Study / From UK to Poland - studying for a Masters Degree in Warsaw [14]

as far as I was aware, in the UK you have to pay if you want to study a Master's degree, unless someone knows something different.

Scotland funds some postgraduate studies these days. No idea about the other three countries.

I am not sure of the information that if someone is studying in English they do not have to pay for their course fees.

It depends on the course, although the vast majority of English-language courses are paid for.

News / Polish Parents protest against Poland's pro-homo sex education [75]

If gay people had a choice, very f!ckin few of them would choose it.

I dunno, if you listen to what Polly tells us, gay people have constant sex and seem to live lifestyles that involve non-stop partying AND there's no risk of pregnancy. It's like a non-stop orgy in their world (according to Polonius) - who wouldn't want it?!

Daniel Sloss had a fantastic commentary on this - watch this.

youtu.be/WWTv4ZQdg8g?list=PL5963E62BF7FC3057&t=153

Anyway, Polonius, we're still waiting for a link to any "pro-homo" agenda in Polish education.

These extremists are obsessed by sex.

What's amusing about this is that there's not actually a single shred of evidence presented by the "protest" organiser. It's just a huge rant about "gender" and without a single reference to a MEN document on the matter.

They are completely obsessed with sex though - even to the point of claiming that 5 year olds are taught about sex in school, which is an obvious lie. Looking at the "protesters", half of them were too old to have school kids anyway, and the other half looked like social retards.

So you also advocate and/or promote pornography?

If it's produced by consenting adults and sold to consenting adults and is legal, what's the issue? We're not in the PRL anymore, adults can choose what they want to consume. It does strike me as hilarious that the Catholic Church and the PZPR were equally scared of pornography, however.

Do you favour all different kinds including incest (sex with gran), rimming, homo perversion, or just certain types.

Incest isn't legal. The other stuff, as long as it's legal, I couldn't care less. I don't get involved with Catholics doing downright creepy things, and they shouldn't get involved with other people's lives too.

Do you think there should be more of it on prime-time TV?

Is there already pornography on prime-time TV? I wouldn't know, maybe you want to tell us?

And would you want your little kids (if you've even got any) to regularly indulge?

It's not legal for them to do so.

Or does porn simply create a caste of very rich producers and another class of short-lived STD-infected porn stars?

As long as everyone involved consents to the activity, I fail to see what the problem is.

@Pol3: please give us concrete examples of pro-homo sex education in Polish schools! I have been personally connected with several schools in Poland and I have never seen, never heard anything of the kind.

I'm still waiting too :D

I've never seen anything such - if I had, I probably would've sent a Facebook message to several people on here remarking how Poland has finally started embracing reality.

It has to be said that I've never seen anything pro-sex in schools, let alone pro homo-sex!

Is it easy enough to get a grant? A grant for living expenses would be great, but for course costs would be essential.

No, you won't get a grant for covering living expenses or course costs. There are scholarships available, but these are subject to very strict criteria and you won't get them until after the 1st year. The amount is minimal as well - it might pay you enough to share a dorm room with 3 others and to eat very cheap food, but that's about it.

and the grandparents who teach the schoolchildren such disgusting hatred grew up in a sick society called communism.

Yes, for some reason, Communists really had a thing against pornography and homosexuality. A lot of the "Catholic" views promoted these days are just rehashed Communist views.

LGBT circles are infiltrating schools

I can assure you that they aren't. See, Polonius, I actually work in a school - and there is no sign of anything related to LGBT issues there. As I said, the only talk of homosexuals comes from kids, and it's in the usual childish "haha he's a homo" way.

and instituions of higher learning

I also attend one, and I haven't seen any examples of it.

They see to it that the content they're propagating makes its way into materials pormoting sex educaiton.

I've got a keen interest in the topic, and I haven't seen a single piece of material about it. And that comes as someone who would be first in the queue to qualify as a sex education teacher if it became a separate subject, due to the fact that 90% of teachers are utterly incompetent when it comes to teaching the subject.

There will be more such propaganda in this school year since the Platformer education minister is forcing more such content down the throats of school children and teachers.

Do you really expect any of us to take fronda.pl seriously? It's a very right wing Catholic portal that many Catholics hate.

@Delph: some teachers, like you say, unprepared try to give kids some info while in biology classes but what I mean is that there are no formal sex education classes like in a lot (if not most) of European countries.

