News / Poland in ruin or flourishing? [35]

Kopacz and her PO flunkies and GW flatterers are having a field day debunking PiS claims that Poland is in ruin and showing images of glittery buildings and modern industrial facilities

Yes, it's a very positive campaign. The PiS claims have been well and truly shown to be false.

Duda was booed when he spoke of hungry children.

As he should have been. The problem in Poland is parental neglect rather than poverty. Unfortunately, the authorities seem very reluctant to step in to remove a child from obviously pathological families.

Even 3rd world countries have high-end shopping streets and other showcases which they like to show to tourists.

But these are not just in capital cities, but the whole country.

But in Poland only a minortiy have fully benefited from the transition.

Only a minority?

You're telling me that the majority is worse off now than they were in 1988?

Duda and PiS represent the entire nation

Would that be the same people that benefited from being the children of the nomeklatura, like Duda?

BTW your awareness of Brazil is impressive.

Yes, this guy seems to have quite a lot of knowledge as far as Brazil and Saudi Arabia is concerned.

Life / Polish maid very flirtatious? [36]

I believe these kind of problems often occur in a part of Poland known as "Strefa mroku". It's a common experience there, and one should be careful when resident there.

Life / Fitting balanced flue Gas Central heating boiler in Poland [32]

Yesterday the chimney sweeper came by with his calendar. Anyone else familiar with these? I will take a picture of it and post it here later today :)

These guys aren't even chimney sweeps, they're just random people pretending to be sweeps in order to make money.

Work / Do I need a Health Insurance? Freelancer in Poland (umowa o dzielo) [22]

I will work as a freelancer here, but it doesn't make sense for me to pay into the polish retirement fund

Yes, but the country needs you to contribute to the fund

If you're from an EU country, you can transfer the (small) contributions to your home country after you leave. However, most of the payment in the first 2 years is actually going towards health insurance, not pensions.

News / Poland loses bid to built Jaguars and Land Rovers [23]

I tend to think of Rolls Royce, Morgan, Lotus, Jaguar, McLaren, Bentley, Aston Martin...

I still dream of a McLaren F1 in my driveway...

As for Poland, I don't think this is really much of a loss. Had they been considering a site in somewhere like Radom, then yes, it would be.

Work / Freelance psychologist in Poland - least admin possible? Tax registration method. [8]

Hopefully it has got easier

It is a lot easier.

Companies are now registered within 15 minutes, and there's a "one window" service meaning that the person you see in the Urzad Miasta (or whatever it is locally) is the only person you see. Much of the previous bureaucracy has gone, though it's still advised to have an accountant. Even a stamp isn't technically needed these days, though some people might have a hissy fit if documents aren't stamped.

The killer is the compulsory ZUS contributions, which are now up to over 400zl a month and rising...

Classifieds / Private English Lessons by Experienced Professional Teacher in Poland (Warsaw) [107]

Always wondered about that, and always been too lazy or too busy to research it. Why "the Ukraine"? Maybe better answer me in off topic thread to keep this thread on topic.

I'll answer here because I want to reply to the rest... mods, don't kill me ;)

It's wrong to say "the Ukraine". It comes from the days when Ukraine was a region rather than being a country - so you would say "ah, in the Ukraine, there be dragons" - as Ukraine was simply a geographical region and not a state in its own right. These days, it should be Ukraine without "the". It probably comes from Polish - as the Poles say "na ukrainie" as opposed to "w". Same with "na litwie" - it implies that Lithuania is a region and not a country.

There's a discussion here about it in Polish - sjp.pwn.pl/slowniki/w-Litwie.html

Well, no need to go around and around a situation that shall not change. The OP has trouble to find work because she is not a native, now she says she has a thick accent, and also because she cannot offer students REAL English.

The accent is the killer. No matter how great someone's English might be, if they've got a thick accent, it's unlikely that someone would take them.

PS: I notice that NOBODY is able to give her tips to find work.

I'm confused why she needs help to find work in Warsaw, to be honest.

Work / Freelance psychologist in Poland - least admin possible? Tax registration method. [8]

Paying taxes in advance (even quarterly) seems odd to me as a freelancer / self employed - is it unavoidable?

You aren't paying in advance, what you're doing is invoicing clients (as normal) and then paying the tax on your profits at the end of the month/quarter. Strictly speaking, these aren't tax payments as such, but rather an advance towards your final tax bill. So - let's say you invoice for 2000zl in September. You'll pay tax on that in October, and then your final tax settlement will be worked out at the end of the year and you'll pay extra/get a refund.

Generally speaking, self employed people usually get refunds at the end of the year.

Can I use Umowa o Dzieło, because of course I will not have formal contracts with my clients...

