Flights can be costly when you pay for 2 of them.

News / Poles and rest of us needs strong Poland [49]

Strengths are often used to counter threats, Crow. Where do you see the threat to Poland? It has secured its borders, enhanced its security network and has been enjoying new-found prosperity. Contrast that with the position in WWII and you have a very different picture.

Life / What would YOU do to make life in poland better?? [72]

More staff in key areas. Hospital workers run around like headless chickens, especially those that work in the registration area. This is unacceptable and is just about cost cutting. Oh, and a little more flexibility. It's WAY too procedural. I'm aware of the need for procedures, of course, but am also aware of reality.

Work / Is it normal for companies/schools in Poland to be rude? [116]

There is a certain level of acceptable abruptness here. This aspect of the culture irritates me as I don't want the irritation of others around me. They are just out to make money and they should try and mask that more.

Life / Reactions to death in Poland [4]

That's not what I would shake sb's hand for, sorry. I'd shake hands after a match, to congratulate or to welcome.

A nice reaction? You are mad, Vars!

Life / Who's Leaving Poland? [138]

Well, it seems like part of my stay is an endurance test. The way some things are handled here go right against my principles and the greater part of me misses my family a lot. Too much of Polish life is too routine without any spontaneity and rule bound. Recently, I have become acutely aware of it and, frankly, it bites.

I guess my judgment has been impaired by the heat and recent calamitous experiences with people who can't see past their own noses here. It's too uptight a society for me and, in summer, the vibe should be more laid back.

My wife is aware of my feelings and the sacrifice I have made for her but she did the same for me in reverse. She came back from England to be with me so I'll be sticking it out for some time yet.

Love / Polish Girl & Me...Is She Interested? [57]

1) No, most Polish men don't have the means by which to finance such a lavish lifestyle as hers. They are expected to take her out once in a while and maybe buy her flowers but nothing extravagant. Polish guys would tell her where to go.

2) She is draining your wallet and will likely scarper in due course. There are many hard-nosed people here in Poland that won't think twice about milking you. They won't even think about it, they'll just do it. There are many nice types here but they are harder to find.

3) Some do, some don't. Americans tend to get around more and that can be attractive for girls.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Quite right! You go to a foreign land and you need to be prepared to go the extra mile to get things right. Polish is the official language here so foreigners have to get accustomed to it.

Love / Why do Polish women prefer foreigners for boyfriends and husbands? [418]

Maybe I'm mistaken, Midas, but I think you posted in Croatian before. I could be confusing you with sb else.

Maybe Polish women like different humour to return to. After a day working in amongst their own, it may be refreshing to chat with sb with a different perspective on the day. My environment is vastly different from hers so we have sth to speak about.

News / Why are Czechs more effective than Poles and Poland? [116]

Yeah but have you lived in Poland? Getting sth things done here is awkward when you have old hags from communist times being far from helpful. However, there is hope and I have been lucky enough to come across helpful souls, whether it be in a hospital, insurance agency or tax office. Still, the attitude and efficiency has to improve. There is potential but they have to give the heave-ho to old biddies that are just taking up space. I can imagine the Czechs being more effective than such types though don't tar all administrative workers with the same brush. Poland just needs to offload excess baggage and get sharper people in those jobs.

I know :( The Mods will sweep it off and get it back on track. Too many sidetrackers these days and they need to be dealt with.

Mods, I'm trying to correct this aspect of my posting and I propose that suspensions should be dished out for

1) Creating a new thread not sufficiently different from a currently existing one

2) Persistent and blatant sidetracking

I've answered the thread. Cultural exchange too. My wife knows more about Scotland now and even speaks Doric reasonably. Hearing a Pole speak my dialect is odd :)

UK, Ireland / Not all is bad for Poles in Scotland! [167]

If they come over. They don't understand English so it may be hard for them if they are not escorted. The problem is that we would be staying for longer than them. My folks don't have the space to put us all up.

Life / HOW MANY CHINESE LIVING IN POLAND? [29]

To reiterate what has already been said, there are many Vietnamese but not Chinese. There are a few Japanese here too due to international business.

I dunno if they would have time to venture a bit further afield. The Granite City isn't exactly the most alluring of places for people. Deeside is not too far away. I used to cycle out that way a lot. There are some castles in the NE too :)

UK, Ireland / Not all is bad for Poles in Scotland! [167]

Oh, I am much better today, thanks. I was at my wife's parents' place today. I hope they come to Scotland in October to see a few new things. I think they'd be interested in having a look around. It would involve a heck of a lot of translation if they came to see my parents but it would be worth it.

Hmm...it would seem that way :) Not all is bad for Poles in Scotland, LOL. That does make me laugh. Like Scotland was a prison camp where they were sent for a life of drudgery and pain. It might help some stop smoking as we introduced a ban back in March 2006. Also, it will help their English and maybe allow them to broaden their options in the event of a return to their heartland.
