News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

=hythorn]I do not think that corruption was necessarily the problem in Ireland
it was the fact that the church set out to cover up paedophilia

Morally corrupt is what I meant.

=hythorn]I just do not feel comfortable when the church sticks its nose into politics irrespective of denomination

Yes, I can agree. Give ceasar what is caesar's and God what is God's :):):):)

=hythorn]
I was speaking to some Irish friends who told me that the Catholic church in Ireland is finished

I think Polish church isn`t as corrupt as the Irish one.

That is why so many people in Poland still support it and parties which display anti-religious stance can expect no more than 10% votes.

=hague1cmaeron]I reserve my right to abuse PIS at whatever time i feel like it(:

Spare them from time to time, show some Christian mercy. :):):)

However, I don`t want to see Poland turned into an Atheist Taliban state, either. :):):)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

=delphiandomine]Polish politics really does seem to boil down (right now) into two groups of people - those with a future, and those without hope.

Even if PiS wins, they won`t be able to help those who already lost hope. Nobody is. Sad, but true.

Out of pure curiosity: will the thread be closed on Saturday and Sunday to conform to pre-vote election silence rule?

Admins/mods, what do you think?

=delphiandomine]Well, they are hugely popular among the Catholic worker-moustache crowd.

Fortunately, PO has its conservative wing, so other Catholics, without moustaches, can vote that party.
PS. I once used to wear moustache. For many years. :):):):)

=hague1cmaeron]It looks as though Platforma is haemorrhaging to Ruch Palikota,

Nope. It is SLD that is bleeding and losing votes. Today`s polls - Palikot Movement - 7%. SLD - 6%. Incredible losses!

=Wroclaw]has anyone noticed more posters, poster thingys stuck to railings and lamp posts.

Yes, indeed. They are everywhere.

=Wroclaw]
well, in wroclaw a lot of them have been ripped/pulled down/smashed.

Nothing like that in Krakow.

=delphiandomine]Nowadays of course, no-one wants to hire some moustache to do a repetitive job that can be done by a robot without the whining and complaining.

And that`s sad. After all, people are people and should have a chance to get bread from their work. The money they earn will be spent on consumption which makes the world go round. And what consumption does an industrial robot have? :):):)

=boletus]Grzegorz Napieralski together with Leszek Miller - a "number one" from Gdynia-Słupsk election list of SLD electorate - arrived at 5 in the morning and sailed for two hours on a fishing cutter UST-111 over the Baltic Sea.
I thought you would enjoy this moving moment.

They went to get more votes among angry fishermen who have to pay gigantic fines to EU for overfishing cod a few years ago. SLD leaders demand the government to pay those fines.

=gumishu]over 30 per cent of the Polish population do

Over or below, who knows?

=WielkiPolak]I see that the anti PiS retoric by some is still flourishing on here. Mainly delphiandomine, but not only.

The political stance of PF posters perfectly reflects the real preferences before elections. PiS supporters are less numerous than PO ones.

However, you are warmly invited to take part in bashing PO and backing up PiS here.

It will make our discussions more vivid.

Jerry, are you Kinga`s boyfriend or husband? If so, congratulations!

Guys, a concise presentation of parties is here:

Major: PO and PiS
thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/55905,Polish-Election-2011-made-simple-Part-1

Medium: SLD and PSL
thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/56008,Polish-Election-2011-made-simple-%E2%80%93-Part-2

Sofa size: PJN, RPP, PPP:
thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/56078,Election-2011-made-simple-%E2%80%93-Part-3

Which party is the most populistic?

Yesterday I heard such estimates:
(Rough numbers)
After getting power, and fulfilling their election promises,

PJN will cost Polish budget 53 billion PLN
SLD - 10
PiS - 6.8

PO - 300 million

=Grzegorz_]
It's not that I don't like you or something...

Does it mean you don`t dislike me? I am really delighted. Thank you.

=Grzegorz_] Do you really believe that all the people working in Żabka stores, cleaning the streets etc. are making no less than 2600 there ?

I didn`t mean that every position offers you minimum 2600. I thought of it as the lowest median, while the highest is around 5000.

Sorry if I caused misunderstanding with my English or mental shortcut.

verage salary in Warsaw is relatively high (compared with average in Poland) due to damn load of well paid jobs being there, huge number of companies have HQs there (including vast majority of banks) basically all government institutions are there...

Yes, you are right.

=Grzegorz_]"normal" jobs pay only slightly better than average for Poland.

Not so slightly. The difference between Warsaw and a small town in eastern Poland is quite significant. From 280 to 500 zlotys.

But higher cost of subsistence in Warsaw make the living standard the same, so you can be right.

