UK, Ireland / British Equivalents to Matura Results [30]

GCSEs seem more like Standard Grades (Revised) or O-Grades to me.

MATURA is closer to Scottish Revised Higher Grades or England's A-Grades.

History / Israeli wants to wipe Poland off the map! [198]

I don't think they want to remove all Arabs from the 'Jewish' state, Joe. They give them positions of power and allow some degree of interaction with local Jews. If they were so paranoid, they wouldn't even allow that.

I don't think Hamas would have offered a ceasefire at all.

History / 1587-1588 Poland's War with Austria [22]

Poles really examine the totality of factors that make them how they are now. Gotta admire that circumspection.

As for the war with Austria, well, I wasn't there so I don't know :)

History / CONSIDERATIONS ON THE GOVERNMENT OF POLAND April 1772 [12]

Well, Rousseau was in that sphere pretty much for most of his active career. He also had able-bodied contemporaries to help him out. His imprint has largely disappeared I feel. How do I know? Well, I studied constitutional law quite a while back (1996, LOL) and also taught a Polish legal advisor just 2 or 3 months back. We examined the Polish Constitution and it underwent quite a transformation in 1989. 1997 was another major period of reform.

It's just like liberalism. We cannot utter modern liberalism in the same breath as pioneers like John Stuart Mill. Times have moved on and we are inundated with rules which cover almost every contingency.

News / Russia, Poland ready agreement on visa-free travel [71]

I think Torq came with a little sting there, CK. Feelin the scorpion's lashing out?

Russia lags behind in many areas. Without mafia assistance, your government would have sunk. Or, at best, rigidly clinging to any available gas profits.

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

Matowy, I'd listen to what Dariusz is saying. A lot of Muslims do cause problems for various countries but I would issue a caveat. The Press is prone to stirring things up and they want to create enemies of Islam.

Most people just go by what they are fed and don't know the true picture. For the umpteenth time, I will quote Bob Dylan. Many Westerners should follow the logic, 'don't criticise what you can't understand'. One of the best quotes ever, IMHO.

Surpassed? How about bypassing instead? Only thanks to Ukraine can you freely circulate your gas. Belarus was gonna put a stop to your gas reaching Europe. How about that? Dealing with dictators isn't very nice, is it?

He was provoked as they said he hadn't settled a debt and he had. They threw all manner of things at him and there is no documented account of him, that I'm aware of anyway, where he commissions an attack and beats people.

Anyway, that's way back in 1770. Communism was 1946-1989.

Always ready to help? Many Poles are far from convinced of that.

UK, Ireland / Poles living in the UK returning home or not? [63]

I met some tonight that had returned, though only for a week. I don't like the arrogance of those that think they can speak English really well. Deflation tactics are called for.

David Cameron is considering introducing compulsory language tests for those thinking about coming across and, apparently, those that are in the country now. If you are not taking active steps towards procuring a job and don't have the appropriate language skills, it could be the road to the big heave ho.

Life / Outgrowing Socialism in Poland: how long will it now take? [8]

I think Poles are wary of it. They won't overly embrace it but might intersperse some of its principles with standard features of capitalism. The oldies here still lean heavily on the state but the new generation will learn better to fend for themselves.

And how about Italian-Portuguese-Colombian people in Germany? ;) ;) Do they see the Sephardic Jew within? ;) ;)

... this is despicable! Britain had a problem with this many years ago. I remember watching an Aberdeen Vs Rangers match at Pittodrie and Mark Walters was really singled out for being black. I felt like punching some of those that were saying those things, there's just no call for it.

a fresh and tragic event. Only 1 month old.

Nice points, Trevek. This has happened in different places, notably Africa and America. People turn against their own. Poles turn against their own too, though that is not a race-related issue.

Simple minds produce simple thoughts so I can well imagine some of those young buffoons poking fun at coloured folk. We can do without those types.

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

Great point there, Olaf! Round it up to 10PLN and you just need to hand across a note. Besides, dycha notes are very useful when giving change off of a 50.