Yes, it's an absolute disgrace. Some biology teachers are able to do it properly without emotions, but many others simply ignore that part of the programme. There's a dire need for teachers that are actually able to do it properly - not just about sexual health, but also about emotions and all the other things that come between 10-16. I did one class with my kids about "10 things I love about you" - and you should have seen the reaction. Books were thrown, there were tears, abuse hurled - yet at the end of it, they all admitted that they found it very, very difficult at the age of 11 to tell someone of the opposite sex that they liked something about their personality. They were bright enough to realise that "something has changed" when I asked them why they were best friends 2-3 years ago, although none of them could clearly identify exactly what.

As I said, I'd love to teach the subject properly. We can but hope...

In most European countries, schools offer sex education lessons.

Indeed. The problem in Poland is that it's left to unqualified (in that area) teachers to do it - so they often ignore it out of sheer embarrassment. It's particularly a big problem with girls starting puberty and male teachers.

Perhaps Polonius would like to tell us how he would ensure that all girls receive reproductive health classes.

Bwahaha, challenge accepted :D

to protest against the promotion of pro-homo content in Poland's educational system.

Go on Polonius, please tell me exactly what "pro-homo" content there is in Polish schools. Go on :)

The only time I ever hear anything about homosexuals is when I hear my oldest kids at work making sly remarks about one teacher. They still think I don't know that they call him gay :D

The dmonstrators fear outside agitators promoting abortions and sexual perversion will be brought into Polish schools to indoctrinate school children.

I feel sorry for them that they don't understand even the basic needs of their own children and that they mistake sexual education for something that it isn't.

It is heartening to see Polish parents who take their job of child rearing seriously and will not be bullied by the loud and pushy homo-promoting lobby.

Have you actually looked at the pictures? Half of them are far too old to be rearing children, and the other half could only be described as "margins of society".

Travel / Car Hire in Gdansk and trip to Kaliningrad [14]

Do Russian authorities deliver tourist visas in a few minutes at the border? I doubt it.

They do, but only at two border crossings and only for 72 hour periods.

konigsberg.ru/eng/kaliningrad/express-visa.htm

Why they don't simply abolish visas for Kaliningrad is entirely beyond me. Russia could do very well out of tourism if they did.

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

although those are two distinct personalities.

Didn't Duda say that Lech Kaczyński was like a father to him?

Duda's already repeated the first mistake of Lech - which is to make politics out of absolutely everything. Would it harm him to award people with their professor title in public, as is tradition?

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

Now Duda is being criticised for his fence-mending.

What fence-mending?

We all know that Duda simply realises that Poland has no chance against Russian attack, so begging Germany for help is the only way, given the utter lack of interest in Poland by the United States.

Life / Canadian Moving to Poznan, Poland - what to bring over, areas to avoid, school for a child. [54]

im currently unemployed and looking for a job.

One thing you have to bear in mind is that you require a work permit - and in addition, you need to check as to whether your residence permit will actually allow you to work in the first place as a partner of a full time student.

Actually, call centres have more or less vanished from Poznań. The work now is in SSC's/BPO's, where the starting salary is around 3000zl/month with additional benefits. Totalled up, the usual package is closer to 4k than 3k a month.

Melis, do you have a degree, and do you speak any other languages to at least upper-intermediate level?

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

He is lacking one thing - experience of politics at a high level. He's already shown that he's walked into several political traps (such as not issuing new professors with their title in person) - and he's already exposed as being corrupt. Something tells me that he just doesn't have the experience to survive at this level - and it will get even worse if he's seen as a rubberstamp President if PiS win this year.

Language / Ambulans displacing karetka - similar meaning of different Polish words? [19]

Know of any other such changes during the post-1989 transition?

Interesting thread Polonius, I'd like to know more examples too.

I spotted this a while ago -

dworzec czeremcha

I've never seen "świetlica dla podróżnych" anywhere else - always just poczekalnia. Is it the same thing, or was this something different in previous times? It's a sign in the train station in Czeremcha.

News / Poland's President-Elect Duda leads in public trust - CBOS poll [185]

The latest IBRIS poll: PiS and allies 39,1%, PO 19,0%, Zjednoczona Lewica (SLD, TR, Zieloni i UP) - 8,3% Ruch Kukiza (Kukiz'15) - 7,0%, Nowoczesna Ryszarda Petru - 5,6%, Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe (PSL) - 5,2%.

This is what confuses me about the seat allocation - I've seen a suggestion that such a result would mean a majority for PiS, but I don't understand how. From previous elections, 39% should mean around 200-ish seats.

