USA, Canada / Changing plane in the USA without USA Visa [13]

Technically not as you're not entering the US. The part of the Airport she will switch planes in is international territory, only when she leaves that, she will have to show her passport and a visa.

History / Christian Crusaders and Teutonic order in Poland [11]

After the civil war has ended, and we, the indiginous population of Europe, hopefully, have won.

My my my, you are a very scared little boy, are you?

And how is this different to the Christian Crusaders?

Teutonic Order were such nice guys, weren't they?

Of course they weren't a pinch better. But according to Dariusz that's ok as they belong to "US" and the Islam belongs to "THEM". And "WE" are always the good guys and "THEY" are always the bad guys. At least in Dariusz' world.

>^..^<

News / US shouldn't interfere in Polish election (Polish-American Advocacy Initiative) [60]

Well the Poles were latecomers

James Polk: (1845-1849)

Martin van Buren: (1837-1841)

Theodore Roosevelt: (1901-1909)

Franklin Delano Roosevelt: (1933-1945)

polish parades!

That's sth of the last few decades and doesn't mean a thing. Minneapolis has a Dutch parade and yet the city is predominantly Scandinavian. To be a van Buren, Vanderbilt, Van Coevoorden (Vancouver) or Roosevelt in the US means you're nearly nobility over there. And I'm not even talking about Wallstreet (Waal Straat), Broadway (Bredeweg) and Coney Island (Konijnen eiland).

we were taking them out

Indeed :)

Anyway, it was fun, but I'm off to bed now.

News / US shouldn't interfere in Polish election (Polish-American Advocacy Initiative) [60]

Hm...Wiki says following:

Polk, the first of ten children, was born in a farmhouse (possibly a "log" cabin)[1] in what is now Pineville, North Carolina in Mecklenburg County on November 2, 1795, just outside of Charlotte. His father, Samuel Polk, was a slaveholder, successful farmer and surveyor of Scots-Irish descent. His mother, Jane Polk (née Knox), was a descendant of a brother of the Scottish religious reformer John Knox.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Polk

So it seems like he's in fact Scottish/Irish. But let's for sport's sake assume that he is of Polish descent, that would only be one against 3 Presidents of Dutch descent. By the way I seem to remember that Polk is a common Scottish surname.

Anyhow, NYC is in fact the most "Dutch" city of the US and they cherish and celebrate it quite regularily.

Roosevelt Dutch

Oh yes. And guess what, there have been two presidents of the US by that name.

Roosevelt is an Anglicized form of the Dutch surname 'Van Rosevelt,' or 'Van Rosenvelt', meaning 'from field of roses.'[2] Although some use an Anglicized spelling pronunciation of /ˈruːzəvɛlt/, that is, with the vowels of rue and felt, Franklin used [ˈroʊzəvəlt], with the vowel of the English rose.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_D._Roosevelt

Some more from the same link:

One of the wealthiest and oldest families in New York State, the Roosevelts distinguished themselves in areas other than politics. Franklin's first cousin, Ellen Roosevelt, was the 1890 U.S. Open Championships women's singles and doubles tennis champion and is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Roosevelts had been in New York since the mid-17th century. Roosevelt was born into a wealthy family of Dutch origin; by the 19th century, the family had grown in wealth, power and influence from the profits of several businesses including hardware and plate-glass importing

from this:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Roosevelt

Edit:

There was also a Martin van Buren, also president of the US...That makes already 3 Presidents of the US...

More funfacts: did you know that the NYC flag is based upon the old Dutch flag?

News / US shouldn't interfere in Polish election (Polish-American Advocacy Initiative) [60]

When it was a tiny village called Manhattan, then Poles took over and look where it is today?:)

See, you don't know anything about NY's history. Everybody knows that the Dutch founded NY and most of the buroughs of that city derived their names from originally Dutch names.

Want a nice statistic as to how many Dutch were mayors vs how many Poles i'm pretty sure its on their site? Also current council doesnt have a single Dutchman but it does have two Poles.

That's funny, as when I look on the NY city counsil website, I don't see any Polish sounding surname...Perhaps Karen Koslowitz could be of distant Polish descent, but it says nowhere that she is Polish.

council.nyc.gov/html/members/members.shtml

On the other hand, "Jimmy van Bramen" and "Daniel Dromm" sound pretty Dutch, eh? And how about Roosevelt, Vanderbilt...All Dutch names as Dutch can be. Our crown prince went to NYC last summer to celebrate 400 years of Dutch ties with NYC. Poles do not enter until about 1850...

