News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Opposition loses first election campaign legal joust
24.08.2011 12:49
A court in Warsaw has ruled that the opposition Law and Justice party must apologise for making false statements about the government's record, ahead of the 9 October election. Law and Justice must make apologise and give 10,000 zloty (2,500 euros) to charity.

The catalyst for the case was the slogan under which the Civic Platform (PO), the senior coalition partner, is running its campaign. The centre-right party is drumming up support under the banner: "Poland is being built" (Polska jest w budowie). However, conservative rival Law and Justice (PiS) responded at a press conference that Poland is not being built but, "Poland is in a mess" (Polska jest w balaganie), adding that some of the planned or current investments that the senior coalition partner was claiming credit for could be ascribed to the work of previous governments.

History / Has Poland ever participated in any big wars (except WW2)? [73]

Dr R

If you are really doing this for a university course you should do something like the 1938 Polish annexation of "Zaolzie" or the Polish involvement in the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, where the topic is sufficiently narrow to be meaningly covered in a project.

Don`t forget the 1919 War for Cieszyn Silesia, when the Czechs attacked southern Poland. :):):) To most people`s surprise, they won! :):):):):)

The result of the war was the new demarcation line, which expanded the territory controlled by Czechoslovakia.

=Midas]Polish history is pretty much one bloody war after another with a relatively peaceful period in the XVIth century.

Yes, we were attacked from all sides: ):):):)

Travel / Souvenirs in Krakow/Katowice? [15]

Hey, it is not a question to me, I am not a merchant, sorry. If I was, I would be selling souvenirs in Sukiennice, instead of my knowledge. :):):)

=DANERD]How much would say, the small sculptures of cars and chess sets cost? (for baby cousins and relatives respectively)

This is easier to find out:

Big set: 95 zl

Small one - 45

Travel / Souvenirs in Krakow/Katowice? [15]

I'm very interested in bringing nice amber back home,

What do you mean by nice amber? For some people it is a string of slightly polished amber beads for 50 zlotys, for others sophisticated silver- amber jewellery for a few hundred.

I took a lot of photos inside Sukiennice, you might want to have a look at all kinds of souvenirs available: Sukiennice

UK, Ireland / Polish Family stabbed to death in St Helier. [40]

The 30 year old Polish man is alleged to have stabbed to death his wife, his two children,

When does a man go crazy and kill his family?

When he learns that he isn`t the real father of his 2 children and his wife is pregnant with another man.....

His wife shouldn`t have told him about it during one of their numerous arguments, especially that she knew he was a depressive type. She only wanted to hurt him a little but in result it ended with a massacre.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

=Seanus]Let me ask you, I-S, grubas, MyMom and anyone else that is still pent-up about Lwów. Why does Poland work together with Ukraine as part of PolUkrBat?? Because they can understand each other and are really very similar. Why deny that?

Ironside and his pack are the so called 5th Column. They pretend they are still Poles and imagine they know what is good/better for Poland. Sadly, they lost the grip long ago..... In result, with their crazy views, they are the traitors of the Polish cause.

Don`t you think they work for foreign services whose aim is to provoke conflicts in this region? :):):):)

UK, Ireland / I need help!! (problems with my Polish coworkers) [41]

=Emmaneedshelp]Im a girl lol :-)

Sheet! I thought you are a lost boy that`s why I told you to bang them.

But, as a woman, can`t you bang them anyway?

=rozumiemnic]pawian obviously I am a fascist, I am English ..;))

As a Pole, I am wary of any suggestions of fascism or communism. :):):)

Do you know that Polish prisoners in Nazi camps were not allowed to speak Polish and they even had to count the blows in German during beating? When they made a mistake, the beating was restarted again and again.

Banning the Polish language, no matter if it is faking England or frigging Greenland, is pure fascism to me.

=Emmaneedshelp]They bang things in the kitchen & make me feel uneasy.

Bang them, too.

=rozumiemnic]I think you should bring up the language thing at your disciplinary hearing. fecks sake they are working in england.

Hey, that`s fascism!!

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

Absolutely different circumstances and people ........you are posting nonsense Sean.

Not quite. Setting apart some obvious differences, they had one thing in common - they all resorted to terror and violence in their fight for independence.

