Language / WHY IS SATELITA MASCULINE? [25]

satelita is not the only masculine noun which ends with -a. there are plenty. you might as well wonder why all those other nouns are masculine. i'm really not sure why that is. cos men identified and named them?? lol. in the olden days other *cosmic* nouns such as planeta or asteroida well masculine in Polish as well. the Astronomical Association, or whatever they are called in Poland, recommend that satelita is used as a masculine noun.

i'll try to find out why, no joy with google polska so far...

Love / Woman 23, man 47 years old. What do you think about ? [162]

Woman 23, man 47 years old. What do you think

he could be your father, that's what i think. young women are often impressed with an older man who is financially and often emotionally stable. middle aged guys want to impress their mates they have a young bird hanging off their arm. no matter how youthul the guy seems, he's still almost half a century old, possibly on a rebound after a failed long term marriage or something like that, looking to build up his self esteem. there is a certain type of girls who are attracted to older men. was their father missing in their life? do they love their father so much that they wanna have a man who is just like him? why can't they pick a man who is just like their father but 20 yrs younger??? lol...

Language / WHY IS SATELITA MASCULINE? [25]

satelita as in satellite television is feminine
satelita as in satellite orbiting a planet, such as the Moon is masculine, probably to tell them two satellites apart

Are you seriously saying the Saturday School isn't a good thing ?

most students would agree on that one! lol mind you kids in Poland used to go to school Monday-Saturday some years ago (i'm pretty sure my Mom said she did)

Language / ssać - please conjugate [15]

common mistake

it looks like it in the case of ssam/ssę. i tested my friend from southern Poland and asked what was the 1st person singular of ssać and she said ssam as well. when i told her about ssę she said she's never heard about it lol. Polish is a funky language and even the natives get confused :)

very nice summary Miranda, are you taking over the pf omnibus now :P??

only this puzzled me a bit:

Forgotten but not forgiven
You know who you are.

but i suppose - as you say - they know who they are!

i've found an interesting article groups.google.com/group/pl.hum.polszczyzna/browse_thread/thread/7b76a438ffc94488/d7b1643c9f959d16 - ssę czy ssam? and even though ssę and so on is the version a dictionary will give you, people in Poland use ssam. i don't think i ever even used ssę ha ha. ssam, ssasz etc. are the commonly used versions which is quite funny considering they are supposed to be wrong.

Krzysztof is right here. I know this verb ;)

yeah right, didn't see you rush over here with the *proper* conjugation when the question was first asked. nobody else complained about it until Krzysztof did, then you pop up and say "i knew it". pffft.

I wish someone would explain to me this apparent fascination girls have to men in skirts. Is this interest just due to the mere novelty of it? The easy access? Some deep-seated perversion?

probably the novelty of it and that it's kinda cute, sexy and elegant at the same time... not for all obviously lol. shame you guys wear it only on special occassions! my bf looks ever so dashing in his kilt ;)

Life / Does Poland have an equivalent to Amazon.com? [18]

i think Empik have a website like that, but they've hardly got anything on stock, it's pretty pathetic lol... this looks ok filmoutlet.pl but it's in Polish. you can collect loyalty points as well.

Life / Does Poland have an equivalent to Amazon.com? [18]

i wish lol. unless they started a site like that recently and i haven't heard about it yet. there's always Allegro, but that's more like e-bay. there's loads of dvds in Polish i wanna get but sadly they hardly ever release anything good on dvd over there. i would be happy to pay for stuff instead of downloading it illegally...

Love / English girl. Do Polish men afraid to show their feelings or they are just not comfortable in UK? [84]

You are talking about some teenager there aren't you?

um no. it's a common thing that guys behave differently among other guys than they do when they're with their girlfriend. not all of them, but guys in their 20s (and of course their teens) very often do and you can't deny that.

