News / British man prosecuted for raping teenage girls in Kraków [47]

let's remember that equine girls tend to be spoilt brats - it wouldn't be a shock if some of them complained about him maliciously

perhaps they were wearing jodphurs that were too tight and were just asking for it eh?

Poland needs to wake up and demand background checks as known paedophiles will often ply their trade in other countries
however if this guy has raped little girls irrespective of their social status, they need to throw the book at him
and imprison him in a Polish prison where he will hopefully be savagely beaten by the other inmates

History / 1920 Battle of Warsaw - English trailer and film [55]

The film is disappointing, too many useless scenes with plastic Natasza Urbańska. The battle lasts only a few minutes, the rest is taken by shallow love story

perhaps he is merely pandering to modern tastes. Look at Pearl Harbor for example. A love story set amidst a battle is nothing new
but it seems to be essential in modern cinema
They even managed to stick a love scene in the middle of Ironclad ffs

keeping the battle scenes short cuts down further cuts down on expense

Work / Internships in Polish mass media [23]

Seriously, they will not be interested

fair enough, you may very well be right.
these are certainly convincing arguments.

the Insider and the Voice would have hired a horse to check opening times of museums etc providing that they did not have to pay for it back in the day

I still believe that the young lady in question ought to send them an email and see if she gets hired

Work / Internships in Polish mass media [23]

they will take anyone to do the background check stuff if it is as an intern
it is not exactly the glam end of journalism and she is unlikely to win a Pulitzer prize any time soon but it is a start

it is all about how much she wants it

Work / Internships in Polish mass media [23]

contact Warsaw in your Pocket, the Warsaw Voice, the WBJ, the Warsaw Insider

you would probably be neither use nor ornament for Bloomberg or Reuters
as you do not know Polish

however the expat press would be daft not to take you on as an intern
once you over here, you can start grooming some of the real news agencies

all my friends who are hacks have left Poland now so I cannot help you any further

Travel / Visiting Poland for 3 days. Need some info on getting around [12]

I wouldn't count on being able to pay with a credit card on the train -

you ought to be ok on the Warsaw Poznan trains
having said that make sure you have plenty of cash with you

if you can, you are better to buy the ticket at the station as you are guaranteed a seat and do
not have to answer any questions from the ticket collectors
it is enough to give them your ticket

do not take the buses from the airport, they are full of thieves

you are talking about a taxi ride for around 6 quid.

it is about 5 zloty or a quid more to buy the ticket on the train

it is a doddle to find the Sheraton from the train station
I recommend shank's pony

Travel / Visiting Poland for 3 days. Need some info on getting around [12]

Hi Alex

what is the conference about?

your first challenge will be getting to the train station
do NOT jump into the first taxi driver who touts for business at the airport as you will get ripped off
instead take a taxi from the taxi rank. Make sure you get some zlotys from the bankomat inside the airport first
you ought to be looking at a 30 zloty ride - although it is a while since I was in Warsaw so I expect someone
will now try to argue that is 35 zloty and not 30 but you get the idea

- Will I find any tickets?
you can pay on the train in cash or with a credit card
or you can buy a ticket if you go upstairs and cue for an eternity but you can pay with credit cards

you need to learn a Polish word
Odjazdy as this means departures
and another one, Peron which means platform

assuming you have got on the right train....

- Can I book a seat?
yes but not if you buy your ticket on the train. the secret is to sit in the Wars dining car and stuff yourself
the food is quite good but they only take cash

- Is railway travel safe in Poland?
yes but public displays of wealth are unwise

- Is it hard for foreigners to get around and get directions?
it can be, although it depends on how you want to communicate
grade your language

'train to Poznan? yes? good?'
ought to be understandable to most people under the age of 30

- Do people in Warsaw and Poznan speak English in general?
At the hotels they do and if you have a wait for your train, but are far better crossing the road and sitting in the Marriott

than hanging around at the station.

which hotel are you going to be staying at in Poznan?
if it is the Mercure or the Sheraton, they will be the easiest to find

Food / Crispy Tarczynski bacon [9]

Tarczynski make bacon or rather bekon
and... wait for it... it goes crispy

it looks revolting in the pack and looks as though it is over 100% fat but nevertheless it
crisps up

way to go Tarczynski processed meats

with the availability of white sausage, English mustard now being made in Poland (admittedly not Colemans but not at all bad),
Heinz beans, plus tinned tomatoes, mushrooms and eggs all the key components are in place for an English breakfast

its been a long time coming

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Morally corrupt is what I meant.

oh fair enough

you are quite right

strangely enough I can cope with the church syphoning off a couple of quid here and there
as it is more or less universal - look at US TV evangelists
but as soon as kids start getting interfered with then that is completely beyond the pale
and then when the guys at the top start offering known paedophiles jobs in other
countries then that is an entirely different ballpark

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

I think Polish church isn`t as corrupt as the Irish one.

I do not think that corruption was necessarily the problem in Ireland
it was the fact that the church set out to cover up paedophilia
if you were caught raping a choir boy in Cork, then you could expect to
get sent to Canada. if you got caught raping a child in Canada, you got
sent to Africa

the recruiting slogan ought to have been 'fu(k a kid and see the world'

there are paedos in all walks of life, however when the employers are
covering it up, then that is utterly shameful

As I said in my earlier post, without the church in Poland, there probably would not be a Poland
and without the work of JPII the wall would have not come down

I just do not feel comfortable when the church sticks its nose into politics irrespective of denomination

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

he would build British continental web of alliance core of which would be Poland.

you are quite deranged. I am sorry I asked

you really do believe that the woes that Poland suffered from 1945 onwards are completely because of the
British don't you?