If such results were produced by the October election, PO could team up wtih PSL and Petru but would still have only some 29% of the vote. PiS would have the option of co-opting Kukiz, although potential problems with such an unpredictable character might prove daunting. If faced with the prospect of parliamentary absence, PSL would probably join PiS in a coalition. PSL has been in every parliament in free Poland.

It would be a huge gamble for the PSL - Kaczyński is still very much the party leader, and they will be well aware that he openly attempted to destroy his coalition partners last time in a misjudged attempt to win a majority. If they accepted such a thing, they could also hugely alienate their middle-class semi-rural electorate.

I would say - whatever happens - PiS have to stay away from Kukiz, otherwise they're headed for a repeat of the 2005-2007 government.

Travel / Car Hire in Gdansk and trip to Kaliningrad [14]

Maybe somebody knows rental company that will let me do it?

It's not going to happen. Kaliningrad is an exceptionally high risk for car theft in their eyes, and until very recently, insurance was also a problem. I don't think there's a single insurer in Poland that will cover trips to RU on a fully comprehensive policy, for instance.

There are daily buses to Kaliningrad - would that suit you?

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

No Białystok, Star of the East? Next time you're here contact me if you'd like a guided tour around Białowieża.

Did you see that Belarus has opened up visa-free visits to their side of the park?

I'm sorely tempted to take a weekend trip - I'd like to see Czeremcha and Hajnówka as well as the park, and seeing the Belarus side would be the icing on the cake.

Law / Poland student visa refusal - 'intention to leave' [51]

Exactly.

On the bright side, those dishes will be in the USA, so it's not so bad. I was reading only today about a restaurant owner that pays his dishwashers around $8 an hour.

Law / Poland student visa refusal - 'intention to leave' [51]

Wash dishes, for instance. Sometimes they get promoted to being allowed to clean other kitchen stations. If they're really lucky, they might be allowed to wash a few vegetables.

But aren't private universities more expensive?

It doesn't work like that in Poland. Private universities are not universities, they are "higher schools". They do not have the right to use the name "uniwersytet" in their name. Fees are irrelevant - the country pays for EU citizens to study for free at public universities.

The point is that the are comically easy to get into, regardless of academic record, and basically take all comers.

Have you ever heard of someone refused admission from a private "university" if their documents were in order? I haven't.

They apparently tell prospective students that finding part-time work is easy in Poland to lure them in.

Not only that, but some of them use agents which openly lie about things. For instance, I've heard of one school in Poznań where the local agent was telling Indians that they could work full time during the course.

With precious few exceptions, the quality of education at these schools is abysmal and any "degrees" they confer are worthless.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

There are some exceptions, but you won't find those exceptions at the "West Pomeranian Business School".

Law / Poland student visa refusal - 'intention to leave' [51]

No, they really don't. If they need a visa to enter Poland, they're not likely to spend much and will instead try and work to earn money.

It's especially true with people that attend private universities. (which, by the way, aren't universities, but "higher schools".)

Neither cultural heritage nor language proficiency has anything to do with the agreements that Poland has made.

More to the point, I suspect Harry understands Poland better than you do, not least because he doesn't support openly corrupt politicians.

USA, Canada / For my dad... "free Steve Wlodarz" He is serving life without parole in a United States prison [32]

What I'm struggling to understand is why he reacted in such a way to begin with. It's not quite normal to mix vodka and whisky, and it seems that he has/had some severe mental issues too. If he was in such a mess, perhaps he should have been admitted to hospital rather than prison. Drinking more than a half litre of spirits is quite an accomplishment to say the least. In my glory days, I could manage 350ml at the most and usually spent the next day in bed.

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

In a respectable society the council would send a compliance letter to the householder, and if he does not maintain his property within a certain time-frame, council workmen come and do it for him, and the bill is ALWAYS higher than if the owner had met the demand.

That's exactly how it should work here.

To be fair, the problem in Poznań now is not with privately owned buildings, but rather city-owned ones. The city itself has made it clear that they would like to sell them, but no-one is going to buy a building filled with alcoholics that **** on the stairwells.

USA, Canada / For my dad... "free Steve Wlodarz" He is serving life without parole in a United States prison [32]

He was convicted of murder, attempted murder, two counts of assault and manufacturing some substance.

The story posted above isn't quite what happened - have a look here: tncourts.gov/sites/default/files/wlodarzstephenopncorr.pdf - it seems that he was clearly intent on killing a police officer. Given the story, although he appears to be innocent of actual murder, it's hard to sympathise with someone that clearly threatened to kill the police and then came out with every intention of doing so.
