in Poland has been propagated throughout Schengen zones

No, it hasn't. You're only legally allowed to remain in Poland. In other Schengen countries, you've overstayed.

They had to be removed.

They had to be removed because they weren't from PiS. If they were, they would have been left alone, just like Piotrowicz and all the rest of them.

Much closer to PRL style patronage...

It's what Kaczyński knows best. The epic career of that spokeswoman for the MON that followed Misiewicz was a perfect example - she went from being a major to a colonel in a year. It made a complete mockery of the Polish army, as did the army having to salute that fool Misiewicz.
