News / The chances for Warsaw to become capital of eventual Slavic confederation? [183]

Given that Warsaw is often the laughing stock of many other places in Poland, I'd doubt it Crow. It is the centre of government and that's the only reason it would be. Places like Silesia don't take too well to Warsaw folk. I see it in class. One girl makes a point of saying she is from there and the Silesians have a little giggle to themselves. They are gorol, not hanys.

M-G, some Bosniaks would appear to have done as many Serbs were placed in graves. Nasser Oric was acquitted and Serbs were exonerated too. I don't have much faith in the international court system when they assoilzie prima facie cases which are clear.

I meant move on in the sense of focus on sth else. The Serbian government has apologised which tells me that they believe it happened. Revenge against innocent people? That's just wrong and is NOT proper revenge.

Rock, when it comes to cevavcipi (or whatever they are called), I don't know who to believe. They sound like sth I had in Lithuania (cepelini or sth). For example, the Poles think cabbage is Polish but it was given to them by Celts who, in the 6th century AD, brought it from Asia.

M-G, the CIA, ROTFL. You rely on that crap??? The CIA and FBI are 2 of the most corrupt institutions out there. Anti Serbian too.

BB, some get stupid over Auschwitz. It is clear that the numbers were high but 6 million? That's likely BS too.

M-G, sources vary and that's just reality. Some have the number of Serbs killed in 1992 at around 2800 (through genocide). As Crow said, we need to move on and remind ourselves what is written in Auschwitz concerning history not repeating itself.

Anyway, do Serbs really know that much about Poles, Crow. Do they really see ethnic kin as a factor as they don't with Croatia and didn't with Slovenia for quite some time?

Geez, what is the Pope doing here? He's acting weird on a boat :)

Sobieski, go and research Vlasenica. Who was in attendance at the post-genocide (of Serbs) ceremony? None other than Radovan Karadzic. He was no doubt infuriated at grossly inhumane mutilations of his fellow countrymen. I would be too. Check up on the Muslim Doves and El Hazid. Nasser Oric too.

Crow, I have to say that the evidence of Srebrenica speaks for itself. Petrovic erasing part of a cassette was evidence in itself. What happened to all of those Bosniaks? Mladic was framed in a badly translated video and the Bosniaks described themselves as safe, just hot. What is your theory?

Many thanks, Crow! I saw them in Belgrade. I was also impressed with the service which came with a smile and they were very helpful. Try Lincolnshire sausages, they are very nice skinless sausages. Poland makes top notch sausages but not skinless ones, I think.

Work / Average monthly salary in Poland is around 1000 PLN (few hundred bucks). [387]

Robbed money? LOL. The Irish economy was built up by hard graft from Poles. When the bubble burst, they had their scapegoat. They can't have it both ways.

300PLN is not living in poverty if it's disposable. You can eat fish and rolls for quite cheap here.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

Pizza and ketchup has generally been discussed in this thread without too much deviation so I will digress a little and ask the following.

How popular is Maggi amongst Poles here? My wife's dad was a little surprised that I added both Maggi and pepper to the jarzynowa soup I had today. I liberally threw them in but I like to have contrastive flavours on occasion. Generally I wouldn't when it comes to soup as soup is to have a given flavour. For example, I wouldn't add anything to cream of chicken soup (esp Baxters) but it would depend if the manufacturer made it too weak. In that case, a pinch of salt works wonders.

Back to the thread, ketchup works better on certain pizzas than others. With pepperoni or margherita, it goes well. With seafood or 4-cheese pizzas, it can add sth that doesn't need to be added.

Life / Polish child-parent relations? [3]

Beware of the great deception! I'd say that it is natural to argue here amongst some young children but it is more of a convention that any real heated affair. Nothing to worry about!

The boomerang generation is a sociological phenomenon here. When they leave the nest, there is a real chance that they will return due to the pressures of life. Therefore, it is not in their interests to rock the boat and disrupt the harmony. So again I say, don't think that they are fighting with their olds as it is sth expected here and it's a good thing. Poles state their position and they don't like fence-sitters.

Some kids turn to drugs and still their parents don't instantly disown them. They know that it isn't part of the broader culture and they are able to be 'rescued'. My final word, don't underestimate the family-oriented culture here. They are tight knit!

Food / Types of CHEESE in Poland [150]

Yeah, there are still a few blocks left. I see most Poles prefer to buy the pre-cut blocks of cheese as I myself sometimes do. You get more for your money but usually less taste. Some of the gouda is decent though not like you'd get in Holland, I'd imagine.

Life / Importance of Religion in Poland [187]

I wouldn't want some crazy men to get stupid ideas for their women ;) ;) ;)

I loved that 'No More Bush' campaign where women shaved their bits :) :)

Please, I beg, never let me see the day when the mohair beret brigade do the same :) This is where religion can be positive in preserving moral standards and avoiding the corruption of the masses :)

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

Grilling it is legendary! Obviously, charcoal works wonders but I have a conventional heater which does the trick (it has a 250o grill setting). I had a grilled sausage just 2.5hrs ago, mighty tasty! God Bless Poland for their range of sausages! I don't like eating a lot of meat due to sympathy with the vegetarian philosophy (and out of weight concerns) but once in a while I can savour a well-grilled kiełbasa, especially with Kamis's Russian mustard :) :) :)

Food / Types of CHEESE in Poland [150]

Frd, there is still cheddar in Gliwice's main Tesco. I was there tonight and they had a new batch in. I couldn't resist buying some, despite my wife's insistence that I didn't. I put my little stomach increase down to water retention. She puts it down to alcohol abuse ;) ;) ;) (I drink less than the average guy, I'd say).

I love Cambozola cheese. Camembert and Gorgonzola fusion, tasty!

Life / Importance of Religion in Poland [187]

Good question! I think the standard conception across the board is that he that he has a beard and long hair. Oh, that's Jesus :)

God is possibly like some entity in Star Trek, a divine force that is feared for his awesome 'presence'. That's actually quite a poser you put there, noreenb. I'd scratch my beard if I had one :)

I can't speak for everyone but I think there is an appeal from the inner spirit to God without a clear picture. He is felt around us and guides us when we most need Him.

Language / spotykac/poznawac [6]

Think of spotykać of being like the present continuous in English. I am meeting my friend. Not in the sense of a continuous action we are doing now but more a fixed arrangement.

It contains perfective and imperfective when you introduce spotkać.

Life / Importance of Religion in Poland [187]

You don't answer simple questions and that's that. I wasn't looking for a thesis, just a few insights from you. You are just as I surmised, a label slapper :) 'You are a Catholic, son, remember that'. 'Yes, mother, thank you' :)

Trolling up? Look, old threads can be highly refreshing after some of the nonsense that pops up. Besides, they were the originals and should be explored before similar new things emerge.

Well, call Jeremy Paxman pathological then. Sometimes you have to push for answers as some either prevaricate or do a monumental sidestep like you. Here,

you are like Michael Howard, LOL. This is hilarous and sums you up!!

Did you threaten to overrule him x14 I think :)

Real Estate / Relocating in Poland - what's the best area? [56]

Brags? States more like. I simply think that the blend of vocational/generic and academic is better than the elitist stuff put out by Oxbridge. That's OK, it's my job :)

I agree or I am in agreement :) I'm not fully aware of what you speak of but I'll try and follow. Maybe on the other thread?

Relocating in Poland, remember?? Wrocław is a cracking place! It's my favourite city so far in Poland. It just has more options than here in Gliwice.
