News / Heil-Hitlering Korwin-Mikke in European Parliament [29]

Can you perhaps outline the disadvantages of a common ticketing system?

JKM is the worst sort of populist - he's even worse than Kaczyński for doing stupid stuff to make the headlines!

Law / EU citizen - Register in Poland - Amount of a bank account [8]

Unless it's changed, there's no minimum amount and in any case the OP has the right to live in Poland without any conditions.

From what I know, the requirement is slightly different - there is no minimum amount, but you have to be able to support yourself without using public funding. In practice, it seems that they apply the same rules to EU citizens as non-EU citizens in terms of disposable income.

You don't need to register at all if you're an EU citizen - they can't force you, nor can they make you leave.

There is still theoretically a requirement to do so, but there are no punishments for not doing so. Having said that, you can't obtain a Polish driving licence without being registered for instance.

Law / Just got my permanent resident permit to live in Poland :) [46]

Therefore it is not necessary to fill the pit out.

I would ask for a ruling on the matter if I were you. It's the first time I've heard that someone that only receives interest is exempt from filling out the PIT. The other thing is that I'm not quite certain that the Urzad Wojewodzki will accept a mere letter from the bank as proof of income.

News / Prime Minister of Poland, Ewa Kopacz, shops at.... Biedronka? [20]

The meat I bought there was always fresh nor any member of my family had any issues with their meat. Maybe you should try putting your meat to the fridge after you buy it?

It's a pretty recent thing, maybe in the last 6-12 months or so. It's quite strange, because they always used to have to have decent products. Their own brand stuff is still excellent, though.

It's not only the food, but also the staff. It seems that they've gone away from the old idea of being a bit more expensive but being better to trying to compete with Lidl and Carrefour for having the worst and sulkiest staff.

If it wasn't for those two things, I'd shop there far more regularly. It's still excellent for premium products though.

Maybe this is just also bait for PiS? I remember how Kaczynski stumbled badly after insulting Tusk for shopping at Biedronka, and maybe this is just PO hoping that lightning will strike twice? Szydło doesn't appear to be too media savvy, and any stupid comments about Ewa Kopacz shopping there will certainly hurt PiS.

Unfortunately, it's suffering quite badly with quality at the minute. They've got huge problems with meat in particular - to the point where I won't buy meat there because it's a lottery as to whether it's actually fresh or not.

Sorry, for me it looks demagogy.

It might not just be about prices, remember - they're everywhere, and I prefer Biedronka to other shops found locally. I'd do all my shopping in Auchan, but the nearest one is about 25 minutes drive away. Carrefour is disgusting, and Tesco can be wildly hit or miss. Biedronka at least has some sort of consistent quality to it when it comes to basic food stuff.

Maybe Biedronka is just the closest place to where she lives?

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

The old slippery slope nonsense. It's like the scene in the Irish comedy Father Ted where a man has his whistle stolen and a local woman is speculating 'Where will it all end Father, the next thing is we'll have pimps and hoes and the pimps usin' crack to control the hoes and then drive by shootin's in the night. I'm goin' home now Father to lock meself in the basement until they catch that fella'.

I suppose it's quiet season in politics, so there's nothing else to do but shout about homosexuals and how they're destroying Poland.

A lot of the middle classes shop there, it's really not much of a surprise. The PM salary isn't even that high - I remember being quite surprised as to just how little Tusk and Kaczyński actually had in the way of money.

History / Foreigners in Poland - 1980-1983 [9]

Thank you Steve!

Were you subject to any additional restrictions over and above what applied to the population?

History / Foreigners in Poland - 1980-1983 [9]

I'm doing some research at the minute into foreigners in Poland during the time of the PRL, and one thing that aroused my interest was the fate of foreigners that lived in the PRL during this time. While movement around Poland wasn't restricted in a similar way to the USSR, it seems that many foreigners were "invited" to leave after the declaration of martial law.

Does anyone know of any accounts of foreigners living here at that time?

I'm particularly interested in anyone from non-Warsaw Pact countries that may have been allowed to stay despite the clampdown.

Certainly, one thing that Poland should be proud of is that this thread has remained at the top of PF for weeks now. Obviously we've come a long way from the bad old days when such topics weren't even discussed, let alone accepted like in today's Poland.

I predict we'll see civil unions recognised within a few years, and gay marriage will be legalised within 15.

Law / Just got my permanent resident permit to live in Poland :) [46]

I only obtain income from my polish account banks on my deposits(interest payment)

Uh-oh. This will get you into trouble - you have an obligation to fill out the PIT as you've received income while being legally resident in Poland for tax purposes. Even if the calculations are very simple, you're still obliged to do so. I will tell you for a categorical fact that the tax office will question you when you try and apply for permanent residency as you'll need a tax certificate to do so.

Go to the Urzad Skarbowy and sort it out. Now.

He was expresing his oppositon to unified ticketing in the EU.

Unified ticketing for what?

If it's for train tickets, well... Korwin is an even bigger idiot than I thought.

Democratic Poland may but Christian Poland does not.

Fortunately, Polish citizens are obliged to follow her Constitution, which was democratically approved in a referendum.

Christian Poland can say what it wants, but as Polish citizens, they have certain obligations. If they don't like it, the door is there.

Work / Salary expectations in Poland [373]

Based upon my "experience", I believe no more than 3,000 ZL, which is very low considering how difficult it can be. Coming from Germany to Poland to make such kind of money does not make much sense to me.

It does depend on what part of Germany he's from. If he's from some economic backwater with no good qualifications, then it might actually be a good move. Certainly living on 3000zl in Poland would be far superior to sitting unemployed in Eisenhuttenstadt!

I'd be surprised if they would pay him/her even 4000zl net. 3000zl net is about as high as they're likely to go.

Law / I was born in Poland, moved to the US when I was 5 - Dual Citizenship Question [7]

If you held a Polish passport at some point, then you are without a shadow of a doubt.

Be careful, because it also means great responsibility. For instance - if you're caught driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol, you'll be treated solely as a Polish citizen. Even if you don't hold a Polish identity document, they can and will find you on the various databases - which means you won't get any help from the American government.

Law / Buying a car in Poland or Germany? [36]

Can't go wrong with Opel - a bit boring of course but if it's VFM and reliability you want then they fit the bill

Agreed. They're absolutely no-drama cars.

Law / I was born in Poland, moved to the US when I was 5 - Dual Citizenship Question [7]

Am I granted the same rights as residence in respect to healthcare.

Healthcare in Poland is based upon the insurance principle, which means that you need to have paid health insurance in order to get treated. There is no universal coverage based on being a citizen alone.

Or on the other hand, if I were to run into trouble with the law in Poland, would I be treated as a Polish resident or American?

Polish, if you've got Polish citizenship, which you have.

I have had such a hard time getting in touch with anyone at the Polish Consulate in NYC.

Should be easy enough to do in person in Poland. Just go to the passport office with your old passport and ask them how to renew it.

The New York consulate is staffed by idiots. Try Chicago.

Law / Just got my permanent resident permit to live in Poland :) [46]

I think the crucial thing is whether or not he's been submitting a yearly PIT or not. If he hasn't, then I can see them questioning whether or not he was actually resident here - or worse still, if he submits financial documents but there's no record of them with the Urzad Skarbowy.

In 2016 I'm going to ask for PR ,if I haven't worked during the last 5 years in Poland the administration won't grant to me the PR? It's ridiculous!!!!

They might, they might not. If you clearly aren't actually living here but rather working for long periods abroad, then they might take a dim view of it, particularly if the tax administration has no record of you. Are you submitting yearly tax returns in Poland?
