News / Polish Independence Day March in Warsaw. Is it going to be the biggest march yet? [1530]

they represent a deep and nagging concern, if not the fear, that their race is in decline on so many levels.

Well...I get it...but why do they have to repeat that all the time? It get's tiresome...

personally, I will not be affected by any of that.

Nobody here will be. That is the future world of the young...and the majority of them seem totally okay with that, so...*shrugs*

The only reason Germany IS the most civilized, enlightened country she's ever been is because of people such as Angela Merkel who fly the banner of tolerance

You really do like her, don't you Lyzko! :)

Well....right now Germany is a most respected country. The best, most civilized country we Germans ever had. Our basic law doesn't rely on religion or old traditions though. We must have done alot right. That supports my opinion that traditions can and often must be supplanted by a set of laws. Rules grounded in universal human rights.

Keep playing with philosophy and dreaming of the ideal world...

They do change but it's a slow, evolutionary process that cannot be "ordered" with one document.

It can be ordered, of course.

How long would you had waited to break with tradition to give women equal rights to men? Till all the men all agree???

But remove the framework and you're left with nothing.

You are left with a set of laws! :)

You don't see nothing admirable in rebelling against tyranny of the state.

I don't see anything admirable in rebelling for the rebelling sake...resistance against tyranny is something totally different.

And in Poland people would rebel and disobey the state if it drifts away too far from a natural law.

What do you mean with the natural law? The main natural law is the one of the survival of the fittest after all...

I'm simply saying that the set of rules must be grounded in a traditional moral principles of a society. If it isn't, it simply won't last.

I disagree...societies change, with them the moral principles. Yesterday was the german 100 years anniversary fo women's voting rights. If tradition would be everything they still would have to walk a few steps behind their "masters".

Also it is widely accepted that it is amoral and unethical to rob, rape or kill, but it happens. It's a kind of human tradition! Without laws to punish such behaviours it would be gruesome on our streets.

I don't see anything nice and admirable in a such a chaotic society where people disobey for fun just to show what rebels they are......juveniles do that.

I fear we are still stuck with #1, as are IMHO all current human societies...

There are to many in every society who just don't care..or are opposed about for example equal laws for women or people of different religion or color...the human rights are not at all "imprinted" on mankind at this point and most probably won't be anytime soon.

That's makes the laws so important. Without these laws enforced by the ruling body you would get the darkest middle age again...and chaos, where only the strongest ones rules.

I don't think you will find anyone here disagreeing with that...

The first rule of the german Basic Law is:

Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar.

Human dignity shall inviolable.

Some others are:

Every person shall have the right to free development of his personality insofar as he does not violate the rights of others or offend against the constitutional order or the moral law.

Every person shall have the right to life and physical integrity. Freedom of the person shall be inviolable.

All persons shall be equal before the law.

Men and women shall have equal rights

No person shall be favoured or disfavoured because of sex, parentage, race, language, homeland and origin, faith, or religious or political opinions. No person shall be disfavoured because of disability.

I think these are some good ones for starters....laws deeply rooted in ethics and morals!

It is propaganda.

Well...

The following projects shall be developed under PESCO:

data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-6393-2018-INIT/en/pdf

The ideas run around for a long time...but it needed the Brexit and one President Trump to set things really in motion!

Who is gonna pay for it?

The EU is gonna pay for it of course.

Strasbourg, 13 June 2018

A €13 billion European Defence Fund will provide the financial firepower for cross-border investments in state-of-the-art and fully interoperable technology and equipment in areas such as encrypted software and drone technology.

europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-18-4121_en.htm

In addition, the High Representative, with the support of the Commission, is proposing today a new €10.5 billion European Peace Facility.....

That's for starters...the budget for 2021-2027

And of course one common army is so much cheaper for the members than 27 fully staffed armies. We can have the most modern, best army in the world for only a fraction of the costs all these armies cost now.

Trump isn't helping things along,

Oh but he is! Just not in the way he wanted to...

Against all warnings he couldn't let that special dog sleeping and threw a tantrum about a few percent. In the future history books they will write whole chapters about that monumental short sighted stupidity and how he helped to found the EU army and in the later consequence the dissolution of NATO.

Germany should be all Europe needs to defend itself after it grows some balls and teeth.

Nah...I don't think Europe could stomach our "balls and teeth" for a third time.

The next time the Germans will be a part of a common army, not "the" army.

A madwoman, don't you mean? What would Eastern Germany be now if it were a separate state?

She wasn't in the least concerned about the Eastern Germans, frankly she gave a sh'it about their welfare...she spoke purely from a british point of view. Two Germany's are preferable than one unified one. (The more the weaker)

Many little european countries are much easier to handle for Britain than one unified EU power bloc.

Divide and conquer

Exactly!

That's all the reason one needs to support the EU and a closer integration...IMHO.

Not scared, just disappointed at the lack of imagination and sad at the loss of languages and cultural distinctiveness

Man, if it aren't the muslims now it is a stronger union which will destroy us...our cultures must be really some fragile snowflakes...especially the stereotypes of them.

(I wonder how the Scots or the Walisians retained their language and antics)

*takes hat*

Put "breakup of the USA" or "Will the USA break up" into google and you'll find lots of stuff...

Thought games, nothing else. The same kind of thought games of a break up which are around since the EU's inception too...

Similarly, what's good for Germany isn't necessarily good for Europe either...

Germany would be a region lik any other....as a (hopefully) economical still strong region it would support the weaker regions, even more so as now.

Again, what are you so scared of?

She also used to promote the concept of East Germany remaining a separate state rather than being swallowed by West Germany.

She was a smartie. She saw Europe from the power point of the UK. Britain was always the happiest when Europe was disunified. "Perfidious Albion" meant more or less that Britain would always build an alliance against the one country in mainland Europe which threatened to become to powerful, to keep it's own position at the top.

That kind of politics doesn't work anymore with a unified Europe...hence the late joining ("When you can't destroy it, join it").

But what's good for Britain isn't good for Europe.

....and many analysts assume that it's going to break up into several separate countries in the coming decades

Do you have a link?

I don't think there will ever be a United States of Europe in the same form as the United States of America for many, many reasons.

We can make it better...but for now it's the best example we have. The US achieved something that Europe didn't...bringing Europeans together (which at home still hate each others guts), to leave their old quarrels behind like an old skin and build something new and extremely successful.