No. Umowa o dzieło is specifically when you create a work. For example, a drawing or a piece of writing. You also can't use it because someone has to give you the contract in question. If they're giving you a contract, then (at a minimum) - you must use umowa zlecenie.

What is the easiest, simplest, lowest tax registration method I can choose?

You need to be registered as self employed.

Life / Fitting balanced flue Gas Central heating boiler in Poland [32]

I am still puzzled as to why they put a CE certification mark on materials that you are not allowed to use in a European country, perhaps Poland never really joined the EU.

It will come, probably when someone takes the gas company to court for abusing their monopoly position.

Life / Fitting balanced flue Gas Central heating boiler in Poland [32]

From what I was able to figure out, two men who go around and check the airflow, once every year for blockages, birds nests, etc, would be put out of work if we were allowed to fit boilers with a balanced flue.

That explains a lot! I wondered why someone was coming round every year to do that, and now it makes perfect sense.

Another communist-era "non-job" situation, then.

History / Age of Enlightenment in Poland? [80]

Poland was very advanced at one point, and from what I understand, in 1919, the former German and Austrian parts of Poland were very developed indeed.

News / Poland loses bid to built Jaguars and Land Rovers [23]

Jaguar and Landrover still sell well, but are in an increasingly niche market compared to Asian marques.

When you see what the Asian (non-Indian) companies can offer (especially Kia), you really have to wonder who would buy an Indian car built in Slovakia...

It should be built in the UK not Slovakia or Poland. It is/was a British car, owned and built by the British. Now, its owned by an Indian company and will be built in Slovakia ! yeah let's buy that British Freelander, not.

I think "British" and can't help but think of British Leyland and other hysterically bad companies.

Life / In Poland everyone is everyone else's doctor? [33]

I think I have already described it.

You haven't described at all how they attempt to force religion on you.

If you would like a real life comparison, I'd suggest you try to live in Saudi Arabia in a small village for awhile.

You're rather familiar with Saudi Arabia, aren't you Levi?

From what I know, it's also a matter of logistics - Slovakia has a bigger car industry than Poland, so the supply chain is shorter. It may also be good old fashioned incentives whereby the Slovak government will have promised considerable concessions to them. As a man who thinks that foreign companies should pay their fair share, you should be supportive of the fact that the government hasn't bribed them.

In terms of wages, it's about the same.

But they are Indians, aren't they, not British?

Just curious.

I'm rather curious how religion has been forced upon you unwillingly.

Do they force you into meetings where they demand that you accept Catholicism?

But how do they do it?

I'm just really curious as to how they go about trying to force it on you. I mean, are they approaching you on the street, or what?

And then I am considered an out-group member from that day on.

What kind of groups are you associating with?

I mean, if you're attending meetings of the All-Polish Catholic Forever Youth Brigade, it's quite normal that you would be an outcast for rejecting religion.

Can't imagine that none of the zealous polish patriots are completely unaware of this here....

I'm just wondering which non-religious groups try and force religion on you.

I don't think these experiences happened, given that most posters on this forum have never experienced what you claim to have.

But go on, please tell us how they try and force you. I'm curious.

History / Age of Enlightenment in Poland? [80]

That's not quite true. Catholics were heavily discriminated against for years, and even today, Catholics are the largest group by religion and yet are still seen as somehow inferior.

Let's not even mention the fact that saying bad words about God in the Bible Belt is a thoroughly bad idea.

By trying to make me go to their church.

How do they try and make you go to the Church?

No-one's ever tried to make me go to Church here, not even the head of the local Church who I'm on very good terms with.

Perhaps you're imagining it, given that less than 40% of Poles go to church?

And what the RCC did 400 years ago is hardly relevant today.

Papists trying to force papism on me. For example. And when they realize I don't swing that way give me brutally mean looks.

How do they force religion on you?

Yes, what he describes seems to be something from another country, not Poland.

Here the religious nutcases are out of control.

Could you perhaps go into detail about how Polish citizens are "out of control"?

(where's Polonius when you need him?)

History / Age of Enlightenment in Poland? [80]

Last I heard, people could be prosecuted here for insulting the papacy or even politicians.

Criminal libel. It exists in most European countries.

Even this thread is an example that the concept is foreign - one single American questioning a few believes and they want to remove me from the country?

Could the mods perhaps clarify if the poster is actually in PL or not?

This shows that the level of tolerance here is basically zero.

Towards trolls, yep.

My country allowed in millions of Polish and some rednecks here are threatened and afraid of a single American living here who does not worship every single cultural item that exists in this country.

You should respect your host country and understand that everyone - from the millionaire to the poor farmer is a Polish citizen and equal under the law.
