Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

Oops, due to unexpected expenses at the end of June, we won`t go on a seperate trip to Wrocław. Instead, we will have a few days` stopover in Gdańsk on the way to the seaside in Hel where we usually spend a part of summer.

Now I am checking museums, monuments, playgrounds, car parks and Red Army cemeteries in Gdańsk. :):):):)

See you in this thread next year.

Oops, a sudden change of plans. The weather is going to be dull at the seaside for the next few days, so we are going to Wrocław after all. I spent 3 hours today collecting info on museums, historical monuments, playgrounds, best views, gardens, cemeteries, churches, parks, free parking zones, statues, zoos, etc.

i think it's tanks at the russian war memorial not canons. edit: it's both.

Yes, it is both. It looks like a beautiful, well-designed cemetery.

Life / Political correctness in Poland [210]

However, there are also advantages of PC. Instead of saying Cygan ( gypsy), people are advised to say Roma which still sounds neutral, while cygan is highly derogative and combined with worst connotations of a thief, cheater and liar.

Life / Political correctness in Poland [210]

Unfortunately, political correctness is also present in Poland.

Case 1:
20 years ago, they changed the scale of grading pupils from 2-5 to 1-6 scale. For 8 years the grade 2 was called mierny - poor/weak. In 1999 they changed it into dopuszczający - passing/acceptable.

I thought it was really funny.

What else?

Love / How to Ask my Polish girlfriend to Marry ME [6]

are you being sarcastic or what, plus its a letter not a speech.

I am dead serious.
I didn`t know it is a letter - I just read the beginning:

Yes, you are right, women prefer the Barbarians:

Love / How to Ask my Polish girlfriend to Marry ME [6]

Ok... thats it,

It is definitely too short. Girls prefer longer speeches.

Thank you so much, and wish me luck ;)))))))

I wish you luck. Try to run quickly and hide wherever you can - the best for you would be to lock yourself in the bathroom and wait till she stops kicking on the door and leaves the house.

News / Lithuanian ambassador 'Poles not loyal citizens' [63]

In 1950s, Lithuanians tried to stop Poles from leaving for Poland.

Today, they have no right to complain about Polish disloyalty.

Further, Lithuanian ideology declared that many of the individuals who declared themselves as Polish were in fact "polonized Lithuanians". Again, the rural population was denied the right to leave Lithuania due to their lack of official pre-war documentation of Polish citizenship.[19][20] Contrary to an agreement with Poland, many individuals were threatened with the repayment of debts or with arrests if they chose repatriation. In the end, only about 50% of the registered 400,000 people were deported.

Love / The importance of Catholicism during marriage with a Polish girl [44]

Now, it is better. :):):)

My wife is fine, thanks :)

She may be fine, but you aren`t. :):):)

I was just being truthful.

Yes, and I appreciate it. :):):)

In Scotland, we are trained in how Catholics are different from Protestants. We have a sectarian divide and educated folks see the difference. In Poland, you have never truly known that so you have no benchmarks or yardsticks. Too much blind faith exists here and A J would embarrass many with his smart analysis.

Great, however, half of it is lost on me and other Poles, I suppose, as you are using too sophisticated coloquialisms. :):):) I don`t have time to look them up. Could you write normal English? What is sectarian divide, benchmarks, yardsticks? :):):):)

Seanus, I can see that today you have fallen out not only with mods, but your wife again. :):):):):):):)
Stop this cheap bashing, really. :):):):)

Shame on you. :):):):)

PS. I hope you are all right.
PS2. Sorry for that impotent. I didn`t intend to offend you.

Love / The importance of Catholicism during marriage with a Polish girl [44]

Oh really? So which is the part you disagree with? (I'm curious!)

:):):):)

I can see you qouted me many times. And presented your stand quite thoroughly. It sounds reasonable and very wise. Taken from great philosophy and ethics classes, for sure. However, I don`t care about it because what I said was directed to galford, not you. And what is more, I hate philosophy. But thank you anyway. :):):)

Think about the future of your children for a second and be sensible, and have one or two children. I mean, do you *really* want your children to grow up in a world of twenty billion people or maybe even more, because everyone wants to have a lot of children?

