UK, Ireland / Why British men move to Poland [63]

Fair enough Cardno85, as long as the stance is adopted universally : )

As I'm sure you know, all too often posters here have an al a carte approach to stats - embracing and disseminating when the results suit them and dismissing completely when they don't.

I know you were making a particular point about BMI but really even the most cursory examination of many given statistics will reveal apparent glaring weaknesses in scope, definition etc etc

Yes,most Polki are rather slim by western standards

Which standards would they be?

The average Pole is fatter than the average Dutch, Irish, Danish, French, Italian, Belgian...

Surely there is a moral there?

Don't fix up your teeth, exaggerate the accent and pomposity (thus ensuring a role as an international uber-terrorist, or at least some sort of creepy callous, but suave individual) and you're laughing, Oscar wise?

... they can enjoy modest lives without overt displays of materialism.

Would this not be contrary to a lot of observations on contemporary Polish life? By Poles too I might add.

I'm sure there has been plenty of b1tching on this forum about how materilaistic Poles can be?

Not something that I've noticed much myself though.

I still don,t understand where this teeth thing came from

The States and possibly specifically California.

Nothing wrong with English or British teeth relatively speaking but to make it in "the entertainment business" many US wannabes will think nothing of fixing anything and everything that needs to be fixed - boobs, noses, teeth - whatever. The English (and most other people) don't bother and tend to stand out like a sore thumb in Hollywood.

Somewhat of a culture of braces in the states too.

Then Austin Powers didn't help either.

Ten of the top 20 countries are of majority black or Hispanic populations.

And are poor.

You don't think that has a lot to do with it?

Haven't even looked at the list but I'm willing to bet that most of the top ranking "white" nations are relatively poor too.

Yet in real life how many people have this?

Well I'm better endowed that's for sure so I don't give a sh1te about my lack of a six pack or whatever.

Life / Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country? [105]

So you answered your own question...

Nope. Not at all.

The Q was "would Poles..." not "what are the possible reasons that someone might..."

But never mind as you certainly weren't going to answer anyway.

Can I go to bed now?

Whatever you like - you're not much help on this thread anyway!

Merry Christmas.

And to you my darling : )

Life / Expats in Poland - would you fight for your new country? [105]

I'm simple stating that I don't think there can be any other ideological premise behind fighting another group of people.

To maintain a culture/way of life/religion/political status quo or to start new ones ...plenty of reasons.

You may not think they are valid but other people do.

What kind of answers you'll get will be based on what happened in the past. So if you want a definitive answer regarding what's likely to happen in the future, you might want to paint a clearer scenario?

You're still at it I see.

Very simple hypothetical question, no scenario needed - use your imagination.

Nag.

Belligerent nitpicker.

Ashley, if you are either unable or unwilling to answer the question can you stop with the obfuscating?

You don't like war/conflict, right, we get it.

It's not the point. War happens and people sometimes volunteer.

Just not sure what you're general gist is.

Fighting in another country, in their conflict, unsanctioned by their own government. In fact usually deemed illegal to participate by their own government. They are fighting because they believe in the cause - no other reason.

That kind of volunteer.

On a related note, would Poles readily fight for a cause in the conflict of another country?

E.g. The Spanish civil war attracted sizeable support from Irish volunteers (on both sides) as well of course as ideological volunteers from other countries.

Yeah. Had forgotten just how low the population was.

Although Belgium is another which surprised me a bit.

He is saying the opposite Zeti, a hypothetical "Straight eye for the queerguy" and claiming it wouldn't be allowed.

I don't think it would be commissioned because it wouldn't be popular or successful and doesn't make much sense. These would be the main obstacles rather than PC sensibilities.

It's not the show itself I find offensive. I've seen it before. It wasn't terrible.

Read as: it was actually quite amusing and I got loads of grooming tips but I'm not admitting that.

If a straight uses the term "queer" it's considered a slur and they get clubbed with PC

This usurping of previously offensive terminology is common. No big deal. Nigger is another one. As is redneck.

And the show assumes that straights are stuffy and stiff so they need the fabulous gays to save the day and help correct them.

Well, often that is the case. Don't you hate the whole metrosexual thing? Many men do - but again some don't. Good grooming is all it is. The more flamboyant gays have plenty of experience.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

The very misunderstood sign is when someone is showing a cut head (by strinking himself in the neck with a stright palm). It means that someone is tipsy (not that someone wants to kill you ;)

Yeah, that's a strange one to me.

Another thing is the "eyebrow flash" - the Irish tend to do this quite a lot. A quick lifting of the eyebrows and slight raising of the chin, as an informal greeting, maybe to someone you only half know.

Poles I know here mistook it for a sexual invitation at the beginning : )

There are probably plenty of differences in hand gestures/signals etc although I'm not sure about that yet. One main one though is the the two horned symbol made with the hand - in Britain, Ireland (& the states) it's a relatively innocent "party" "rock on" type of appreciation thing - at worst, a vague satanic, childish heavy metal reference.

In most of Europe - and possibly Poland - it is used to infer cuckoldry.

From talking to women it seems that the following three nearly always score highly:

Sean Connery
Colin Firth
Paul Newman

Surprisingly, Brad Pitt & George Clooney for example, seem to feature less frequently.

USA, Canada / CULTURE SHOCK! (of my Polish finance who visited the US) [210]

Well...for most like me it's quite descriptive...all that we don't like! ;)

Well for me, I love soul, funk & some old style blues. Don't like rap/hip hop etc.

So does that mean I "like black music" or not then?

; )

If YOU have a problem with using "black" and think it's dismissive

No I don't - I said it can sound dismissive

I can understand why it might cause problems but I've no real problem with it myself.

Anyway, it's not a term I would use because it's way too general and almost useless as a descriptive term.

Put it this way, if I went into a record shop in a predominantly black area with predominantly black clientele and saw all the categorised sections - "old school hip hop" "funk/rap fusion" "Detroit Soul" etc and then came accross "White music" I would be surprised to say the least.
