News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

more correctly termed as 'the South'

Even if the compass can suggest otherwise (where is Australia).

the developing nations

A term that seems ill suited to many poor countries that are not developing at all (is the Democratic Republic of Congo really developing?).

Second World

Some of the differences within the 'second world' seem to be pretty similar to the differences between the first and third worlds.

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

Some people probably carry a map of the world in their heads where anything outside their own locality is simply labelled 'There Be Dragons'.

Britians smoking ban was put in place so that

People can get shirty with you for smoking near a railway station and so bouncers can refuse re-entry to some dodgy club you left your mates and your jacket in. It also leaves pubs stinking of stale food, stale sweat and farts.

Of the houses and flats I have visited in Poland, there is not one (okay - out of about 5 in total) that doesn't put my own dwelling to shame. But then again, no hay on the floor, no back-scratching brushes on the walls and no salt-licks. (See Avatar for details).

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

Streets were cleaner, train system seemed to work better than UK. Higher standard of education etc

As soon as I got off the bus after returning to the UK from Poland, I felt as though I had entered a far more oppressive, unwelcoming, miserable country. Especially as the smoking ban had just come in. I sat outside the station, lit a cigarette, got told to move a couple more metres from the building. I just typed a lot more that I have self-edited for sanity's sake.

Answer is an obvious NO.

Love / My Polish wife doesn't want to move to the UK with me - what to do? [96]

When Poles move to the UK, many do not intend to stay for good, many stay with other Polish people. It is a much bigger step, as you know, to choose to move to another country for good. Being in a marriage may make things a little more difficult in some respects - you can't so eaily go out and meet people in a similar position to yourself.

As much as you'd prefer an English-speaking place, surely she would also prefer a Polish-speaking place, even if the language problem is a bigger one for you than it is for her. It looks as though someone will have to make a very big, noble gesture. Maybe it's because I have heard your tale and not hers, and that work is not a problem there for you, I'm inclined to suggest you stay where you are and work on it.

Time and effort are there for you to take.

And by the way, it's not cold all the time.

Travel / Just back from Krakow [120]

And you can just sense this without speaking to them or doing more than just considering them to be...

very strange and nasty people

Isn't Kraków a city rather than a town?

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

The best beer I ever drank in Poland is Carlsberg and Corona

But you had to duck to dodge an overhead knur.

Or at least how do you know they are from 'that town'?
What is 'that town', by the way?

Osioł's omnibus.

Some stuff happened this week on the forum. There were some people squabbling, a bit of name calling. There was even a bit of mateyness at times. People posted stuff about Poland and that... There were some translations, one or two new members. Someone visiting somewhere in America - that got a thread of its own. Some other stuff. You know.

The End.

Polish Forums omnibus

Those words fit the first line, but lucky me - I haven't had a TV for so long, I can't even remember more than the first line and a half of the Eastenders theme tune. I can still remember all of the Simpsons theme. I once tried to learn to play it on the mandolin, but it was just too tricky.

tong

Tong? As in half of a pair of tongs?
Thong sticking out, perhaps.

Okay - I shall read that as tongue.

edit: Now you've changed it, this post here seems somewhat irrelevant.
Shall I delete what I have typed here or not?

Just like the real thing, you wait ages and ages for it, but when it arrives it takes you to places you never expected to go. But unlike the real thing, only one turns up at a time (no-one else is mad enough).

I picture in my head a(n omni)bus with the words Polish and Forums emblazoned across the front.

Moaning about it for the last thirty-something years probably.

half replying to you and half making a point

Spot the semantic difference:

1 - who, in the way they moan about foreigners working in their country, resort to plain, simple racism

2 - foreigners working in their country, resort to plain, simple racism

Tornado1967, what's going on with that quote above? You're taking stuff I have said and making it look as though I was saying something very different.

if your talking about me then your a little wrong with that

I'm only accusing you of making the mistake of saying that complaining about anything will lead to you being called a racist. I'm sure you don't literally mean anything, but yes, there are people who have no argumentative power who resort to using words like 'racism' where it does not apply, but there are people who, in the way they moan about foreigners working in their country, resort to plain, simple racism.

if you don't like something in 2007 your a racist

No. If you make unqualified, derogatory remarks about foreigners or people of other ethnicities with no regard for human complexity, variety and decency.

Dont forget people,we had these problems before Poland joined the EU!!!

I think the British economy hasn't been doing as well as it is now for quite a long time.
There are many things wrong with the country, but finding solutions requires more effort than jumping on a bandwagon.

its a British trait,looking for a scapegoat

I blame to goat.

Genealogy / Polish Tatar People and Names. [8]

I think I worked with one for a couple of days. It suprised me when he said he was Polish because he just didn't look it. A few swear-words later, I was left in little doubt as to his Polishness.

Life / Reliable Weather Service In Poland? [25]

metcheck dot com might do it, but does anyone know how the weather will be?
I reckon forecasting has improved a lot since the days of weathermen with stick-on clouds.
Does anywhere in the world still have stick-on clouds (that sometimes fall off the map)?

Food / Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer! [71]

tried £omza before it tasted ok , a litte bitter though

I went to £omża and got £omża'd on £omża.
I normally drink bitter, so any bitterness was something I quite like.
There are about three different £omża brews. One called Export. I don't know where they are exporting it to, because unfortunately it's not to where I live.
