Genealogy / My mothers family? Sobkevitz (?) Moved from Poland in the early 1900's [8]

moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/sutkiewicz.html

According to that site there are 61 people called Sutkiewicz in Poland. It's pretty rare but it exists.
As for its etymology, it may be derived from suty - abundant, lavish, generous, or Old Polish suć - create, build, embroid (?) or sutek - nipple

Travel / I'm Spanish, next week I'm going to be at Warsaw and Kielce, help! [21]

Don't feed the troll.
A poster, who claims to be both from Italy and Spain, says he got a girl pregnant on his last visit to Poland. But now he doesn't even know how to exchange money. And poor thing is afraid of Polish racists.

Luckily, there's this lovely guest poster who confirms his doubts. What a coincidence.
Pffff

News / "It's too late for Germany" (but not for Poland) [1798]

People don't realise such children are half Arab. Even full blood Turkish, Tunisian or Algerian people don't stand out in the crowd. Especially in winter.

A colleague of mine is half Morrocan. Once a newbie was talking about Arabs in Holland not realising X is half Arab. Lol.
As for people who are half Arab, google Artur Partyka. He's half Algerian. You may also google Polish Abelard Giza who often jokes about his Arabic looks. And he is Polish.

News / "It's too late for Germany" (but not for Poland) [1798]

I know several people of mixed Polish-Arab origin - the oldest is in his 40s, the youngest are about 10. They don't stand out. There have been such couples in Poland for decades.

Polish-African children are far less common but if it's NOT socially acceptable to bully them. I have met two such kids here. They get more stares but that's all. You need to be a real jerk to bull someone on the basis of their skin colour.

Classifieds / What are good local television brands [2]

There's a brand called manta but I don't know the quality of their tvs.
Check promocje in different shops.
800-1000 doesn't seem too much really. If you buy it at a regular shop you get two years guarantee.
You may buy a second hand tv if you want to save money but then you don't get a guarantee.

Food / How to cook Frozen pierogi? Boil or Fry? [90]

That's what I meant: boil first and then fry to reheat.
But I've done it with home made pierogi only.

*frozen ONES of course
Sometimes I read what I wrote ...

Law / Polish child maintenance, possible Irish father, Polish mother [21]

If you haven't paid anything for 10 years, it's hard to accuse her of being after your money. There must have been a reason why she decided to leave when she was pregnant. Why would anyone decide to be a single mother with no financial support from the child's father for ten years? I have some guesses having read your post but I don't know.

First of all, get sober and get a job regardless of the dna test results for the sake of yourself and your mother. If the child is yours, take the responsibility. Get to know him/her but keep in mind, the child won't be happy to see a tipsy foreigner who claims to be his/her daddy. It will take a lot of time to be accepted.

Law / Payment of ZUS/ Income Tax - 'sole trading' business in Poland [27]

Even if your accountant does the maths, you need to pay it and there are several requirements concerning being insured by in KRUS. Apparently, you are a farmer and since you don't pay into ZUS, you don't make much. And no, KRUS is not superior to ZUS ...

Law / Payment of ZUS/ Income Tax - 'sole trading' business in Poland [27]

I have tried to check it online and found no results.

edit: unless you're talking about renting a flat as a private person. (I guess you meant ryczałt)
That's not a registered business. If you register a business, you need to pay ZUS even if you don't use it afaik. That's why you got me curious.

Law / Payment of ZUS/ Income Tax - 'sole trading' business in Poland [27]

@O WELL
If someone makes money here and doesn't pay ZUS, that's a fraud. And cheating the system. They don't contribute to the budget and that's not patriotic . The tax money goes to the health system etc. If you avoid it to get more profit, you're a fraud and far from being patriotic.

Honestly, I don't understand why you seem to take pride in knowing such people. How is the situation in Poland going to be any better with such people around?

@Dirk diggler
So you're in KRUS?
I may have exaggerated saying Poles living abroad don't love their country. There are different reasons why they moved. But it's totally weird that someone who claims to love their country lists a number of excuses why they won't move. The percentage of Muslims and Jews you often criticise is much higher in the US. You say you're well of so you have enough money even if things don't go well. I'm not going to check your name online. I can't be 100% sure it's you ... also I think it's rather creepy to check a user's personal details. Not to mention calling them, if what Doug says is true.

Seriously, contribute here. Pay taxes.
And practice your Polish. Read in Polish. Talk to people in Polish. Right now it's clear your Polish requires a lot of practice both in terms of spelling and grammar. Perhaps, that's the reason you don't want to move.

These two little things will show your patriotism and love of Poland. They're not that little really.

History / Is there a Western/Eastern divide in Poland like the Northern/Southern divide in Italy? [38]

@Guestuser
Both Slezanie/Silesians and Kaszubi/Kashubians were in fact Slavic tribes.
Slavs are diverse, too. The most general division is East, West and South Slavs. Kashubians and Silesians were West Slavic tribes.
What exactly do you mean by Germanic characteristics?
BTW, in times of the partitions parts of Eastern Poland were under Austrian partition. So ... Are Austrians Germanic enough?
As for the infrastructure and industry, coal can be found in Western Poland. Where there was coal, there were railways and industry. And that influenced the development of the area, too.

In terms of their cultural heritage, I doubt they identify themselves as either Slavic or Germanic but rather Silesian and Kashubian respectively.
I don't know much about Kasubians, Silesians are often stereotyped as hard-working and religious. Both of these features connected with large numbers of Upper Silesians working in coal mining.

History / Is there a Western/Eastern divide in Poland like the Northern/Southern divide in Italy? [38]

About 1,5 million people were resettled from Eastern to Western Poland in the 40s. Thousands moved to other parts of the country voluntarily. They brought their traditions. So no, there are no major cultural differences between Eastern and Western Poland. Those who are interested in folk traditions cultivate them no matter where they live.

As for the infrastructure and economy, that's a different story.
As for Kashubians and Silesians being Germanic, I'd rather not repeat Nazi propaganda.