Hotels near the airport on a map. Book online now. Pay at the hotel.

Thank you for your invitation but I am too busy now.

History / 1920 Battle of Warsaw - English trailer and film [55]

Who knows?
The primary reason is that 3rd years in high schools are doing early 20th century now - WW1, Independence of Poland, Polish-Bolshevik War etc etc. History teachers hope that students will grasp the subject more efficiently through the film. :):):):)

A Review of the film:-

Thanx.

The review is very favourable. I hope our Great Expectations will be satisfied.

My class is going to the cinema in October. Other schools are planning the trip too.

Nope. It is a gigantic grilled PARÓWA. :):):)

I bought certain second-hand antiquated device which I used to have in my childhood. Many of my sweet memories are attached to it. Now, I use it again with my kids and they are fascinated, despite being surrounded with modern gadgets. They frequently ask me: Dad, when will we .....?

What do I mean?

PS. We use it in the evening.

History / Resettlement after ww2 (old German houses and buildings still in Poland) [28]

Nicely presented in one of the funniest Polish comedies. Sami Swoi.
Pawlak family settlers discover that their former neighbours` from the East, Kargul family, have settled in the area. To feel like at home, they choose a house which stands next to their old/new neighbours`.

Bear in mind many of these buildings were destroyed.

Come on, they could be a bit damaged but not destroyed.

Wow, so you turn up, start living in a vacant house, then register that it's yours?

Yes. Remember that post-war Poland was a Wasteland- elites and educated people had been decimated during the war. Besides, those who survived lived in Poland proper. In result, newly acquired territories lacked skilled clerks, so beaurocracy was minimal.

History / Resettlement after ww2 (old German houses and buildings still in Poland) [28]

In the early period of resettlement, when ex-German houses were abundant, Polish settlers just chose a house they liked and then registered the ownership with local authorities. Simple.

When communist rule strengthened, the red tape increased and real estate was officially distributed to settlers.

=Sidliste_Chodov]**** off. YOU learn to read.

Thanks. I put this quote in Typical Abuse Phrases! :):):) Have you got anything else? :):):):)

=Sidliste_Chodov]He didn't say whether it was netto or brutto.

It was obvious for intelligent people. Read below, Mr Expert:

=Sidliste_Chodov]What's that got to do with it? I know what the average salary in Hong Kong is, but I don't live there.

If you know what an average salary in Poland is, i.e., 3500 brutto, 2600 netto,

stat.gov.pl/gus/5840_1786_PLK_HTML.htm

was it so difficult for you to conclude that Warsavian salaries are higher after reading Bullfrog`s post with such calculations?:

=bullfrog]it would very rare to find a job paying the minimum wage in Warsaw, most jobs would pay at least 2,500 PLN per month.. In fact, the average salary in Warsaw is 50-60% higher than the national average..

It means that while in other regions of Poland the median 2600 netto often goes down to 1500, in Warsaw the 2600 is a minimum offered to employees, and the average is much higher.

Actually, the median salary in Warsaw is 5200 PLN.

poradnik-praca.pl/rynek-pracy/zarobki-2011/zarobki-w-warszawie

=Sidliste_Chodov]The last time I read up about it, Katowice had less unemployment and a slightly higher average salary. Clearly that has changed. No big deal.

When? 100 years ago? :):):):) When Katowice was German and Warsaw Russian? :):

It could be true, indeed. :):

That is why I will repeat: stop pretending an expert on Warsaw earnings. :)

News / Europeén Union will finance the 2nd Warsaw metro line. Good news. [60]

But a significant proportion of jobs in Warsaw do not pay that much more.

opps, you seem to be deficient in reading skills. Why do you repeat the same BS about 1600 netto salary in Warsaw if Bullfrog explained it clearly enough, meaning 2500 netto as a minimum level for Warsaw?:

=Sidliste_Chodov]But it's all irrelevant anyway, I'm not planning on moving to Poland ;)

If you don`t live in Warsaw, what can you know about average earnings there? ?????

Don`t be silly. With 4% unemployment, Warsavians have the highest salaries in Poland, but costs of living there are also high.

=Sidliste_Chodov] If I worked in Warsaw, I would only take home about 1500 PLN (so I'm told),

Why do you rate yourself so cheaply? Would you work as a street beggar for international gangs or sth when in Warsaw? Come on, with your language skills, you could find a better position.

Is there much opportunity for teachers to be corrupt these days?
(I suppose oral language exams are one area...)

Corruption happens at various school based competitions where teachers promote their favourite participants to get to the second or third stage. I saw it and was disgusted. I am going to talk to one young female teacher about it. And it isn`t about money, just unfair preferences of a teacher.