Poles have been in NY city council continously for the past 100 years y'know while Dutch were busy beating up Jews and selling soap in the docks market

Did you know that NY used to be called New Amsterdam? Guess who founded that city? :)

Edit: and as a little extra it's nice to know that the Dutch have always been part of the ruling elite in NYC...

I know a lot about Polonia since 21 members of my family live there and my uncle is the president of the second largest polonia association in NY and 8th largest such association in USA

What do they do? Get together every month, dance around a tree and drink Polish beer while listening to polka music?

USA, Canada / Polonian or Polish food in America better? [26]

pickled cucumbers

Never understood why ppl buy that. It's about the easiest thing to make: just take a cucumber, peel it and grate it, drop a cup vinegar to it, two or three tbl spoons sugar, a little pepper and there you go. Done in 5 minutes. Even before I learned that this was a "Polish Speciality", my grandmother and mother used to make it and I guess it's just a European dish, not particularily Polish.

Bought a pot of "Polish Salade" yesterday. It was good and tasted exactly like we in NL call "Meat Salade". Just goes to show that Dutch, German and Polish food is really not that different from eachother. But that's why I buy stuff there regularly. You have to keep an eagle's eye on the "best before"-date, but if that date is ok, you're good to go.

So what is the fuss? Who in PL cares about what some ppl in America who's great- great- great-granparents happen to emigrate from Poland think about the Polish elections? I mean, I wouldn't care what an American of Dutch descent would think about the recent elections in NL...

They don't pay tax and see PL (and the rest of Europe for that matter) mainly as an open air museum. Who cares what they think...

Love / Polish men what is the worst thing a girl can do upon first impression? [360]

maybe that is why I am still single

Is it over with that guy you ask about if the two of you would make good looking babies?

And tell me, what's so bad about a guy who can cook and wash his own clothes? I have plenty of gf's I just don't want to live together with them. So we have kind of "on-off" relationships. This brings along that I live alone and since I think it's nonsense to hire a maid to do the work, it brings along that you have to cook, clean and wash your clothes yourself and there is nothing wrong with being self-sufficient.

As for the topic: I already stated that I like intelligent, stylish and classy women. There is nothing that annoys me more during a first date then that I have to explain every other thing that I'm saying. However, I never break off a date unless it really gets awkward because it would be very impolite even though you know you're not gonna see eachother again. I only broke off a date once or twice and that was because we didn't have anything to say to eachother and if we had to say sth to eachother we completely disagreed on it.

As evidenced in these forums, obviously a lot more than you (do).

That would be the first truly funny remark you ever made. I'm sure a lot here would disagree with you. But keep telling yourself that you have an adult approach to women and how successful you are with them.

Love / Polish men what is the worst thing a girl can do upon first impression? [360]

A man can be effeminate (see MareGaea) and be self-reliant

What the hell do you know? I think I'm more self conscious and secure than you are. Self conscious and secure men don't need all that macho BS you're coming up with. But then again, I think you're just creating an image of how you would like to be, not what you truly are. And that was insult #21 you threw in my direction. It's time I start to return the favour.

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

When people have nothing or very little to lose, the crime rate soars. I think a lot of Poles found themselves in that situation a couple decades ago. Which is also why a lot of Brits do not like Poles from what i understand. Poverty, and all that goes with it.

What are you talking about?

For sure if most blacks drove bmw's (not just the drug dealers), the poles would most likely run after them with flowers.

You just can't help being a racist, can't you?

Life / Dutch bicycles repair shop in Warsaw [16]

The wheelfork twisted after I jumped a road curb down while braking

Well, you shouldn't do that anyway :)

Here's a link. Gazelle bicycles seem to be very popular in Poland though. Many of my Polish friends were telling me that they had a Gazelle bike at home and how they would love to have one here in IRE.

gazellebicycles.us

Edit: the older models look a bit cumbersome, but they last for 40 years or more...Much longer than those thin and light bikes nowadays.

I have to correct you on that part. He just wrote his imaginairy repy to poles who say things like that. He's not a troll, I have met Poles exactly the same.

Love / Polish girls, how are they when they are in love? [86]

See my edits, I've found out by now :)

I don't specifically like Polish girls. Not really, actually. It just so happened that I got my first PL gf about 2,5-3 years ago and it was like having a gf in the 50's NL, if you know what I mean. See description above what happened to the 2nd one.

You mean blow up dolls?

Don't reflect your own poor lovelife on others, southern.
