News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

tyranny of the majority

- Exactly that is how democracy works. Sorry. I'm usually not even in favour of this, but just this one time it works for me...

but private spaces shouldn't

I see your point, really do, but now, I can happily visit your bar! Ain't that a good news! ;)

Fair enough, then allow bar owners to convert their places into private smoking clubs. They already had that choice in the past, and that was legislated away...

I have nothing against it, I think. But doing this, you'll loosse clients too. And in the long run (it's just the firs week of the ban) you will find out not much has changed, and there will not be a drop-down to most places. Is your place in the basement by the way?

No one forces you to go to private establishments where the owners allow smoking, why in god's name would you go to a place that had an environment that you didn't like?

- But smokers invade also the public space too, not only private. This law hopefully will get things to normal. So maybe smokers should form some smoking clubs, and stop whining.

History / The Greatest King of Poland? [117]

Yep, Harry, you're right now;)))
There was even a madman who worked in Polish parliament for establishing Jesus as a formal king of Poland. Just found his name: Artur Górski, poseł PiS.

Actually it is less than 70% of Poles who do not smoke (source) but I guess it is too much to expect whiny non-smokers to tell the truth about anything connected to them getting their own way. And as to your 'point' 65% of Poles do not own cars but they still have to adjust their lives to the selfish minority who insist on giving everybody else cancer.

Ok. I read your source, thanks. Here is an excerpt from yoursource:
"33.5% of adult men (5.2 million) and 21.0 of adult women (3.5 million) smoked tobacco every day"
- That gives 5.2+3.5 = 8.7 mln people. That's what? Bit over 22 % of society.

adults what they can and can not do on their own property. Can I come round to your flat, shiit in the corner and then tell you that you can't complain about it?

No, as a matter of fact you cannot. But allow me to continue your beautiful metaphor: It's the smokers who come to a place, shite and then demand that everyone smells it. That's bad enough. But it's not all: their "shite" is releasing poison (smoke, fumes) and they don't seem to mind that the majority does inhale their s hitty fumes! The only ones that make this s hit are the smokers, not other way round.

About the property, adults and their ownership: I'd agree, only that these are special private places open to... public. And up until now there was "toxic" smoke in them. End of story. Smokers - outside, fresh air - inside.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

did you not just write in your initial response to Krysia, "I always get my groceries packed"?????

Someone clearly having a bad day today. I am sad to explain this minor thing, but here it is for you: I only meant that I go to those little shops that pack it for me while I ask for tomatoes, carrots, cabbage etc. But some other don't always pack. And by writing usually I implied that it happened to me to buy groceries also at the places where they DON'T pack them. Hence my knowledge where they do and where they don't. Maybe I get it packed because I'm usually there with a document bag I carry from work and they see I am missing a free hand;). Don't catch me by the word. I get veggies packed. I wrote also about places they don't do it. WTF is your problem.

not go to dangerous places

Pubs being dangerous places? I thought I could relax in them. Sorry, Harry, not my idea of leisure.

ruin bar culture

WTF?! About 80% of Polish society does not smoke. Should it adjust to the addicted, biased minority?!
Harry

With an attitude like yours, I'm not surprised that you get beaten up by smokers so often.

Typical attitude of an addict. Are you one, Harry?

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

then i'd love to know where you shop.
not only do stores in wroclaw not pack your groceries for you but you have to pay for the bags.

Right now - Krakow, at the vegetable market next to Hala Targowa. Fresh groceries from local suppliers (usually) and usually they hand me the bag with all I ask for. Just try those "targowisko" - I'm sure there are some in Wroclaw.

Also at Bomi and Alma you don't pay for the bags, neither in Auchan and in the latter they actually put your stuff in bags! Surprising, as it's a hypermarket, while Alma and Bomi are delis and they don't do it.

that would be impossible.

Than's an obvious joke. I never intended to. Shocking!!! :D

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

My horses sleep outside at night!!!!

- Isn't this a climate difference rather than culture? Culture of.. what?! Horses' sleeping habits or farmers negligence;)?!

Cars have air-conditioning!!!

- I could never happen in Poland as there is no air conditioning, especially in cars. Maybe in next 100 years or so.

Hot water is on the left!!!

- Gee. I would't know how to use it!

Everybody stops at a stop sign even when there is nothing coming!!!

I do that too. So does most drivers. Am I by mistake an American? Should I apply for US passport already? Is this unique American feature?

In Polish grocery stores you have to bag your own groceries, in the US they ask "paper or plastic". Another shocking experience!!!!

I always get my groceries packed (in plastic unfortunately, but always). Go shopping somewhere else.

his sisters were crying, his mother, his nieces

- I am truely shocked. I think I need to cry now too.

Culture Shock!!!!

4-way stop signs!!

nobody steals the mail!!!

he doesn't get it!!!

fences in yards!!!

!!!!

!!!

!!!

!!!

church!!!!

You are my official shocking (i.e. culture-shocking!!!) Master of Punctuation and Shocking.

Haha, I just realized that Poland built a giant statue of a Jew :) That should lay all the claims of antisemitism to rest :)

- Bull's eye! Hahahaha

PS, note to self, life ambition, build giant Cthulu statute.

