History / Pole who burned himself to protest the 1968 Soviet invasion [81]

Atlas Shrugged and Animal Farm should be required reading in schools. They can even let them read Das Kapital to balance it out.

Never read any of those books. Atlas Shrugged seems interesting.

Atlas Shrugged
Her stated goal of writing the text was "to show how desperately the world needs prime movers and how viciously it treats them" and to portray "what happens to a world without them."

Don,t worry about it MG..there will always be people who can,t believe that anyone can be something out of the ordainary...It seems to be common in Poland..

Yes indeed it's common in Poland and in the rest of Europe. Kinda pisses me of some times.

In Scandinavia they call it the "Jante Law": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jante_Law

The ten rules state:

1. Don't think that you are special.
2. Don't think that you are of the same standing as others.
3. Don't think that you are smarter than others.
4. Don't fancy yourself as being better than others.
5. Don't think that you know more than others.
6. Don't think that you are more important than others.
7. Don't think that you are good at anything.
8. Don't laugh at others.
9. Don't think that any one of us cares about you.
10. Don't think that you can teach others anything.

Atleast they don't got it in America, so 1+ for america in this case!!!

Ps.
I still hate american imperialism!!!!!

Hardly plenty, How many people live in Europe?

Indeed it's not many, and we should be happy that this dosen't occur in Europe everyday. But we should not deny it and say that this ain't occur in Europe just cuz we are "civilized".

With all due respect, Im an avid reader of the news and not in the last 20 years has any English, Welsh or Scottish person set fire to themsevles in prostest..so..I strongly disagree with you..we do not set fire to ourselves..Its not something Europeans do..

Did you even check my link?

Plenty of people in Europe set them self in fire the past 20 years.

1995 Reinhold Elstner from Germany
1998 Alfredo Ormando from Italy
2006 Eleftheriya Fortulaki from Greece
2007 Uddhav Bhandari UK
1993 Graham Bamford UK

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_self-immolations

Indeed it's sick and twisted.

I don't agree with that...after all he removed himself from the struggle for freedom.
One enemy less to watch for the NKVD.

Well he inspired 4-5 people to do the same thing for the "cause"

Jan Palach being one of them.

But I can't even fathom what it needs to decide to burn one self to death...the most excruciating painful death I think. Should I respect him for that? I can't help but I do...

Yea it's really insane, i seriously can't even imagine the pain.

No it wasnt..there are ways in a civilised world of achieving things...Indian girls in villages married off to abusive men resort to this..not grown educated men in Europe...Surely you have to agree with me?

Yes indeed but still people in europe do.

I guess it's the most powerfull way to show your anger/disappointment. It's like "I don't like what you just did so now im gonna kill myself in the most F*** up way and the world will blame it on you"

And his actions solved what?

Like the czech priest said in the article

"[His death] was a symbol, it was an offering for freedom."

We dont do martyrs in the west..

Europe had many people in the past 100 years that set them self in fire in protest.

Here is even a list

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_self-immolations

People seems to set them self in fire for the most wierdest reasons xD

The Swed Per Axel Arosenius
After a dispute with the Swedish taxation authorities on March 21 1981, Per Axel Arosenius protested by setting himself on fire outside their office in Nacka. He died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was 60 years old.

I feel for his family more than I do for him

Yea he was a father of 5 children.

History / Pole who burned himself to protest the 1968 Soviet invasion [81]

Ryszard Siwiec, a Polish teacher and former World War II-era Home Army soldier, who, protesting against the Soviet-led aggression in which his country participated, set himself on fire in front of tens of thousands of people. died four days after his self-immolation in September 1968 at a stadium in Warsaw during a propaganda festival.

1968 the Warsaw Pact countries invaded Czechoslovakia on Soviet orders to put an end to the Prague Spring, Other Soviet-bloc armed forces, including Poland's military, were also forced by their Soviet masters to participate in the invasion.

A monument has been unveiled in Prague to the Polish hero

History / Colonel Mikolaj Sciborski - unknown Polish leader of OUN [20]

I do not hate ukrainians, the sad part is everything i wrote here is true and can be easily proven with online sources if challenged.

I never said it's not true, but your dedication about our beloved ukrianian Brothers really fascinates me ;)

USA, Canada / Feminine surname endings in America? [48]

what's that have to do with anything? it has more to do with the english language and tradition.

It's about respecting other cultures. Kowalski/Kowalska

Example: People in Poland Would think that Victoria Kowalski would be an transvestite if she would visit her ancestral country since she is using the masculin form in her surname... Is that fair?

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Just look at our languages and compare.

Well if we gonna start to talk language, culture etc etc then you can include the whole Europe, instead of just saying Western europe bla bla...

Tired of people who are so uneducated and still use the political form "western" "eastern" europe that dissapeared in the late 80's.

This is how Europe is divided today.

Just because it happened thousand years ago, they are related. But this doesn't mean they like each other. It just means that they are all Germanic ppl.

Yes indeed they are related, i never denied that. But closely? NAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Iceland, Scotland, England, Ireland, Normandy, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Noone of them are really "Closely" related besides the scandivanian countries ( except for Finland )...

Scandinavia have been isolated for thousands of years and haven't been mingling with other nations, besides raping a few saxons in England.

Same goes for England... English people today are problably more related to India then to Germany due to the fact that germans never been mingling with the brits.

And don't start to talk about germanic people cuz that happend thousands of years ago.

Yes, and how many Americans have Western-European ancestry? You should know that all North-Western European people are closely related, genetically speaking.

What exactly do you mean by western and north western?

Since France, Germany and Poland got more genetic bounds then they do with England, Sweden etc etc.

Ah, but you were talking about your sisters in a derogatory manner, not me.

I did not mention anything about them.... You did.

Oh really? And just how many people in America do you think have English ancestors? Hmm? (You guys probably speak English for a reason, but hey, it could be me who just doesn't get it!)

13.0% of the total U.S. population does have British ancestry.

In total 39,975,969 (2008)

You sure do make the same spelling mistakes as her.

British or brittish W/E

did I lost something? Some dirty David's family secrets have been revealed here? ;)

Nothing so stop with your dirty thoughts you sick animal...

No, there should be nothing for new born children. If you can't afford them, don't have them!

Well i bet it can't be easy to raise a child without any support from the goverment. Especially for single parents.

You'd call that personal? Jeez, I never knew you were *that* sensitive. (Sorry babe!)

The post you made about my sisters just shows your conversation level ;)

I probably shouldn't tell you the guy in the video is an American. That would be mean.

I know he's from America, but i bet he is one of those with english ancestry. He really looks brittish ;)

News / Poland's budget problems = Polish funerals [27]

It makes perfect sense to cut money such as this - all it's doing is subsidising the funeral sector.

Yah it's insane that they give out 6,487 zlotys for a dead guy. I mean this is actually serious money.

Instead of giving 6,487 zlotys to a dead guy maybe they should give this amount for every new born instead? This would for sure help the parents.
