News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

It leaves a nasty taste, doesn't it. Though enough people buy (or used to buy) records by Jerry Lee Lewis, not to mention the Rolling Stones. With Polanski, it's the perception that he's fled justice that adds to it.

I agree, a show trial would add nothing, and after all, the victim has said she wants an end to all this.

News / Poland's PIS go back to their old ways [194]

I think the terms "Liberal" and "Conservative" are much more fitting. A liberal person believes you should be able to do anything as long as it doesn't hurt others. A conservative person likes to tell others how to behave, what to think and what to do. I'm quite liberal.

Yes, it's all about authoritarianism.

Study / For a student in Poland - how do they do internship? [26]

I don't pretend to be an expert on this topic

That's very wise, since you are certainly not one, and you are wrong here.. As I say, I don't bother to read your ranting posts. In Poland there is an oversupply of doctors with people who are qualified as doctors doing work that it is not necessary for a doctor to do.

@InPolska is very right - a good knowledge of the Polish language is essential for an internship in Poland and they are very hard to find due to oversupply.

I strongly suggest that the OP looks elsewhere in Europe, in countries that unlike Poland follow the western healthcare model. Internships do exist, however language skills are a requirement and the convenience of the path to qualification is still very much dependent on the respective specialisation.

Study / For a student in Poland - how do they do internship? [26]

There you go again, lastworditis and in danger of going off topic. There's a few big problems with the bits of your post that I'd be bothered to read.

You ignore the fact that all your posts are from within Poland and lack objectivity - many tasks in Poland that are often done by doctors simply do not need to be. X-ray testing, Chiropody, taking blood pressure, parentology, midwifery.

And I'd prefer it if you don't call me a 'holocaust denier', unless you want a letter from a lawyer.

Hard to know how any of your posts in this thread help the OP...

It's always struck me as absolutely unfair that we pay for 17-18 years of education for someone, only for a foreign country to take full advantage of it.

Absolutely, unless such a scheme is very reciprocal. There are ways of recouping by fees and of course it contributes to a country's cultural impact.

Medical internships are a little different, especially in centres of excellence which Poland isn't.

Still too many doctors in Poland though, doing the jobs of other healthcare professionals, whatever out 'cut n paste' TL:DR poster Paulina thinks.

News / PKP buys Alstrom Pendolino trains for € 665 million [60]

I still like the old fashioned trains with net curtains in the dining car.

Still cheap in Poland though, whether faster or slower and better if the pendolinos don't go too fast round the bends.

Life / Chiropodists in Warsaw [6]

It looks that way. Basically too many roles performed by doctors where that is unnecessary. It doesn't seem worth going to an orthopaedic surgeon for a toenail problem.

News / Most Poles believe current Sejm (Parliament) in Poland will be better [64]

Well, when you start to wonder things, usually it means that exactly the opposit

There speaks someone who is clueless about Poland's political landscape.

That party is entirely Kaczynski's show. Szydlo is only there because his advisors believe that he is unelectable. History repeating itself. He'll fire the puppet premier, take office himself and the government will once again fail.

Not a foot surgeon - a chiropodist. A different profession, not a doctor or nurse but closer to the latter. They can do complicated things and simple ones. It seems odd to go to a doctor for a simple procedure.

Only a petty-minded, fault-finding nitpicker would even ask

Well, Po3, it's a question many have been asking, including The Economist and The Financial Times. You conveniently forget that Jaro did exactly that before with holders of that role.

And yes, he may well do it again. There was no possibility of him standing, being electorally toxic, however the speed at which his fellow conspiracy theorist Macierewicz reappeared bodes very ill indeed.

Life / Indian community in Poland [43]

Raszyn in the south of the city is where the highest concentration of Indian people live. It's a pleasant area and there is at least one Indian food shop.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Absolutely. It's a matter for the courts not mob rule.

When politicians (look at Tom Watson in the UK) comment about such cases it's nearly always more about them than the good of society.

Work / Any Speed School of English in Poland? [54]

Not really. It's the name of a chain of language schools who use something (actually very old-fashioned) called the Callan Method. Popular in Poland but not really anywhere else because it was once heavily marketed there. And is cheap.

Based on pre-war ideas about learning English, basically shout and repeat.

News / Why has the US dollar reached almost 3.99 zł in Poland? [56]

In the entire world this year the USD gained a lot of Power.

And very good too, for those who get paid in $$.

Not so good for American exporters and the knock-on that has for their domestic figures. The changes this week in the zloty aren't to do with that. More about commodities, production and the China market.

Language / Message from Polish speaking friend (in English) translation help [13]

I'm 50-50 on this Looker but now tending to your translation. I was looking at his words rather than the quote so had misread the original post. Looking at the bit that says 'her' right, could make all the difference.

It would be obvious if the lady was actually speaking, but an email or whatever is less clear. As a native speaker of English (who speaks only Polish at home) I'm thinking back to the times in the past when I used to speak English with Poles. So many times, I've heard people say 'you have right' or even 'you have a right' when they mean 'you are right. But this lady - well, 'her' could make all the difference. But might not...

Language / Message from Polish speaking friend (in English) translation help [13]

That's what i feared :(

Don't fear it too much, I misread the message and maybe Looker's version is closer. In Polish 'is right' (ma racje) and 'has a right' (ma prawo) are different but looking back I see that the writer said

I think that is her right

and she really could mean either.
Don't be too pessimistic - I can imagine a Polish lady saying it in Polish, and the second certainly rings true.

News / Why has the US dollar reached almost 3.99 zł in Poland? [56]

There's a lot of mess in the markets at the moment, not just a Poland thing. Mostly to do with the China slowdown and low oil, steel and sugar prices.

I doubt the election has had much effect one way or another. Shares do drop when a government is elected who are perceived as less business-friendly than their rival, however the markets generally rally again over the month unless there's instability and like 'em or not, the transition has been stable.

Given that a Wall Street Crash was predicted by some for last month, things have only actually been slightly bad. Rolls Royce shares plummeted today, down 20% last time I could bear to look due to a profit warning. Hopefully they've rallied a bit. Sod's Law that I bought a lot (by my standards) when they appointed a new CEO a while ago.

Where are the four horsemen of the Apocalypse when you need them...