=MyMom]Military conflict is just one solution and, judging by how our boy scouts dealt with professional Ukrainian soldiers back in 1918, I reckon it would be a piece of cake :)
Better method would be to pull off "Albanians & Kosovo" - just settle in Lwów in large numbers and after a few years - declare independence :)

OK. You, Ironside, grubas and your 10 followers can go and try to deal with pro Ukrainian soldiers. :):):):)

Real Estate / How bad was it? '' a 'luxury' apartment with electricity and heating" [21]

Come on, there are other ways of teaching vocabulary. I have worked with about 40 English textbooks so far and none had a text about Mr Smith who lives in a luxury apartment with electricity and heating.

Electricity is mentioned and even stressed in the text about Queen Mary`s Doll House and such.

Was it really that bad in the 70s and 80s when that textbook may have been written?

Blocks of flats with central heating, electricity, hot and cold water and flushed toilets were already built in 1950s.

The text which put stress on such things was weird, indeed.

UK, Ireland / Poles in England / English in Poland crime [25]

UK thugs don`t commit crimes in Poland. Neither do they seek hiding in Poland.
I once translated for the Krakow police and the only British cases were drunk soccer fans (my God, what kind of English they spoke?) or hotel guests who demolished their rooms. After paying a fine they left Poland without any criminal record.

Life / Have many Poles had enough of one another? [198]

Your customer is your gold, just like my students are mine. Without them, I'd have to change direction.

Yeah, the wild idealists with their heads in the sand. Clients? Why that's just reality that obstructs my pursuit of utopia ;0 ;)

Oosp, Seanus, are you getting sentimental or just maudlin? :):):):)

Study / Information Needed: Skarbek University, Warsaw. [57]

I have a strange feeling I was involved in a similar thread some time ago. Sort of Dejavu? Errors in Matrix?

No, impossible.

I will gladly help you.

Wow, there is really sth that is called Skarbek University in Warsaw. Very funny name, never heard it before. :)

I will tell you sincerely, judging by the name, it is not too serious. But I may be wrong.

I visit the main municipal office from time to time. I must say those clerks in Krakow are very polite. The only problem is queues because there isn`t enough staff. Budget cuts. But when you finally get to the counter, you receive an angelic service.

History / Chance of Lwów once again became coming part of Poland [344]

MediaWatch : there are still Poles living in Kazachstan, Ukraine, Russia.

Yes:

We could also get those from Brazil and Argentina, who are often impoverished and would gladly come here.

Exactly.

Pic

Some of the economic emigrants from USA, Germany and UK would probably want to settle in the regained territories as well.

Sure.

Season in Poland

Those regained areas would quickly become the cultural center of Poland.

Definitely. Especially artistic tapestries:

USA, Canada / Polish person in America (firing a gun for the first time) [18]

Interesting that society says it's ok for you to bring a life into the world and raise him contrary to the army's psych tests.

Unfortunately, the society doesn`t organize tests for parents. Army tests have nothing to do with parenthood.

Love / Don't want others to join us at a table - is it normal for Polish girls to get angry? [161]

=Midas]Ignore her completely. I mean, look the other way when she walks by. That's the only chance of "another shot" you've got at the moment with her type of personality.
Still, my advice is to ditch her as she's clearly a "Polish Princess" and will end up costing you a lot more than she's worth.

Exactly.

However, we might be wrong. She is just checking him and his balls out. That was the case with my beloved wife. She tried to dominate me just to try out my character. When I resisted firmly, she gave up and today we are a happy couple with me taking most important decisions and her wisely controlling my taking.

Nope. When in a firing range, e.g., during holidays, I always let my sons shoot but myself, I abstain from it.
I prefer to be careful with guns.
I just know I can turn really aggressive when someone pisses me off, so I know that my being at a possession of a gun in such moments would cause major manslaughter. I prefer to rely on my physical assets, much safer.

I didn`t get drafted to the army when it was my time in 1990s because of negative psychological tests which I didn`t pass.

polish language compulsory as i dont know a word of it ?

but English as well.

I wrote:

It means I don`t doubt there is such a university.

What I meant was that I never heard of it and its name sounds funny.

I think you should check the ranking of universities in Poland:
