Nah...Slavs have roundish heads...not so long, quadratic skulls like germanics!

There is proof Copernicus was NOT German. He did not unconditionally obey, follow orders or march to the tune ordered by the supreme authorities - the Roman Catholic Church. That's what Germans do best. Well organized machines.

There is proof he WAS German: Exceptionally smart with scientific talent and precision skills...:)

(And I bet he was good at football too)

You can do better than that can't you BB? After all your arguing, you leave it down to some facial reconstruction, which in any event, doesn't look entirely Germanic to me either. DNA will solve it.

You should start to read better fili....no DNA testings to compare...he had no kids!

PS: And arguing makes not much sense anyway, it goes like that:

His mom was a german, Barbara Watzenrode....he is still polish

The town where he was born was german till shortly before his birth...See? Full blooded Pole!

His father was probably german too....hence the original name Kopperlingk....he is still polish

He visited german schools and wrote only in latin and german ...bah, still polish

He had a sig in every manuscript which proves his nationality...quack, he supported Poland against the T.O., that shows clearly he was Polish, basta!

There is no real discussion when all arguments are ignored!

Interesting, because they recently found a body which they believe is Copernicus'. They are now trying to find some other deceased relatives of Copernicus to make sure that it is him, and then they can do a DNA test. Until then, neither Poles or Germans will give in.

No children!

But they could reconstruct his face (looks mightily german to me):

i think that discussion is pointless here, because there is not a Pole who would agree with BB that Kopernik was German...

The same as you will find Germans very surprised about this polish claim to german Kopernikus!

Maybe our two countries are just not "relaxed" enough yet to share him!

And the rest of the world knows he's Polish.

Kopernikus also hadn't a polish name and he made is nationality cristal clear (if one wants to read his books that is)!

but we've got a few and leave them alone... or you wanna claim them too...?

And still he wrote this under every of his famous books (for Poles to find):

not to mention the facts that he was born into a GERMAN family, spoke GERMAN and visited GERMAN schools and that his uncle was the famous bishop Lucas Watzenrode...you never heard of that in school, right?

I'm sorry, but there is a bit of a different in forcibly being occupied and having regulations on who go's in and out, and someone who is born within Polands boundaries and has the freedom to go to which ever country or land he chooses.

Poles also could leave Prussia...it wasn't a jail you know....

The only argument FOR Kopernikus' polishness is his political allegiance, that is not much, sorry!

And I don't buy that "the whole world knows he is polish" argument!

First, it's wrong and second every bio I read acknowledges that he is at least of mixed heritage!

And lastly...why all that fuss with the space program if the whole world knows it should say "Copernicus" and not "Kopernikus"...right? Right!

Because there wasn't a need to "germanize" a German.
And on the other hand I'm sure most Germans were surprised to read the polish claims
on him....I remember I was!

What I don't get is this polish claim of sole representation! Why this total denying of his german roots? We could share him, why don't you want to???

1. Copernicus was born on Polish land (at the time yes, and the boarders change often, yes, FACT, but it was Polish at the time)

You would be the first one actually to bring such, since even the name suggests that also his father was german!

He several times signed as his name Kopperlingk, possibly because his father's family business in the city of Thorn/Torun was copper and therefore the Low German Kopper (High German Kupfer) and the -lingk ending indicated someone who dabbled in copper. It has been the custom of German people to take on the occupations or the town names as last names.

There are no extant letters written by Copernicus in Polish - those which have survived are all in Latin or German. However, Latin was at the time the international language of scholars and those letters in German might have been addressed to German-speakers and therefore for this specific purpose written in that language. The official languages of the Holy Roman Empire were Latin and German. (The Spanish Habsburg emperor(s) had to sign an agreement, to only use Latin or German in official HRE business.)

Kopernikus has definitely German roots and probably polish too...but he wasn't a germanized Pole, he was a GERMAN, grown up with German culture, educated at German schools. That is the background to his later scientific success!

I can't understand how you Poles want to claim him as he was born in German territory (which later changed hands as this happened so often), into a German family, spoke probably never polish in his life (his works are in Latin and germane)...

We could surely share him but this polish claim that he was all-polish, absolutely denying and ignoring his GERMAN HERITAGE p*isses me off!
