Study / Expat kids in schools in Poland [77]

they exist and tend to be the source of lots of bullying/abuse of German children, if I had German children and had the choice I'd put them in a rural Polish school before puttig them in this dump: bild.de/news/inland/news-inland/islamismus-an-der-grundschule-wassermaus-55213702.bild.html

yes Bild is not the most prestigious newspaper out there, but AFAIK the story has not been discredited, just ignored...

A German's kids would be very much outsiders in most rural Polish schools.

no more than a German's kids in mostly muslim schools in Germany... the stories are not edifying... and I very much doubt a German child would be stabbed in a rural Polish school...

News / Anti Iranian conference in Poland [24]

You don't need to be brainwashed to hate a gov which decides what you have to wear and throws you into jail

Apparently there's a lot of resentment at street level in Iran related to the vast amounts of money they pour into foreign adventures while drug abuse, unemployment and homelessness skyrocket...

Again, I'm really hoping a peaceful transition can be worked out, the current model is hopelessly broken, but there aren't enough in the government who are ready to throw in their lot with the people (as opposed to the imams...)

It's a fascinating country and culture and if they could jettison the mullahs they could make very rapid progress.

their kids speak fluent German and have been in the German school system

In the last few years I've had at least three students who've spent significant portions of their lives in Germany (and often speak German a little more natively than Polish). And I'm not in a department that would naturally attract them so I'm assuming there's more out there.

The Germanness comes out in different ways, in one it came out in her accent (clearly German in any language) though very Polish in dress and body language while another was super German in dress and body language (but spoke Polish without any kind of accent).

you face the same difficult decisions and insecurities that your average Mehmet would when he turns up in Frankfurt

Nyah, Mehmet will be confronting a society with profoundly different ideas about issues such as the appropriate behavior and interaction of men and women, family relations, relations between religion and politics, relations between religious groups etc. In addition Mehmet will be confronting a lot of tempting and dangerous substances (alcohol, drugs, contact with unrelated women) that are liable to leave him profoundly adrift (and without the social structures that could protect him from his worst impulses).

Going from Germany to Poland is somewhat of an adjustment but mainstream Polish and mainstream German culture are fundamentally similar. There are differences but these are like variations on a theme rather than a completely different system.

Poland is also very profoundly a place where people hate the forest but are happy to make exceptions and admit that a lot of the individual trees are okay. Generalized negative attitudes toward Germans are unlikely to hold up in face to face contact.

His kids are liable to face some initial harassment but ethnic German children in non-German majority schools have it much worse (that's been going on for about 10 years at least).

Yeah the old public/private dichotomy - not as strong as it used to be, but still very much a thing. People keep the lid on the pressure cooker in public and take it off in private...

it will need some pressure from the free world too...

pressure... not a preemptive war which is what the bloodthirsty neocons want

News / Anti Iranian conference in Poland [24]

The thing is most of the news out of Iran now really reminds me of the Eastern bloc in the 1980s.... everybody knows the system (socialism in the once case, theocratic government in the other) doesn't work but the government is still holding on as long as they can.

I've known a couple of Iranians in recent years and they effing hate, hate HATE the government. If a peaceful transfer (as happened in the East bloc in 1989) could be negotiated a secular Iran could blossom and and really go places.

Of course the US neocon ghouls don't want any kind of peaceful transfer, they want endless war and endless funds and American lives to be wasted. I hate the neocons worse than hitler and stalin put together and long for the day they have no more political power.

on a par with Southern Europeans in terms of being loud

With Spaniards? I was frustrated in Poland because it was so hard to eavesdrop (a necessary skill in learning a language) because their voices were too low.

because you speak Polish

But also when speaking English I've never had an issue (okay a lady looked at me real funny in at the check-in line in Malaga airport but...) I did know a Polish guy who got punched speaking German with a German friend (by guys from a factory).

Poles aren't quiet in public places.

define quiet... it's true that some Polish people never stop talking (even in places like concerts) but the overall decibel level is pretty low...

because most English speakers have had trouble at some point or another

can't say I ever have...

Don't worry Doug

Meh, as I've mentioned his rhetoric here about Poland shows how assimilated he is. Go to any online newspaper and look at the comments... Just as Dirk "I am _too_ a real Pole!" Diggler consistently argues like an American Doug consistently uses Polish style rhetoric (an observation which probably does not endear me to him...)

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

It is an American sentiment which stem from the fact

Maybe a little, but in practical terms I think it's mostly irrelevant. It can be interesting for historians but has no current relevance. For Gdańsk I look at its recent past.... German before WWII and part of Poland after WWII as part of a broader redrawing of borders... fine, that's all that matters. Anything that happened further back is irrelevant in discussing the current status of Gdańsk as a Polish city (and the desire of an overwhelming majority of its residents for it to remain that way).

It's like Russians who try to justify their (still) ambitions to take over most of Ukraine as Novorossija because of Kievan Rus - it's nonsense.