You really feel that the US was blameless too no doubt.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

They're only hurting themselves by getting involved in politics to such a degree

they are hurting themselves far more by raping children

I was speaking to some Irish friends who told me that the Catholic church in Ireland is finished

a very valid point. without the church I doubt that there would still be a Poland
Just tell them to stick their beaks out of politics and keep their rosaries away from the ovaries

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

I see that the anti PiS retoric by some is still flourishing on here.

that might be because a lot of us finished secondary school and do not want to see Poland turned into a Catholic Taliban state
funny that...

Work / The demand for English language learning in Poland is at an all time low [41]

Remember golden harvest times? They are gone.... thanks to those friggin Polish teachers who steal our students.......

Well said. I do not teach English however it is logical that for every Polish student who learns English, they can set up in business and set up in competition one day

There are some utterly awful native speaker English teachers out there
just check out the tube in the other post who has set up an English language school in Poznan.

I worked with a few awful teachers in the past, however they would have been useless in just about any field

English teaching has attracted a certain class of itinerant, drifters who are bone idle and who have gravitated into teaching
then again at least they have had the ambition to chance it rather than just sign on and draw the dole

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

Ironside, may I ask you what you expected Britain to do?
Declare war on Russia in the attempt to liberate Poland?

What about all the other countries that were swallowed up by Russia?
or is Poland the only one that mattered?

Come on then hotshot what would you have done?

History / Did British public protest against the sell out of Poland to the Soviets? [286]

two friends of mine were officers in WWII and were accosted along with me by an old Polish guy in Warsaw who was disgusted with the way that the Brits had sold out Poland in Yalta. Just what was Britain expected to do? take on the might of the Soviet Union single handed?

They I have to say just laughed in his face.

Churchill tried to get the Yanks to see sense as he could see Stalin for what he was. The yanks accused Churchill of empire building and as a whole did not fancy America being dragged into a war in Europe started in some place that no one could find on a map in any case. they felt that if Stalin wanted it so bad, fu(k him, him could sort out the mess.

Such was the cult of personality with Stalin, that he was referred to as uncle Joe by the British press and he had suckered in just about everyone at the time

my Polish step father wept upon hearing the news of Stalin's death and he was a grown man at the time

another Polish friend was an old dude in his 80s who used to make chemical weapons
he would get drunk as a monkey and tell me all about the different nerve gases he knew (nothing which is not already published in the public domain, in case any government dweebs are monitoring this site)

we were talking about Yalta and all he could say was Churchill was to blame. He was an aristocrat and he used to puff on big cigars and he was responsible.

I believe that the documents are now available in the public domain which confirm that Roosevelt washed his hands with the whole of central europe as he was sick of conflicts in some pissant part of the world dragging in the mighty US.

I have to say it is funny that the people who seem to be the most vocal are US and Australian whose parents ran with their tails firmly tucked between their legs at the first opportunity the first chance that they got.

Law / Benefit entitlement in Poland for foreigners [37]

I intend to take advantage of this law to the fullest to my benefit and pleasure during my stay in Poland.

If your idea of a good time is spending hours inside a government office filling in forms then Poland is the place for you
I hope your Polish is up to scratch

Are you currently on welfare in Australia? It might help your case if you are

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

The ex-pat community in any country is usually always the most patriotic.
It is partly down to cultural insecurity and a sense of wanting to belong

I am sure that if you went to a Polish club in Australia and tried to raise
a toast to Stalin you would get an almighty kicking

The irony amuses me

Real Estate / How to get my property back in Poland? I left 36 years ago. [59]

thanks for the tip about the film, a friend has just told me he can get me a copy. I will check it out.

many of the Warsaw money changers change profession in the late nineties and used to hang outside the big cinema (I think it was Kino Luna)

near the Tandoor Palace on Marszalkowska. They used to tout cinema tickets. So rather than queue, you
could turn up late and buy a cinema ticket at twice the normal price from the same surly men.

News / 300 art treasures found in Polish garden shed! [11]

No. They call the guy a thief because he had a garden shed full of art treasures that didn't belong to him

not necessarily. He was living in a house formerly owned by an art dealer and you could argue that he bought the house along with the contents, so technically he may be the legal owner.

It is not as though the bricklayer was stealing art treasures and raiding museums himself.
As he has suffered from strokes, it is unlikely that he will be able to shed any light on how the art treasures happened to get there and would be too frail to stand trial, even if charged with something

The authorities should confiscate the lot as he has clearly demonstrated that he has not been a worthy custodian of the art

Real Estate / How to get my property back in Poland? I left 36 years ago. [59]

when I posted my earlier post about female university students putting out for a dollar in the 1980s, I expected to get absolutely chastised by dozens of readers accusing me of spouting nonsense. I am not an Arab gentleman, neither was I studying in Poland in the 1980s so I have to rely on my friend telling me the truth, having said that he was not the sort to bu11sh1t.

Instead the only response came from our portly friend with regards to whether Pewex took Silas Greenbacks or not
