News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

@
Avalon, that doesn't make you bi-, it makes you lesbian. At last check, women and girls are both proud members of the female species, yes?

Or were you being facetious? Guess its like the old joke: "My brother has a mixed marriage. He's Catholic and she's from Maine!" (groan, wheeze)

JohnnyReb(el), we're not doubting that Christians DON'T believe in immorality, the rest of us (fellow straight folks, I might add!!) simply wish to know why you think what "they're" doing, is necessarily immoral?? Because the Bible says so? Again, should the Bible be taken literally??!

Johnny babe,

As I tell those Creationist fellers down in Hoot 'n Hollerville, how the !#$% does anybody know how long a day was, huh, smart guy???!
What Jesus did or didn't say is irrelevant, since the Bible was written in a number of languages (none of the them English) which were interpreted aka MISSinterpreted by humans as fallible as you or me.

Go on, palsy! Spare us the bull.

Language / Devoicing of Polish consonants not always correct? [11]

At least when I typically devoice those consonants, I've never been correct by even an educated Polish native speaker! I figure therefore that my pronunciation of these combinations at least must be authentic. My grammar on the other hand??? That's another storyLOL

Language / Devoicing of Polish consonants not always correct? [11]

My teacher (originally from former Lwów) ALWAYS would devoice the final, even medial, consonants e.g. "także" (taGże),
"Bóg" (BóK) etc... Some Poles have said this is regional, others, that it's correct. I tend to err on the side of caution and to trust my first, and still best, teacher:-)

Language / Why Genitive instead of Accusative in Polish language? [8]

"Ona ma jednĄ zielonĄ ogórkĘ." but "Ona nie ma jednEJ zielonEJ ogórkI." "ogórka" - feminine noun, "-ego" - masc. virile animate/inanimate and/or neuter ending

"Ona ma jeden czerwony ołówek." but "Ona nie ma jedNEGO czerwonEGO ołówKU." "ołówek" - masculine (inanimate) noun

:-)

The same folks here in the States who scream about "equality" and such, are the same white European Christians who claim to feel "surrounded" by so-called minorities fast becoming the majority.

Recently met a middle-aged woman whose last name, Jensen, was noted by a passer-by as Danish, to which this woman replied, "Yes, that's right! We're a minority groups too."

The problem with people who claim to be homophILES under the guise of desiring "free expression", is that W.A.S.P. expression was always free....everybody else's wasn't:-)

Work / What are the job opportunities in Poland for a young Italian with a law degree? [72]

I'd set my sights on Warszawa and/or Kraków! In Gdańsk as well, I've heard from Polish friends that these cities offers competitive salaries in your area.

If all else fails though, don't abadon the US, the UK or (even!!) Germany:-) Do you speak any other languages besides Polish and English? German will be a tremendous asset.

Little tip: DON'T use English in Germany; it'll prove an expensive waste of timeLOL

What you still don't seem to grasp though, is that gay citizens were NEVER accorded the same equality, for instance that you or I were. For that reason, now they are exercising the opportunity they never had of expressing themselves with much the same freedom as we do. You appear to be complaining about perceived "reverse discrimination", "empowerment" or "entitlement", you seem to think you are being denied.

Is that right?

Let's give an analogous example. You're outraged that in a majority society, a minority group respectfully requests its right to flex its muscles and exercise equal rights heretofore denied them by the majority.

Same thing here. Straight folks never had to question or certainly defend their identity against a gay majority. Therefore, all gays are asking is equal time for equal pleasure.

I don't see anything wrong with that, do you? If you were a W.A.S.P American (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) and a Jewish, Buddhist or Hindu minority in your town asked for equal time to march in a parade of their own to assert THEIR heretofore marginalized identity, would you really deny them that privilege??

Know for a fact that the UK wouldn't likely turn down a Polish resume, considering it were only TOP NOTCH!
Apart from that, the US often will hire foreign counsel at major international firms, such as New York's Sherman & Sterling etc.

Used to be acquainted with a number of Polish attorneys who were former English students of mine and who did quite well with European degrees. Then again, in addition to a Polish university, guess it does help to have Oxford on the ol' cv too:-)

Language / Advanced Polish language learning - how? Looking for ideas. [6]

Try watching recent Polish movies with Polish, rather than native-language, subtitles! This will allow you to see what the speakers are saying, as well as listen to them while they're talking. Never underestimate the primacy of mimicking facial gesture when speaking.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

PISA is not always reliable, that's absolutely right! Sure, it's easy to single out Iceland or Finland as tops in world, at least European, literacy, math skills, history and all that. Those two countries are also about the most homogeneous populations in all of Europe, including the world. Not too difficult is it to educate systematically and thoroughly a people when they aren't beset constantly by any number of social problems as is the case in Germany, France, England, Poland along with a host of others! Iceland and Finland both have tiny populations compared with the former ones I just mentioned, making it much harder to streamline learning when a given grade school class is composed of foreign-born children, even immigrant children, who don't or rarely speak/hear the host language at home, then come to school ill prepared to learn.

Poles also belong to a historically black market economy!! Bribery is such a way of life throughout much of the former-Communist countries (not to mention to present-day "Old" Silk Road), most probably wouldn't know how to either hire or look for work without smoothing the way:-)

I'm not saying it's necessarily their fault; they merely don't know better!

I agree to a great extent. As to whether life is "really a lot of fun when you have enough money", I'd say that's more of an obvious statement than anything else. Certainly, cleverness has its own tangible rewards. The problem comes that many here in the US tend to penalize those in the medical, legal or other professions who desire to work honestly for their keep rather than simply pack it all in at thirty-five and spend the rest of their lives in a fool's paradise:-)

Polish salaries have definitely improved since the end of the '90s, beginning of the Millenium! In fact, cities like Krakow started to be called in Poland "Cud nad Wisłą" (Miracle on the Vistula). In Greepoint, Bklyn., younger Poles have been streaming back to Poland with the improvement of the economy there. It is true that nowadays, things have changed back a bit, and yet let's dispel the myth of present-day Poland being some Communist backwater, forever behind the plow (as well as the times).

Warszawa too has burgeoned into among other things an IT mega-center and many start ups in Poland have even reached the major exchanges.

On another note, it's unfair to compare Poland to Germany, the US or even Russia, if mostly by virtue of its size.
