UK, Ireland / POLISH CITIZENS FOUND DEAD IN UK... [36]

Remembers me the case of the poor polish woman raped and badly beaten

I wonder why. There are very few similarities between the cases.

Odd that the threads are merged since the cases are different. Maybe amend the thread title?

UK, Ireland / POLISH CITIZENS FOUND DEAD IN UK... [36]

Merged: Polish woman found dead in suitcase

A very sad story:

A young woman might still have been alive when she was stuffed into a suitcase and thrown into a city canal, a court heard.
The body of Marta Ligman , 23, was found in the case floating in the Grand Union Canal in Little Venice in north west London 10 days after it had been dumped.
Prosecutor Tim Cray said the victim, a delicatessen shop assistant, had been badly beaten

UK, Ireland / Why do UK people look down on us? Maybe because plenty of Polish people work in the sex and cleaning industry? [51]

I remember reading here about a Polish person trying to apply for an office job thru some work agency only to be given directions to their division dealing with menial jobs as soon as they learned he was Polish.

Yes, that was my friend and I was in there with him. To be fair, his clothing and appearance suggested industrial and there were immediate jobs in that section but not in the other.

Life / Can I sell my used clothes in Poland? [21]

Sure. That's why the rate of volunteering is the lowest in the EU.

Yes, that was an EU-wide survey. There is however a relatively small amount of volunteering there, and if Shizuka would like to leave clothes in Poland and help a good cause, the Sue Ryder Shop on ul. Bagatela is the best bet. There's another Sue Ryder shop in Warsaw, but I can confirm that the Bagatela one does take clothes.

They also take English language books.

Another possibility is Ukraiński Świat on the corner of ul Nowy Świat and ul. Świętokrzyska. They help refugees from Ukraine and would certainly find someone who would appreciate then.

News / Don't read "Gazeta Wyborcza" Polish newspaper -- wPolityce.pl [83]

Did the praise and applause go to Merkel's head

I doubt it, somehow.

there is absolute truth known only to the Supreme Being.

Perhaps yes. Very eschatological, but we won't know the whole story until it's all over.

Or perhaps a realistic analysis. You may not like the fact that not everyone shares your political views - you may even loathe it that people choose to read a newspaper that presents an outlook different to your own, but, po3, I doubt that even you would claim the existence of an absolute political 'truth'.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Europe has been protecting the child raper.

France and Poland have. If he set foot in Britain, he'd be put straight back on a plane to California.

35 years later

That's another issue. Some countries have a statute of limitations.

Read the decision of the court on the extradition request.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Yup a whopping 42 days jon.

That was a matter to be dealt with at the time, rather than 35 years later. Though yes, the sentence was exceptionally lenient.

I'm assuming the results would have been known to the judge and maybe that's why he was possibly about to reneg on the plea bargain...

Very possible, though a lot had to do apparently with a district attorney who was coming up for re-election.

Life / Can I sell my used clothes in Poland? [21]

I live in Lublin

That's a bit too far from the Sue Ryder shop, however there are two national charities WOŚP (not religious) and Caritas (religious) in Lublin. I'm sure either would be very grateful to you if you gave them the clothes.

Another possibility is just to fold them neatly and put them in a box outside any apartment building when you leave. They certainly won't be wasted.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

It would be extremely embarrassing, Ziemowit.

There's no reason for him to come to Poland, the Polish government has no role role whatsoever in extraditing him for a crime committed elsewhere - that is a matter for the Americans and he is now a very old man, so the proble, will not be around for ever.

That's the theory, kpc21. In reality, 99% of what goes in there is unusable so the contents aren't even sorted (officially anyway). It all goes straight to be shredded for industrial use and sold by the ton.

Hence the Sue Ryder shop being a much better choice.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

Ports have always been, wild, unroly, wide-open places full of brawling drunken sailors, tarts, blackmarketeersm, gambling dens and bordellos

You must have been to more interesting parts of Gdansk than I ever have.

Nevertheless, it's long been a forward looking place with a high level of education and first class cultural activity.

I wonder what the turnout was there for this year's election. Unfortunately it was high in Podlasie.
