News / New constitution In Poland? [57]

Only by a minority of leftists, liberals, agnostics and suchlike assorted eggheads - not by the Polish nation as a whole. And it's the nation that counts, not some snobbish elite.

Apart from that being simply untrue, you come across as if you think that was some excuse for the crank who murdered him.

And President Narutowicz is still a highly respected figure across society. His murderer is not.

There are just some people who have no respect for a constitution and the rule of law, but instead prefer mob rule if it suits their own inadequate prejudices.

He's one of everybody's bête noires - some of his quotes are horrific. President Narutowicz however is very widely respected and his murder by a crazed nationalist was a tragedy.

Yes, he was a true democrat. Unfortunately there are some who can't accept democracy. The failed Fourth Republic project was an example of this.

News / New constitution In Poland? [57]

Plus Pilsudski, Europe's only liberal dictator had to deal with a nationalist loony murdering the first elected leader on a spurious pretext, plus an attempted coup d'état by similar pond life. And constant trouble stirring from supporters of the ghastly Dmowski, a tendency that stil lingers in the darker corners of Polish politics.

Those days however, as Pilsudski said, is not the time for authoritarian governments. Poland is a liberal democracy and will stay that way.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

As far as I know he wasn't very political apart from green issues. And irrelevant to this thread. The psychology of the Polish women who slept with him unprotected knowing full well how ill he was and what illness he had is a different matter and worthy of discussion elsewhere.

Strange you should mention him as a justification for your vile racism. Though the low crime rate in Warsaw among immigrant communities in Poland compared to the population as a whole would by your logic be a very good argument for more Arabs and Africans and fewer ethnic Poles.

Same here. I wonder why Wulkan thinks that there are 2000 extremist Islamist protestors in Poland? Where are they hiding? Under the bed?

Study / Vistula University in Poland. Any experience? Any student? [57]

Dominic, it is very much a 'real university'. A degree from their may not quite as useful or as rigorous as studying History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, Philosophy at Edinburgh or English at Gonville and Caius, Cambridge, however they offer real courses and a rewarding and enjoyable education.

Or standing round in crowds shouting at anti-fascists. Wulkan, your 'ruch narodowy' has more in common with the politician you mention than any other.

100% correct...

As the two posts above illustrate beautifully....

News / New constitution In Poland? [57]

Nope. None of that is worthy of emulation. As for trying to synchronise elections, this would bring a lack of continuity at local authority level. As for electing judges, prosecutors etc, this is a horrific idea and the drawbacks are well enough known. Let workers in the public sector be chosen using normal recruitment methods for their competence at their job, not their ability electioneering every 5 years.

I would however like to see less central government appointments in Poland.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

Completely illogical!

Exactly, however racists are not known for logic. Or intelligence. Or decency. Most educated people in Poland are not racist and even among the less sophisticated or cosmopolitan there is an inherent decency.

"Poland for the Polish - no room for the others that insist on changing the Polish culture.

This from is actually a staggering comment coming from someone from thousands of miles away who doesn't even speak the language or have any understanding of contemporary Poland

Bigot = intolerant person,
Racist = intolerant of a race,

This from a fat middle-aged bloke who used to post here pretending to be a young woman, even with photos and encourage male posters to enjoy 'romantic' PMs with 'her'.

News / Polish-foreigner marriages increasing [48]

+2 And I would suspect that most marriages between people from Poland and from the Arab world (not that there are many according to those figures) are perfectly respectable.

Travel / Ryanair flying domestic in Poland? [46]

For me it should be the same - I probably live slightly nearer Modlin than Okecie. One problem is actually from Ryanair's point of view. They can't take advantage of ticket sales for connections because other airlines don't fly there and it isn't set up for transfers - you have to go landside and in again. Plus there's no VIP lounge - something that stymies them a bit for business travel and long connections.

I do use Modlin sometimes (but try to avoid Ryainair). They're actually more expensive sometimes for the north of England than flying down south and travelling up, due to heavy demand.

But yes, there are pluses too, and the number of routes they have is growing. I just dread my employer finding a cheaper route from there :-(

Travel / Ryanair flying domestic in Poland? [46]

A cheap ticket! Domestic flights are a bargain in Poland - we flew WAW-WRO recently on EuroLOT for much less than the Pendolino. One way that Ryanair benefits is because they've got a much larger and newer fleet than EuroLOT and can be much more flexible with timings and at ditching unprofitable or less profitable routes. If only they weren't based at Modlin :-(

Travel / Ryanair flying domestic in Poland? [46]

IST has massively expanded - to the point now where it's stuffed with people. For the last few years transfers during the summer have been a misery and the crowd surfing to the smoking balcony is sometimes surreal. They're extending it apparently however this will take time and routing more non-connecting flights to Sabha Gokcen across the Bosphorous (this now has a connection to WAW). Meanwhile WAW is well placed to become a mini-hub. Kiev is doing well with this now (the cheapest route WAW-DXB is through Kiev now).

Ryanair will miss a lot, being stuck out at Modlin however it won't be long before they start using that as a micro-hub. And Wizzair could clean up being based at WAW.

For the Ryanair domestic flights, they're in fact missing out on rather a lot, though their share price is still huge (and Wizzair doing pretty well).

Work / Job Conditions and Monthly Expenses for students in Poland [16]

If you're doing a course taught in English, you'll find all your fellow students are in the same boat. You'll pick up some Polish and there will almost certainly be Polish lessons available.

Although you'll get a lot more out of your time in Poland if you learn the language (it isn't hard, aim to make a hundred mistakes a day) you should be aware that there are people who live there for years and don't speak it. But the basics are easy and other students will probably be very willing to help in situations where you will need it.

Just because their supporters are fascists doesn't mean RN is too

It's a (very minor) political party. They are their members.

Life / Polish people and racism. [943]

It doesn't pretend to be anything else, Wulkan. If you'd like some more links about the neo-fascism of 'ruch narodowy' (they don't even deny it themselves) I'll be happy to oblige. Also some pictures of their supporters standing round in silly uniforms making fascist salutes.

And the sad thing is that despite Poland's centuries' old liberal tradition and the pluralism in the bigger cities, these clowns with thei flags and shouting get picked up by the media, giving a very bad impression of racism to outsiders.

@polishcleaner, hello, Levi. Odd that a troll from Brazil would say stuff like that. I suppose racists have no depths to which they will not sink.

Work / Job Conditions and Monthly Expenses for students in Poland [16]

2500 is far more than most students have to live on.

Mike00 should budget a few hundred for a place to stay in a Hall of Residence or in a shared flat. The rest depends on his expectations, however many, many students have 1000 to live on and a student with 2000 would count himself lucky.

Well, it's a respected mainstream newspaper, even if you don't like it.

And thanks for the unattributed quote from Wikipedia which backs up that your 'ruch narodowy' are new-fascists.

As I say, not typical of the way people are in Poland and anyone worried about racism should ignore these clowns as everyone else does.
