I wonder why you people aren't claiming him too...

PS: I would like to know more about his "polish noble ancestors"...I can't seem to find anything about them!

Well...since you steadily ignore them I have to hammer them into you.
You ignore his german family, his german mother, his german mother tongue, even that he described himself as german and signed his manuscripts that way.

The only argument going for you (or so you think) is his political allegiance as he supported Poland against the Teutonic Order...but sorry...that doesn't make him polish!

So yes, it seems I have to repeat the facts again and again...

What an argument...his real family name was Kopperlingk, he latinized his name later to Kopernikus as it was custom at that time...the Poles made it to Kopernik...

So who cares if you can find Koperniks in Poland?

He several times signed as his name Kopperlingk, possibly because his father's family business in the city of Thorn/Torun was copper and therefore the Low German Kopper (High German Kupfer) and the -lingk ending indicated someone who dabbled in copper. It has been the custom of German people to take on the occupations or the town names as last names.

He was born when Toruń was part of Poland. Poland was fighting against Teutonic Order.

Poland was once partitioned and millions of Poles lived within Prussia/the german Empire...did that make them to Germans???

I fully agree...that's why I always stated we should share him...but it's the Poles with
all their "outrage" claiming him solely for Poland, denying his german roots and heritage!

I'm sorry to hear that it's news for you that Germans consider Kopernikus as German but then I wonder why you (and seemingly your teachers) totally ignore his german heritage, his german roots.

How can you lay sole claim on a man who was at best mixed but most probably fully German? Who called himself "prussian german mathematician"?

Außerdem war sein Vater Schöffe in Thorn, was damals Deutschen vorbehalten war.

His father worked in Thorn also as a lay assessor (jury man)...a position only for Germans at that time...
If that is true it would make Kopernikus a full German!

I found Kopernik in Warsaw. It is normal Polish name.

Did you find "Kopperlingk" to?

(I don't doubt that "Kopernik" is polish...that's why nobody else calls him that way but Kopernikus/or the anglicized Copernicus)

Why you avoid his Polish father Polish education Polish language and service in Polish army against Germans.

I never avoided that, quite the contrary:

About his father nearly nothing is known and most are just guesses...there are strong signs leaning to a german father but there is no proof.

And I repeatedly answered your only "real" argument for his "polishness" that political allegiance doesn't change your racial or cultural heritage!

You on the other hand are steadily ignoring what Kopernikus himself said about his nationality..for him it never was a question, even as he supported Poland against the Teutonic Order!

His mother was Barbara Watzenrode, after his (unknown to us) father died he was brought up by the family of Bishop Lukas Watzenrode....german was his mother tongue, he visited german schools, wrote his books in latin and german and used a very explicit signature in all of his works:

Ok BB, that's a good point. But look at Julekcg's dill-version. It sounds plausible as well.
So "the battle for Copernik" Ger-Pol 1 - 1 so far.

Where is the reason for "dill"??? I don't understand...

ending -nik is Polish.

Sure...-nik is polish, that's why his family name was probably Kopplerlingk and later became Kopernikus!

Only Poles call him the polish version of Kopernik....

That's also the main reason why the space program will stay called "Kopernikus" and not the polish-only version of "Kopernik"...

nik is typically slavic suffix. :) The base reminds me of "copper" only... :)) (metal) and doesn't look slavic.

He was student in Cracow he spoken Polish. He fought in Polish army against Germans.

My mother has German name and she consider herself Polish and I do so. If I had to choose. Only Poland !!! I am Polish. Like general Władysław Anders.
