Work / Greek Speaking Jobs in Poland [25]

what exactly are you drinking in the morning in order to wake up????

Listerine. It tastes nice but makes your stomach hurt. I've noticed that my breath is sweeter, though. There's something about 'gurgling'(?) on the bottle but I can't read it as I don't keep my reading glasses in the bathroom.

Travel / Would I have to worry about organ thieves when traveling into Poland alone? [36]

Good point. Portable keyboards are much easier to snatch than the full-size church type. Cheery, you should consider bringing a friend (or friends if you are toting anything bigger than a Farfiza or electric baby grand). Though a little antiquated, the excellent 'Stylophone' could be a solution if you just need to keep in touch with your music while travelling. In any case, get insurance.

I have heard that unsupervised children are more at risk than adults

Your information is correct. You clearly have top class sources. Unsupervised children are undoubtedly more at risk than adults.

there was an incident in an Auchan marketplace

When the bad guys were arrested and being dragged away one of them laughed hysterically and shouted, "We came to kidnap a child for its organs." His accomplice pleaded with the arresting officers, saying, "We tried IKEA but the car park was full of dinky media types, and Biedronka...fooo!"

Language / 24 hour time telling in Poland vs. other countries [29]

So, when a Polish student invites his English or American friend to a party at 17.00, what are his chances of being understood?

100%, as long as the foreigner has used some form of public transport in their lives.
If the Polish student says 17 O'clock, that might raise a smile.

Work / 7000 PLN net per month in Krakow. How much i can save? [21]

If anyone knows a better case for reforming the laws on the availability of firearms in the U.S. than the above post, please let me know.

Grubas. Are you Polish or American?
What do you contribute to either the U.S. or Poland. Apart, that is, from having fantasies about taking on the armed forces and winning.

Come back to your Poland and do something useful. Or is it that living with your parents and their magic fridge is easier than working for a living?

You can not build anything on rotten fundation,it has to be burned with fire and cleaned first.

Sounds like something from a KKK pamphlet.

we Polish patriots will build our Poland

You are so full of siht I can smell you from here.

Poland would be much better off without you ******* foraigners

I'm a foreigner living in Poland. I work hard, pay my taxes, contribute in other ways I won't go into, and obey the laws (except speeding). What do you do to help build a greater Poland?

Law / Setting up small business in Poland? [191]

What will your school be called? I'd like to know because friends of mine in Gdańsk are looking for a school and it would be useful to know where not to send them.

Life / Question Of Religious Beliefs That Could Differ in Poland [33]

independent and critical thinking armed with knowledge

What like yours?
quote Ironside: you are a dumb dick

lax minds

Referring to me? I may have my faults but teaching two hundred university students per week keeps me pretty sharp.

Life / Graffiti problem in Poland [38]

I wouldn't mind it so much if it displayed any talent, but most of it is just ugly. On a bus stop near my place some knuckle dragger scrawled 'White Power' a while ago. Nice to see today that someone has changed it to 'White Rower' and has made that nasty sign into one of the wheels of a bike.

Evil is very real, whether you call it Satan or anything else...

As ten minutes surfing on PF will demonstrate.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

Białystok, of course! Great place, and on the up. No polar bears walking up Lipowa, contrary to popular belief, and a state-of-the-art opera house opening soon.

Life / How many ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN POLISH in Poland? [40]

If you knew what you were talking about, you'd know that Eastern Orthodoxy is more 'Catholic' than Roman Catholicism, and that the RC's are in fact a breakaway Church or schism.

Life / How many ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN POLISH in Poland? [40]

my family are polish and we are orthodox NOT all polish people are catholic!

Where I live, in eastern Poland, Orthodox and Roman Catholics live peacefully side by side. They inter-marry with very few problems; they have friends who attend churches of the other denomination without any antagonism for the most part; they work together without asking or caring which type of catholicism their colleague belongs to.

Having said that, there are companies which tend to employ only, or mostly, RC or Orthodox, but this is largely the result of the culture of filling job positions by 'connections': family, Church, or friends.

There are very, very few militant bigots on either side of what I hesitate to call 'the divide', as the divide doesn't really exist.

almax states a fact. I work with, and live with, Orthodox Poles who are 100% part of Polish society. Their denomination is a cultural element in their lives, and not a political one.

When I think of orthodox christianity in Poland I think of forced russification, language and religion (under tsar) Maybe not fair but that's my connotation.

Time for a well-deserved holiday (from whatever it is you do) in eastern Poland.

whats it like to be orthodox in a catholic country ?

It's not a catholic or Catholic country. It's a secular democracy, not a theocracy.

No, not all Poles are Catholics. I'm a Lutheran.

I thought you were an American. Whatever.

Food / Food hygiene in Poland [60]

I'd rather not. As a student I worked in a restaurant. Since then I have always been extremely courteous to waiters.

Food / Food hygiene in Poland [60]

During some periods of PRL a mandatory appetizer was added to every beer

Sounds like the old Spanish law that gave rise to Tapas. I think the stuff I've had in Spain was probably better than the joys of the waiting room you describe.

Food hygene standards in Poland were on higher level before we joined EU.

Thanks for the laugh.

Love / Pregnant in Wroclaw, need a good doctor [11]

Get her to buy three home pregnancy testing kits from the chemist's/pharmacy, preferably different makes. If they all come out positive, she's pregnant.

Work / Teaching English in Krakow for graduates? [7]

I'm currently working for 5 schools and I'm still turning down a lot of work

You must spend an awful lot of time running around town teaching , not to mention the children's entertaining. How do you find time to keep your paperwork, e.g. tax and ZUS in order?

people like myself are pretty much a 'dime-a-dozen'.

Not so, Chris. Backpackers and chancers are a dime a dozen but educated, qualified people should be able to find work. If I were you, I'd look elsewhere, though. Kraków is full! It's a bad time of year anyway. The jobs were filled in September, and Christmas is coming.

Try other, smaller cities if you really want to come soon, although I'd wait until next year. Register and PM me if you want more detailed info. Or post an e-mail address.

USA, Canada / Thanksgiving Day in the USA - was there some Polish on the table? [13]

Hence the "thanks" to them that the settlers didn't starve. That's the "classic" story anyway. Probably bull$hit like nearly everything else in this life.

Apparently not. There's a terrific chapter on American food in Bill Bryson's 'Made in America'. Recommended.

As some of you know, she is Filipina but what you don't know is that she loves Polish food (and so do her relatives)!

My sis-in-law is a Filipina. Her cooking is absolutely fabulous. As fond as I am of Polish food, I can't help but suspect that your in-laws are being (typically) polite! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

As far as I know, Pożegnanie z Afryką has it.

Thanks. Haven't been to PzA for ages. My local branch always has Mazurek on offer. Perfect with coffee.

Anyone tried Kopi Luwak? Is there anywhere I can have just one cup? I don't want to spend a fortune on something I might not like. After all, it's processed by cats.

Food / Hawaiian Kona coffee to buy in Warsaw [12]

my favorite coffee is Hawaiian Kona coffee. I was wondering if it was available (or anything like it) was available here in Warsaw

Don't know about Hawaiian Kona, but you might like Biedronka's own brand. It's ok if you sugar it up and add loads of UHT.
