News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Only 60 years later??? He should know about it, don't you think? It's nearly the same time frame!

And what is the facts you "stubborn" Poles bring all he time to prove his Polishness?
That he made once a political choice against the Teutonic Order, that's all...as if that
says about his ethnic belonging!

What now? I brought alot of facts (his family, the languages he used)...you have???

Where do you see here polish influence at all!

The original autograf, an intermediate between a rough copy and a fair copy, passed after Copernicus' death in 1543 to his friend Tiedemann Giese(1480-1550) and then to Georg Joachim Rheticus (1514-1574), Copernicus only pupil, who had used a copy to publish De revolutionibus in Nuremberg in 1543.
Rheticus took it to Leipzig and Cracow (1554 - 1574) and to Košice (Kaschau) where he died and left it to his pupil and colleague Valentin Otho(1545 - 1603) who took it to Heidelberg were Jakob Christmann (1554-1613) added his remark.

PS: I had family in Jauer! :)

de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikolaus_Kopernikus

But even this political decision doesn't mean that he is polish. Kopernikus (as his uncle Lukas Watzenrode) were on the side of the Preußischer Bund, who was against the Teutonic Order, it was more of a inner prussian civil war but a war between Germans and Poles!

de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preu%C3%9Fischer_Bund

He was even elected into several preußische Landtage...

You still think he was a Pole because....?

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Well he was from Thorn...do you see anybody denying that? What's your problem boy? To thick a head?
Millions of Germans lived for centuries in what became Poland after the wars...boundaries shifted, ethnics didn't.
Or the Polish ethnie should had stopped existing during the partitions! You know millions of Poles becoming Germans or Russians, right? Following your
logic nobody should have wanted independence or an own polish state as they became immediately all happy Germans and happy Russians...

And what about that???

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

He described himself as
PRUSSIAN GERMAN MATHEMATICIAN
Explain this if he was such a passionate Pole...:)
He lived under the polish crown, nobody forced him
to call himself german! :):):)

His uncle, the Bishop of Warmia although a Watzenrode had a fine German name like £ukasz.

Nope

Watzenrode was born in Thorn (Toruń) as the son of the trader Lucas Watzenrode the Elder (1400-1462). He studied at the universities of Kraków, Cologne, and Bologna.

When both his sister Barbara Koppernigk and her husband Nicolas had died around 1483, Lucas took care of their four children, Katharina, Barbara, Andreas and Nicolaus, who would become known as the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucas_Watzenrode_the_Younger

...nothing Polish about them! :)

BB, r u Silesian or pure German?

German!

leave him with his false statements...

Yeah, f'uck Copernicus...how dared he to call him self "German mathematician"!!!

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, inPrussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

God...maybe it's a polish thing to so absolutely deny and ignore facts! :):):)
(Not a good foundation for a scientist btw...)

Bratwurst Boy You're still at it, give it a rest will you.

He...you are funny!
It's not me keeping this thread alive! Whenever one of you keeps up with the stubborn notion that Kopernikus was a full blooded Pole I will post the evidence to the contrary...you better stop or we will do the dance still next summer! :):):)

Action speak louder than words, where in your sick little mind did you get the idea that he considered himself to be German?

*snicker* Truth hurts, doesn' it!

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

LOL :)

Oh and tell me since when political leanings decide about heritage and ethnical belonging...should be really interesting! ROFL :):):)

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

I know Copernicus as "Copernicus" not as Kopernic or any other version, Polish or German.

"Copernicus" is the anglicized form of the latin "Kopernikus"("C" instead of "K"), whereas the Poles call him "Kopernik"...

He was writing that Torinensis = from Toruń

Yes, and he was right about that but where does he write that he is Polish???
My family stems from Silesia, Liegnitz, Breslau etc...didn't made them Polish!

Kopernik couldn't write in Polish - it was impossible. He was using languages all Poles were using in writing.

It was impossible for him as he probably never learned the language.
But he could had described himself as Pole in latin very well...but he didn't!
But he did write that:

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

In my opinion using of German version of his name is very wrong because you can't find Germans or Poles with such name. You can find people with name Kopernik or his latin name in most documents.

And I repeat again...it was custom at that time to latinize your surname to show your belonging to the "intelligentsia"
Kopernikus is the latinized form of Kopperlingk...so it doesn't matter one yota if you find others called Kopernik!

She had her reasons to choose Paris for working...but I don't think that made her French once she crossed the border!
Education and heritage aren't interchangeable with passports...Or else the family of Copernicus really would had become full Poles once the town Torn changed hands.

Even then...this town was called Torn and was officially German just a few years back before his birth. The town may have changed hands, the citizens not!

He made his nationality quite clear:

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

Show me where he writes "polish" or "polski" or something like that and you can convince me!

