Travel / Driving through Poland and across Europe [17]

a mini journey to Chernobyl

What, like A long weekend in Fukushima?

I dont go abroad to go to capital cities as i believe they dont represent a country very well at all.

Very true. As you'll be coming east why not visit beautiful Białowieża and its surrounding forest?
The villages around Podlasie and well worth driving through.

Love / Confused about a Pole in the closet? [17]

rubbed his cheek against mine twice, when I tried to tell him something at a party

You're confused? HE LIKES YOU. Invite him out for a beer and see what happens, before he gets tired of dropping not so subtle hints.

History / Did Polish farmer Krzysztof Azninski chop his own head off? [36]

there was a report in the telegraph a few days ago about a uk man doing just that.

What? Cutting his head off, or damaging an artery in his neck? Not quite the same thing. There's something they call chainsaw kickback. Google it and you'll know what I meant by 'impossible'.

Life / Life in Lomza - Is it a cheap place to live? [9]

They have a website. As websites for Polish language schools go, the English is pretty good; just a few mistakes from what I could see. They even say 'training' and not 'trainings', which should tell you a lot. Dunno about the model, though.

History / Did Polish farmer Krzysztof Azninski chop his own head off? [36]

Impossible. It would have chewed up his neck a bit and then stopped. Chainsaws hate cutting anything other than wood. I've got one and I must say it's the best fun a guy can have with his clothes on, but cutting your own head off? Rural myth, albeit a funny one.

News / New road taxes in Poland? [13]

This will cost much more to administer and police than the revenue raised. A bit of lateral thinking would have been much better, e.g. allowing only a simple, biodegradable wooden cross.

Work / What is a 'HND' Business qualification in Poland? [42]

the University of Spunkbridge.

Hey, that's my alma mater you're talking about!

If you're over forty

40+VAT.
I'd really like to see a recently marked and graded A level paper. Is it possible?

Work / What is a 'HND' Business qualification in Poland? [42]

Though both qualifications are being degraded, year on year

I've been out of the UK education loop for decades, so perhaps you can tell me what my A grade A levels in English Language and Literature are worth now that these days they have A levels with stars.

Life / Does Poland have an equivalent to Amazon.com? [18]

They offer free shipping to Poland on orders over £24.

Do you get preferential treatment? I have to spend 30 quid min. Anyway, it's a good idea. They seem to send a lot of their stuff from a central warehouse in Germany. The last package I got took about four days and came by DHL. No complaints. btw woks are not hard to find here.

Food / Can I buy Christmas crackers in Gdansk? [15]

I found a 3.5kg leg of lamb yesterday in the reduced section in Kaufland; down from 130PLN to 35. Who says there's no santa?

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

Exactly. I have a job which didn't (and couldn't) even exist 100 years ago, and I can't drink between the 25th and the 30th because of this. While everyone else parties, some of us have to remain clear-headed to make life better for everyone else

I'm intrigued. Is it a secret or can you say what your job is?

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

Actually, the fast means that no alcohol is allowed at the Christmas Eve table. Many families don't follow this rule, but I would say that most do. At least the ones I know ;-)

In the last few days I've been asking for a show of hands among my students on whether or not their families drink on Christmas Eve. These are university students, so their parents must be in their forties and fifties. About 40% declared that alcohol (mostly wine) was allowed at Christmas dinner, but in moderation. When asked if their grandparents drank on this day 100% said no.

Food / Swiss Cheese in Poland [14]

Carski is a hard, matured yellow cheese made in Hajnówka (I think). It very good grated over pasta, and although I haven't tried in with FO soup, I'm sure it would work well.

Love / Amount of money for gift (I have a girlfriend in Poland) [56]

Guys I have a girlfriend in Poland that I want to send a card with some money in it so she can buy her own Christmas gift. Is Zl. 100 enough?

Thanks!

Bet you wish you hadn't bothered asking now Gordo.
Guy asks a question in all innocence and gets mugged by half a dozen infuriated PM members. Christ on a bike!

Work / 47zl net - good for teaching in Lodz? [9]

I have been offered 47zl net per lesson (45 mins) in Lodz.

It's on the low side, assuming you are a qualified and experienced EFL teacher.

Is this survivable?

You'd need a good solid teaching load, say 100 hours/month, to be able to live fairly well.
You say net. Are they going to pay your health insurance? Will they help you to find a place?
When do they want you to start? Provide more details and you'll get more detailed advice.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

i'm from Białystok

Then it is indeed unfortunate that you write as you do about your home city. Haven't you seen any positive changes in the last five or ten years? The lack of a regional airport is a joke, of course, but apart from that you must agree that the city has really improved in many ways.

even I can't find any airport always

Sorry you couldn't find the airport Polly. Did you look for a long time?
Where do you live, by the way?

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

It exists. They had a concert there last week. It won't be fully functioning (with the most modern scene-changing equipment in Europe, by the way) until next year, but it's nearly ready.

It's always puzzled me why this city, just two hours from WAW, has been disregarded by the rest of the country. Come and have a look for yourself.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

End of the day trust people's addictions, I bought Philip Morris during the 2008 crisis and if we have another crash I'll double or triple my investment - even the freezing cold doesn't stop the smokers from smoking. Sure they have no problem renting - but somehow they always find the money to buy cigarettes.

I welcome all suggestions, what to do with $100,000 today (investing in any currency).

Despite various agreements to restrict their use, landmines are still being deployed. You could make a killing there. How about small caliber handguns in the U.S. market?

You could always invest in street pharmaceuticals. Of course, you'd need a good front in order for you to distance yourself from the end user as much as possible.

Genealogy / Sniezyk / Sniezek - I thought I would like to know a little more about my roots [13]

We are having a little śnieżyk here in Podlasie right now. The first of the season. Much later than the last several years.

Related: Sniezek Family

I am searching for the birth record for Andczy SNIEZEK, born 26 Nov 1867 very possibly Katowice.
Can anyone supply an archive that might have this record. Have mother's first name as Marcelia, none for his father.
All help appreciated.

ŚNIEŻEK: root-word śnieg (snow); possibly topo nick from Śnieżki or Śnieżkowice

Work / Teacher Training, Workshops, and Seminars in Poland [3]

You're just in time if you can make it to Radom next Sunday.

Also look out for publishers' events. They sometimes give workshops while plugging their coursebooks.

Language / 24 hour time telling in Poland vs. other countries [29]

Quite a number of students used the Polish system, so they lost one point, sometimes two, out of 5 for that exercise.

That's rough. OK, it would be better to write 'five O'Clock', but they are not wrong.