I would expect someone, even if it was just once a month on pay-day, to take his girlfriend out somewhere.

that is what i asked, what exactly is the thread author talking about? going out to the movies, going out for dinner? or hitting the pubs and clubs and staying out all night? cos i don't know that many couples that go clubbing together, it always kinda seemed to me clubbing was best when you were single, or when your other half wasn't there, it's something you do with friends. but then that's me (and not like I'm up to no good when I'm out OK) lol

He's either married or got another girlfriend that doesn't know about you either.

oh yeah make the girl paranoid. the guy wants to spend time with his mates, they probably don't speak good English, the girl doesn't speak Polish, what's the fun in that? would be nice if he introduced her at least, but maybe he doesn't wanna get teased or he doesn't want them to upset her or make her feel left out. maybe he feels it's a bit early for that i dunno. it's difficult to please so many people at the same time. if anything, the thread author should have some me-time as well with her girlfriends, hit the shops or go down the pub when her bf is seeing his friends. men tend to prefer women who are independent and not needy or clingy.

maybe she's a guy...

and maybe you're a dog? gee your intelligence really shines through your comments doesn't it. forum leader PFFTTT.

Love / English girl. Do Polish men afraid to show their feelings or they are just not comfortable in UK? [84]

maybe i am just paronoid there is a problem with me !! would he be embarrassed to have english girlfriend???!!!

don't worry, i've been with my bf for nearly 3 yrs and only met 3 of his mates, and that was like once or twice - plus he is not Polish. it's not that he's trying to hide you from them, maybe he just doesn't want you to be around when they get together talking about some rubbish, swearing and being rude. guys tend to act differently and more 'macho' around each other, they can't sit there in front of their buddies and gaze into your eyes and lovingly stroke your hand ha ha, their mates would take the p*ss outta them for months to come! it's a sign of 'weakness', and other guys might get nasty or jealous. not all of your bf's friends will be as nice as he is, they often hang out with guys they don't really like that much so they always try to impress each other and be cool. that's what i have noticed anyway. as long as you are absolutely sure he is seing his mates, there is absolutely nothing wrong or unusual about it.

Love / English girl. Do Polish men afraid to show their feelings or they are just not comfortable in UK? [84]

it seems that even when he is drinking with his polish mates they stay at home, and although i have asked he has never invited me to join them!

it's a bloke thing, they usually dont bring their gf's along for a lads night in. and if you think about it you really don't wanna be there when they get together and start drinking and shouting in Polish all night, it's not fun to be there without understanding a word. my advice is to be more independent and not rely on him to entertain you so much, try go out with the girls or have a girly night in. everybody's different but a guy will always need some time alone with his buddies and you can't take that away from him.

some do and some don't. there are even British people out there who don't enjoy going clubbing you know lol. what sort of a night out do you have in mind, is it just the two of you going for a meal and a couple of drinks and a chat, just the two of you getting drunk out in town clubbing all night long, or meeting up with some friends and drinking with them? some guys (not just Polish) only like to go out and get drunk with their mates and maybe that's why he's avoiding the answer. most men don't like to see their woman drunk! if there's a bunch of you, people he knows and people you know, then maybe that will convince him to give it a go... it may also be a money issue, i know the drinks and taxis cost quite a lot. just ask him for an honest answer, he can't avoid the subject forever.

UK, Ireland / Cheap calls to the UK from Poland [30]

there is a phonecard, i think it's called telegrosik, but i really am not sure about the actual value for money in this case. as per usual, if you have internet access, good old skype is a brilliant option. they have some really good deals on unlimited calls to landlines in most of Europe (of course including Poland and UK), i pay £3.50 a month (you can cancel anytime as well) so i suppose it would work out about 15 zl a month. if you wanna call a mobile then i dunno about any deals like that from Polish mobile operators, at least i'm not aware of any, but you can always buy skype credit and call mobiles in UK with that.

edit: i remember ages ago Telekomunikacja Polska (the main Polish landline operator) had adverts about cheap or even free calls to landlines abroad, i know landline operators in UK provide deals like that, cheap or free evening and weekend calls to Europe, have a good look on google or ask around. Alternatively you can try other Polish landline providers such as Tele2, MNI or Datacom and ask them if they have any deals for calls abroad.