From his works which made them so famous...it's his signature!

The Copernicus manuscript book states: [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

If he had felt/been polish he would then now at last told it, don't you think?

Germans want to call EU project using German name but it doesn't exist in reality.

It's quite real:

google.com/search?hl=en&q=EU+project+Kopernikus&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

False he described himself as from Toruń.

Nope:

For there isn't a debate anymore actually as Kopernikus himself described his nationality quite clearly! But these stubborn Poles...:)

ur birthplace tends to dictate ur nationality.

Usually yes...but between Poland and Germany borders seem to fluctuate more than somewhere else...just a few years back and he would have been born in the German town of Torn.

He was named after his father who was Polish.

Well..we don't know it exactly...there is an indication that he was German too as we know that he held a position in the towns court which was at that time only open to Germans!

His family name was Kopperlingk, his mother was a born Watzenrode...

Most of the germans got expelled from Silesia after ww2, how come they didn't kick out your family too then?

You are new on this board, aren't you...

I read that German National Socialists also claimed that Copernicus was 'purely German'.

They got THAT one right...

then he must be also awful traitor of German nation. Right? :)

Erm...why?

There was a world of difference between a Saxon speaking Plattdeutsch and Bavarian up to 19th century.

There still is...:)

It may be interesting to note that authoritative encyclopaedias regard him as Polish.

Most encyclopedias speak about his city of birth who was in that moment polish...doesn't make the man polish though...

Maybe we should all go back to our roots and pass the peace pipe around for a while?

I just stopped smoking...but what the hell! :)

The past of different tribes which became part of Germany, may be considered as a heritage of German nation. However this doesn't make 'the Germans' out of those people, this is just how nationalist propaganda describe them.

Well...even Tacitus called them that way 2000 years back because they were so similiar to each other and clearly different to the Celts and the Gauls!

Tacitus Germania:
unrv.com/tacitus/tacitusgermania.php

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Istvaeones

And that was already written two millennias back but you know better of course...oooookaaaaay...:):):)

No we have different view on some issues than Germans. We are proud of it :)

Maybe you should just read and accept how Kopernikus described himself:

The Copernicus manuscript book states : [...] Nicolaus Copernicus Canon [in] Warmia, in Prussia Germaniae mathematician...(Nicolai Copernick Canonici Varmiensis, in Borussia Germaniae mathematici)

Why are you ignoring that?

What interests would that be, pray tell?

You know..let's count...it's about people who share the same:
language
customs
tradition
heritage
and even goals in not becoming subjugated and a tax-and slaves giving
province of the roman empire like their neighbours, the Gauls!

What do you think makes it different to any other nation?
Or more precisely WHAT are they lacking? In your opinion that is...

Well..for us it was one of the most important battles in our (GERMAN) history and one of the most important in Europe ever.
But then...you aren't a German, what would you know! :):):)

Actually since the Russians conquered Austria it should have been their spoil too...they were lucky that the allies preferred a neutral Austria cracked away from core Germany...so who cared about justice and punishment!

BB, do you want to say that Germany was united democratically? :)

Well...in Germany we have the saying "People voted with their feet"!
It doesn't get more democratic than that...

But tell me...why are you discarding the Battle of the Teutoburger Wald as a sign of clear national consciousness?

Arminius was educated as a roman officer, the loose, separate from each other living tribes should have only cared for their own...but they didn't....it was THEM against US!

What do you think that "US" meant for these people (which shared the same customs, the same language, the same culture)

Tell me please!

To be honest I think Kopernik is his original name

Well...you think many things but it's mostly crap anyway so...who cares...

and think what we need to do with this non-slavs in our country

Tell me...can't wait what you come up with? Expelling them again???

See you after weekend ...

Very true. And they still claim to be "the first victim of nazis" with a straight face.

It's the fault of the allies actually!

After WWI the victors separated Germany from Austria with the Treaty of Versailles and FORBADE every re-union...fearing a strong german empire again.
Well, that didn't sat well with the folks as everybody could see later with Hitler marching into Vienna with triumph and his troops being greeted with flowers.

After WWII they did it again but this time with giving the Austrians (who were really good Nazis) the way out with "You stay away from Germany and we abolish you of any guilt"...and it worked better.

But the reason for that was the same...to weaken Germany!

You should look for Kopperlingk...
Kopernikus is the latinized form for Kopperlingk...a family name for someone handling copper (Kupfer), as it was custom for german families to get their names by their professions.

And to latinize their name was fashion between the intelligentsia of that time...

...but we repeat now old arguments which are already answered and discussed during this thread as you very well know Lukasz. Don't be more the idiot than you need to be...

And how "national awareness" can be different is beyond me...either you have it or not!

I prefere Polish national awareness.

Well...you are a Pole! :):):)