- have a look at my post 266, Cthulhu could've been there already! ;)

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

And lastly my alligiance is to The United States of America and no-other.

LMAO! With that attitude how come you're not holding USA passport? You... missed that opportunity?! And now you have to be here, in this

USA, Canada / Not everyone that lives or comes from America is RICH! [300]

Is it just me or does every polish person think that if you live or come from the states that you must be very comfortable financially?

I think it's just you actually. The country's going down the tube slowly and the real unemployment is bigger than in Poland now, not to mention other aspects... But for some people without deeper knowledge the obvious advantages overwhelm the less visible (but major) disadvantages - like the loan situation you described.

Law / Threatened to serve papers if I don't remove a review about a renting company in Poland [62]

Ok, sorry to put it this way, but aren't you exaggerating a bit? I just don't think that something bad could happen to ypu or your wife because of a review. But maybe I'm wrong. Are the car-rental people real thugs? Well, if they are, do not hesitate to go to the police with every proof you have. You can contact a district police officer (responsible for your particular district) and get him interested in this situation. They may say "we'll look into it" (and do v.little) but I wouldn't assume it granted. My experiences with public officers etc. have always been quite positive. So just to feel safer (as it all comes down to this actually) - go to the police, at least they'll know about this situation and would react appropirately if anything more happened.

regulation of anything that the masses think is bad, even if they're not taking part in it

Hey, that's democracy! I didn't invent democracy, I'll just take advantage of it for once in my life;)
Also, if you don't take part in sth, you sometimes decide on this (e.g. you don't practise pedophilia, but you object to other people that do so, right? - sorry for that raw example, but it shows the same rule)

No one is forcing you into the pub. Unless you can disprove that, you're just complaining about the noise from the airplanes being too loud because you bought a cheap apartment in the flightpath of an airport.

Your argument is correct, but lacks a broader perspective. I must incline to Ashleys mind's argumenting;)
I'll repeat the opinion that a private place like a bar becomes somewhat public when it opens to customers. Hence the name pub (after all, in full it's public house).

Life / Poznan or Wroclaw - which city is more foreigner-friendly? [18]

Is it not famous for being pretty

Not really, if you consider architectonic mish-mash and modern buildings entwined with old ones. The market square, however, is remarkable, I admit.

you can clearly see that it was wrecked during WWII.

and from then onwards, also having paved transit roads (not beautiful but old and very uneven) in the very centre of Wroclaw is too much for me, hence my opinion.

highway bypass of Wroclaw

yes, I can't wait for that.

things you have a limited idea about

- Again, you can't know that. I read the sources and I was raised in Christian community. Probably you are not better qualified than me to talk about it unless you're a monk or something. You express your ideas, I express mine. But you cannot do it without insulting people, bluntly. That shows lack of perspective and trust me (I have PhD on that!) - it also shows that you are on your crusade (same as jihad actually, just a different word) to proove anyone else that they are wrong if they don't follow your ways. My role is just to maintain balance. And maybe remind you that there are no things one should get upset so much about.

nah fuk dat let's build a giant Jesus with no windows

LMAO:) Let's make an acronym out of that: GJWNW

If you want you and your comrades can build bigger monument, Che Guevara for example.

- I'm far from comrade attitude, boy. Where did you get this impression. Just because I try to make a rather unbiased fun of ridiculously weird thing like this doesn't prove a thin about my political beliefs - but your invectives just did show that YOU are biased as much as you can be.

Check how many adverts got your favorite szmatławiec Gazeta Wyborcza

- I don't like it either.
Here comes the usual stuf: if anyone dares to say anything about RCC etc. then they must be: Jews, read Gazeta Wyborcza, be communists, like Tusk, collaborate with the Russians etc. Way to go my friend! That's the best way to put labels on people. If that is the only way you cope with the external world then I truely pity you [but to be exact I don't really care, I just wanted to be polite] :D

will of people

- certainly some peoples' will. With interest. And lack of reason maybe.

voluntarily are willing to pay for it

- Oh, wait a minute, doesn't every Pole despite their faith pay in taxes for The RCC? I know they do. Free will, huh? And tax reliefs and repossesions - this is about free will and volunteering?

In case of Stalin statue it was tyrannically imposed on the people by a tyrannical state and they had to pay for it whichever they liked it or not!

- no difference here then if you put it this way.

The fact that you cannot see it make you an biased idiot!

I will not be disparaged by a person with a limited sense of humor.

But seriously, what's the pattern? How do they chose the character to make for a monument? And why was it not Robin Hood or maybe Janosik? That would be helluva fun and major attraction - not only for pilgrims but for kids too. As for now the gigantic scarecrow is disturbing even for adults.

No, no, no, I see the difference now!
That's why I put for you two real-life photos of Jesus in the act [above].
I shamely admit my mistake that Jesus H Christ looks nothing like Stalin. I glanced from afar. I hope you are satisfied now.

cheers,

Anyway, for me it's still a private property rights issue.

- Agreed, with the exception that such a private place is open to public and hence some public issues occur (like safety and fire extinguishers for instance, emergency exits, food inspection etc. whatever) with smoking problem being one of the issues that unfortunately needs regulating by law.

Holland is reversing the ban for small pubs.

Holland is veery liberal in terms of what is allowed by law;)