However, this part is really pathetic. It is not longer philosophy, it is a cry of an impotent. :):):)

News / Polish journalist's "show trial" Belarus [40]

However Belarus is cleaner than Poland and has impressive avenues and buildings.Belarussian men are well trained with muscles and belarussian women are of another planet.

Yes. Also, don`t forget that Belarussians managed to keep their traditional, century-old life style and didn`t allow the corruptive influence of Western civilization spoil their good mood. Here, in Poland and the rest of Western Europe, we have a rat race. Belarus is free of that sh.t.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

Pawian, you're talking about stereotypes of others but you're making the same mistake by saying that we (means all of us) don't know anything about Poland.

I am not making any mistakes, my friend. I just know what Westerners know and think about Poland. A few guys here and there fascinated with Poland don`t make a summer yet.

As long as we won't learn how to discuss, nothing will ever change my friend (I hope you don't mind me calling you that).

My friend, you don`t need to tell me this. Tell it to others.

Love / The importance of Catholicism during marriage with a Polish girl [44]

Not so fast. :):):)

One question to the audience is about: if my character as a liberal will bring more troubles of understanding in the future as a couple, maybe even during a long-term marriage.

Yes, everything may be fine, as long as you haven`t got children.

What will you do if kids appear? Will you agree to your wife teaching them Catholicism? When staying in Poland, will you agree to send them to Catholic religion classes at school? Accept Holy Communion? Confirmation? Catholic wedding?

If your answer is yes, there won`t be any problem.

Sorry dude but Catholicism states that girls that don't marry in the Catholic church can be excommunicated, therefore she won't be able to marry you any other way.

Not true.

Galford, a piece of advice, if I may. I married a strong Catholic believer and I don`t regret. She is a good, faithful wife and I fully trust her.

Accept your partner`s beliefs, have a lot of children and teach them your wife`s faith. If you also teach them tolerance and understanding, they will be perfect citizens one day.

Life / Why no Polonian polka music in Poland? [7]

I am afraid not. Polka is neither Polish nor Russian dance. It is Czech. Didn`t you know about it?

News / Polish journalist's "show trial" Belarus [40]

Current Belarus reminds me of Poland in mid 1980s. The regime is trying to supress the independent thinking, but its end will come sooner or later. Down with Lukashenka. :):):)

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

It's not a pack of lies or dirty propaganda, seriously that what i've been told, you might not believe, but there is no reason no lie,

Do`t believe everything what people tell you because they might distort the reality for some reason, I don`t know what.

This is "what you've been told". I support Pawian's views. Poles and Russians come along well,

I wish very much that Poles and Russians can come to Poland or Russia and have good relationship...

It is happening in real life.

It has just come to my mind what else Poles owe to Russians. I think it is a kind of respect. What do I mean?

Common Westerners, like Germans, French, American, British etc consider Poles unruly barbarians from the East. They know nothing about Poland and feed on old stereotypes of Polish poverty, anarchy and stupidity. What is worse, they are not interested to find out what Poland/Poles are like. Only a few individuals from western nations (BB, for example, :):):)), have a grasp of Polish reality through various media or even real life in Poland.

On the other hand, in a common Russian`s view, Poles are equal and the same as Russians. After all, we are Slavs from the same root and we do share certain similarities, starting from the language.

What is more, a lot of Russians consider us Westerners. A few years ago I read a story about a low-rank Russian official who went abroad for the first time and, commenting on the visible development and progress made by our country, said that it was what he had imagined rich Western Europe should look like.

In communism, Polish culture - books, films, TV serials, art, music - was known not only to Russian intelligentsia but also common Russians. Polish actresses or female singers are still remembered today.

Only Polish ballet was thought of badly.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

Some teachers are anal.

Most are.

Go with 'normal' folk ;)

hmm, you think I should?

First, I have to decide if I am normal or anal.

Actually, we didn`t drink with our Russian teacher of English. :):):):) I only organised free English teaching resources for her, and she brought me publications with Russian music from Russia. Her name was Tatyana.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

Sorry, but it is a blatant pack of lies. Stop this dirty propaganda. Common Poles and Russians get on very well together. A Russian teacher of English once tought in my school, she had been welcomed very warmly by Polish teachers and pupils, and there were no tensions whatsoever.
