Life / What are the things which cause culture shock in Poland? [164]

They can, believe me. It all depends on the shop and its layout. Some even give you the sign to go ahead of them which is nice. Old people are the worst offenders but you can see it in other countries too. Old people are a law unto themselves.

Many Poles are laid back and are in no rush in shops. It's the old codgers that think they can skip to the front of the queue or, worse still, start ordering when you are halfway through yours.

I would say queuing is the thing that springs to mind the most. I remember reading a book by a Eurasian called Rex Shelley called 'Culture Shock: Japan'. Contained within was a mass of examples of where one might encounter culture shock. When in Japan, I adapted quite well so didn't feel it much. In Poland, standing in a line is the real thing that stands out. It's not that bad in many places but the lack of it in some places is astounding!

Love / Are Polish Women cold and aloof? [249]

Do Polish women cease to be Polish women after 3 beers or 4/5 strong drinks? I don't think so! They are not so cold and aloof then :)

It can be hard to get to know them and they tend not to venture from their own too much. It involves a bit of adjustment on the part of the person who wishes to get closer. Still, quite a few can be direct and far from aloof. They are generally harder to talk to than Scottish girls but there isn't such a huge difference.

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

To my knowledge, there are 3 criteria for a country but I'll be damned if I remember what they were.

As regards Great Britain, you might be wrong there. There is no reason, other than antagonism, to say The United Kingdom as Stormont and NI are hardly represented well. I can't remember how it is in the UN Chamber but you could be right that they don't refer to GB. I have to check simply.

News / New cross war in Warsaw [530]

Richfilth is spot on here. The RCC got too wrapped up in morality and they unduly transgressed into self righteousness.

UK, Ireland / Any direct flights from Aberdeen or Inverness to Poland? [11]

I'd doubt it. Are you from Aberdeen, btw? I know a guy who went to Perth, OZ, but it would be a shot in the dark that you are him.

We need a direct flight by next year. Without one is just having a laugh.

Eh, I hate to break it to you but the Soviet Union is not a country either ;) ;) Russia is.

Your analysis is also somewhat lacking. The UK is comprised of four countries and GB of 3. Still, they are considered as one unit when it comes to classifications.

I think the * should have been applied to the whole post ;) ;)

Just kidding, there were valid points included there.

News / New cross war in Warsaw [530]

Ruthless opportunism has taken over. It was the same after 9/11 in that a whole lot of career nobodies suddenly seeped through the cracks and came out of hibernation. Suddenly we saw a nobody become a war correspondent, author, reporter or speaker overnight. We should give these people no attention at all as they merely seek attention. Bring out the tanks with the water spray, I say. Clear out the trash!

Bill Hicks line :)

Religion and politics do mix here and we see it time and again. They are so inextricably intertwined and the demarcation line is fuzzy.

News / New cross war in Warsaw [530]

We see the hypocrisy emerging. Stephen Fry and Christopher Hitchens exposed the RCC for carrying out some of the most corrupt and damaging actions, in total contravention of the teachings of Jesus. Those who use any religious symbol to justify the bad deeds they perpetrate are sacriligious in the extreme. This church has harmed so many people and many that follow it would be well down in the pecking order of Jesus's chosen people.

It's all about maneuvering and that's quite sad. The cross brought people together and now they are going to move it? That strikes me as unfair! However, why move a cross to a church, right? ;)

Again, it has come down to people vying for supremacy rather than a meritorious assessment and practicality of having a symbolic cross standing in a strategic position. The cross symbolised the tragedy of the victims and how Polish thoughts were with them. Typical Poland, they turned it into a mud throwing, tit-for-tat affair and didn't sit down and think it through. The day the Poles learn to sit down and seriously discuss an issue as other countries do is the day they positively move forward. Otherwise, it's just a slugfest!

Love / Sigh... Polish girls have such pretty eyes. [51]

Not too wide of the mark but there are many that aren't that way, right enough.

Some of the younger students I taught had really radiant eyes. The spark goes out when the reality of life hits home :(

The difference is that the Taliban act on their beliefs. You don't see mohair berety lopping off heads unceremoniously. The cross is a symbol of virtue and people need to see more of them. It works. My wife's parents generally don't practise but they are some of the first to cross themselves when they see a cross. Keep them visible! You know, they will have a mosque outside Ground Zero in NYC. The minaret will be very visible and that's the point. It should be noticed!