Over the last 1000 years, how many years has it not been a Polish city?

Who the effin' woodchuck cares? What's relevant to present discussions is the aftermath of WWII anything else is mastvrbatory fantasy

Spend all your time obsessing about the past and you'll miss the present and the future...

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

Danzig being a strong, wealthy, influential hotspot as it was connected to Germany and the Hanse?

Or course Gdańsk was a German city (Danzig) for most of its history with some Poles and Kaszubians around the margins, but Germany lost it once it lost WWII and it's not getting it back. It will thrive or not as a Polish city where respectful German guests are welcome and expansionist Germans.... are not.

History / A History of Gdansk, Poland [130]

the polish stubbornness to let Danzig be German and accept a corridor to the Reich was not furthering the peace either

Now you sound like a Putinite (the semi-official Russian line is now that Poland initiated WWII by haughtily refusing to give in to perfectly reasonable German requests).

This is obviously meant both to justify closer relations with Germany (hungry for Russian gas) and to inoculate the population from the kind of post-socialist civic transformation occurring in Poland (and which has now begun in Ukraine as well)

Dresden was was a prime example of this.

Dresden is actually a better example of berserker rage* than anything

*a kind of trance like fury that some individuals, military units and at times whole armies engage in where wanton destruction becomes the primary goal in and of itself beyond any tactical considerations

why you received a warning? I usually do

I sometimes express myself strongly but no... I have no idea. There've been times where I thought I was pretty extreme and nothing and then when I write a bunch of normal (to me) posts I'll get a warning...

My best guess was I was teasing Crow... (suggesting that neuroscientists might be interested in his brain's functioning). Why would that be 'abuse'? Beats me.

I would like links given to the actual posts that inspire mods to give warnings or suspensions... .at present it is deeply irrational and a poster with strong opinions I absolutely am left to guess at what curdled some mod's scrotum (or corresponding lady part)...

In your case it wouldn' be too difficult to guess, underneath a post with a red warning which said "please keep on topic, you give it the big one and posted off topic nonsense. I'm sure the next time you ignore a warning, it will be time out.

I don't want to believe our gov really has resigned and just shrugs collectively their shoulders.

you're still in the stage of denial.... what does the government care? how does it affect them?

Nobody really wants them, not even their home countries.

Andrew Hammel had an interesting post (can't find now) that explained the probably source of many of them but you need to understand the particular morality of extended-family clan based cultures which is very foreign to modern Europeans to get it.

It was based on the frequency them doing grossly abnormal things (like masturbating in public) and the self-description of a couple of them in interviews - one said he'd always been the 'donkey' in the family so they sent him away

short version: In almost any extended family you're liable to find a young male misfit, constantly in trouble for doing stupid things, he's hard to manage and can't find (or keep) a job and all but impossible to marry off.

why not raise the money to send them to Europe?

worst case scenario - he perishes on the way (in which case you comfort yourself that he died trying to help the family so you can fondly remember him) or does something stupid and gets sent back (in which case you can send him away again)

middle case scenario - he disappears, at least he's out of your hair and can't get the whole family in trouble anymore...

best case scenario - he makes it and the journey knocks some of the stupid out of him and maybe he's even able to establish a beachhead and can send for and bring more of the family over safely

Like I said it's a very different mentality but if you understand the collective worldview that still dominates in a lot of the world it makes a certain sense....

Only approx. 56% of all recognized refugees

Is 'recognized refugee' someone who fulfills the requirements after vetting or just any rando who shows up at the border asking where the free house is?

Maybe we should only take in kids and women....

The men won't let them leave...

Right now it's nearly always young men

About time someone noticed.... too bad no one in the german government knows or cares.... (or is involved in ineffective campaigns to try to get them to voluntarily leave).

Large scale immigration from culturally different groups works only under conditions of assimilation of the children, not integration, assimilation. The parents will hate it but the kids will thank you and pass that on to their kids (who will pass on a watered down and neutered and toothless version of the culture to their kids).

Multiculturalism and immigration don't go together... unless the aim is to create a mostly unemployable underclass.

all human beings have the capacity for good and evil... this particular person chose evil

and again, afghans and europe are not a good mix, the predominant values in afghan society is simply to different from those prevailing in Germany...

it's like a person trying to fly by flapping their wings - it's not gonna happen, just give up on the dumb idea already

Are not all of us human beings

Being a human being does not mean that a person is automatically good. Human beings often, as in the case of this Afghan, choose evil.

Related: Large scale unvetted immigration (a kind of limited open borders experiment by the German government) tends to overload local institutions leading to a drop in levels of trust in said institutions.

Supposed progressives in the US now want an open border with Mexico so it's worth remembering....

This'll merely fan the flames

Why are you more concerned with possible bad opinions about people with no ethical or legal right to be in Germany than against the victims of the crimes some of them commit?
